3D 애니메이션 <토이 스토리 3>의 음악분석을 통한 영상과 음악의 상관관계 연구

Abstract

애니메이션 <토이 스토리(Toy Story, 1995)>는 컴퓨터 그래픽 기술의 발달로 만들어진 최초의 3D 장편 애니메이션으로 제작된 지 약 20년 이상이 되었다. <토이 스토리> 이후 최근까지 컴퓨터 그래픽의 발전으로 애니메이션에 대한 많은 연구가 행해졌지만, 이에 상응하는 3D 애니메이션 음악에 대한 연구는 거의 없었다. 본 논문은 3D 애니메이션 <토이 스토리 3(Toy Story 3, 2010)>을 음악의 연구 대상으로 선정하여, 음악분석을 통해 영상과 음악과의 상관관계 뿐 아니라 3D 애니메이션을 표현하는 음악의 입체적 접근을 연구하는 것이 이번 연구의 목적이다. <토이 스토리 3>은 시리즈 중 1, 2편의 요소들을 수렴한 작품이자, 세 편 중 유일하게 미국 아카데미 시상식에서 장편 애니메이션 작품상과 주제가상을 수상한 작품이기도 하다. 우선, 작품의 이론적 배경 확립을 위해 <토이 스토리> 시리즈를 탄생시킨 픽사 스튜디오가 설립 과정 속에서 추구했던 이념과 작품과의 연계성을 파악하고 애니메이션 영화사에서 해당 작품이 갖는 의의를 알아보고자 하였다. 감독의 연출 의도에 맞게 사용 된 음악을 파악하기 위해 음악의 인, 아웃 삽입부분에 대한 음악 큐시트를 작성하였으며, 스토리 구조와 음악적 흐름과의 관계를 연구하였다. 각 장면에 삽입된 음악의 쓰임을 분석함으로써 특히, 작품에서 3D 영상을 표현하는데 음악이 어떤 역할을 하는지를 분석하였다. 이러한 음악 분석을 바탕으로 작품에 사용된 음악적 요소와 각 부분의 음악적 기능이 무엇인지에 대해 연구하였다. 이와 같은 분석 결과 <토이 스토리 3>의 음악의 특징은 상영시간의 90.5%에 달하는 음악을 삽입하였는데, 이는 영상의 상황이나 스토리의 대부분을 음악으로 표현하고 있음을 보여주었다. 특히, 장난감들과 장난감들의 주인인 앤디 사이의 우정이나 추억 등을 떠올리는 이 애니메이션의 주제를 담고 있는 제목(“You've got a friend in me”)을 가진 노래 곡을 사용했고, 이 곡은 작품 전반에 걸쳐 모티브의 변주나 반복이 사용됨으로써 스토리의 주제를 전달하고 있다. 또한, 엔딩 크레딧 송으로 우정에 대한 가사를 담은 “We Belong Together”라는 곡이 사용되었는데, 이는 오직 엔딩 크레딧만을 위해 작곡된 곡으로 영화의 주제를 다시 한 번 상기시키는 역할을 하였다. 이는 다른 애니메이션과는 차별된 이 작품의 특징으로 볼 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 특수 주법과 하모니카, 플라멩코 기타와 같은 음악적 색깔이 있는 악기를 사용하여 작품의 배경이나 상황의 이미지를 효과적으로 묘사하는 한편, 캐릭터의 이미지에 맞는 1960~70년대에 시대상을 표현하기 위해 동시대의 음악을 차용해 작품의 시ㆍ공간적 배경을 뒷받침하기도 하였다. 기존의 뮤지컬 형식을 갖는 디즈니 애니메이션의 음악과는 다른 3D 애니메이션 음악에 대한 연구의 필요성을 인지하여, 이에 3D 애니메이션 <토이 스토리 3>를 선정해 연구하였다. 연구를 토대로 영상의 이미지를 좀 더 실감할 수 있도록 음악이 많은 부분에 삽입되어 재현된 점, 작품의 주제인 우정을 노래 곡으로 가사 뿐 아니라 모티브의 변주 또는 반복의 형태로 스토리 전반에 걸쳐 사용한 점, 마지막으로 엔딩 크레딧에 주제가를 설정하여 작품이 전달하고자 하는 메시지를 다시 한 번 상기시키는 점들을 3D 영상을 표현하는 음악의 시도로 보았다. 본 논문의 연구를 통해 3D 애니메이션 뿐 아니라, 다양한 영화와 음악의 관계를 보다 다각적으로 연구할 수 있는 계기를 마련하는 하나의 자료가 되길 바란다.;The animation <Toy Story, 1995>, which is more than 20 years old, is the first 3D animated film produced with the development in computer graphic technology. Many researches on animation have been made after <Toy Story> thanks to advanced graphics, but there has rarely been a study on the music of 3D animation. This thesis chooses 3D animation <Toy Story 3, 2010> for its musical research subject. The purpose of this study is to find out not only correlation between movie scene and music but also stereoscopic approach in music through musical analysis. <Toy Story 3> converges elements from previous series and is the only one out of three movies that won both Best Animated Film and Best Original Song awards from Academy Awards. Above all, the paper for theoretical background grasps the relationship between Pixar Studio’s, creator of <Toy Story> series, philosophy in its founding steps and animation. It further looks into the animation’s significance in film history. In order to understand director’s producing intentions in use of music, this thesis provides musical cue sheets on music inserted in and out. It also examines the relationship between structure of the story and the musical flow. Especially, by analyzing musical usages which are inserted in each scene, the paper understands the role of music in expressing 3D movie scene. On such basis, the study comprehends the elements used in the animation and the musical function of each parts. As the result, the musical feature of <Toy Story 3> lies in embedment of music in 90.5% of the movie’s running time, meaning the animation is representing most of movie scene’s situation and story through music. Particularly, the song “You’ve got a friend in me” represents the main theme of the animation which is the friendship and reminiscence of toys and their owner Andy. This song delivers the main theme through variations and repetitions in motif throughout the film. In addition, the song “We Belong Together” conveying lyric about friendship is employed for ending credit. This song was purposely composed just for ending credit to remind the movie’s main theme. Such feature differentiates the animation with others. Furthermore, contemporary music technique with use of instruments of musical colors like harmonica and flamingo guitars effectively illustrates the animation’s background or situational scene. They also by adopting music of the period that suits character’s image supports the background time and space of the 1960s-70s. Sensing the need for study on 3D animation music which is different from original musical format of Disney animation music, the thesis chose and studied <Toy Story 3>, 3D animation. According to the research, musical efforts in representing 3D movie scenes can be found in high rate of insertion of music to realize the video images, delivery of the animation’s main theme, friendship, throughout the story by songs’ lyrics and repetition or variation in motif, and placement of the main theme song in the ending credit to convey the animation’s message once again. This thesis hopes to serve not only for 3D animation but also for diverse movies as one of research materials to provide opportunities in further studying the relationship of movie and music in multilateral ways.
