Abstract
Adolescence is often called the stormy period and a period in which physically and psychologically various changes take place. This is a period in which people form the ego identity, so they react sensitively even to small factors and get stressed, and some come to have suicidal ideation as a means of evasion, impulsively, as they cannot find a positive solution to solve this. According to the “2014 Korea Welfare Panel Study: Descriptive Report,” it turned out that adolescence is the period in which most had suicidal ideation, and it was reported that, of the entire age groups, adolescents took up the highest percentage (51.49%). Since there are reports that suicidal ideation increases the risk of a suicidal attempt and many studies that suicidal ideation is a common pre-symptom of a suicidal attempt, it is necessary to analyze various factors, which are the causes of suicidal ideation. This study would investigate and reveal the causes of adolescents’ suicidal ideation according to individuals’ psychological and social factors, instead of a focus on pathology, in the intervention in preventing adolescent suicide. Many studies have been conducted in order to understand the diverse causes affecting adolescents’ suicidal ideation, which are divided broadly into risk factors, protective factors, and socio-demographic factors according to personal characteristics. Therefore, this study would analyze various factors that might affect adolescents’ suicidal ideation based on the preceding studies. In addition, in that this study attempts to analyze the impact of anxiety caused by a traumatic experience, which becomes an issue recently, though the existing domestic studies did not deal with it, and the impact of social problems on adolescents’ suicidal ideation, this study has a significance that it advanced a variety of factorial analysis of adolescents’ suicidal ideation to a step further. In addition, in that it is necessary to expand and discuss the factors to various dimensions in preventing adolescent suicide, this study has a significance. As for the analysis data of this study, this study conducted a survey with 4,998 adolescents of both sexes aged 14 to 18 living in 17 cities or provinces of South Korea using in the 2015 “Actual Condition Survey on the Social and Psychological Anxiety in Korean Society” conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. As for the method of analysis, using SPSS 22.0, a frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, chi-square test, independent sample t-test, and logistic regression were applied. The results of the study that have been drawn through the above method of analysis are as follows: It turned out that risk factors and protective factors had significant impacts on adolescents’ suicidal ideation, and as a result of an analysis, the suicidal ideation of the adolescents who experienced a trauma significantly increased in the factor of traumatic experience, which was differentiated from other studies, of the risk factors. In addition, it was noted that the self-esteem and social support had negative impacts on suicidal ideation and protected adolescents’ suicidal ideation and that other socio-demographic factors had partially significant impacts.
