수련과 같은 모네의 작품(poppies at Argenteuil, Ice Floes on Seine, The Ice Floes, Water lilies 1906, Water Lilis 1915)들에 나타난 이미지와 주조색을 바탕으로 추상적 디자인을 전개하여 펠트 스카프와 타피스트리를 제작하였다. Claude Monet dedicated his artist career to expressing the concept of “colored light”. He was aware that perceived color of objects in nature can vary with changes in the surrounding light. To express this concept, Monet used a wide spectrum of colors to depict nature. As such, the impressions of his nature paintings varies greatly as well: some of them seem soft and beautiful whereas others can seem crude and depressing. It seems that such range of diverse impressions mirror the qualities of mother nature herself. The author’s intention was to extract the “colors of nature” seen in Monet’s paintings and capture them through manual craft work. In doing so, the author materialized Monet’s colors which were considered to be abstract symbols. To express the wide spectrum of colors seen in Monet’s paintings, the author chose to use Nuno felt as the primary material for her craft. Felt is a natural fiber with a unique quality that it can be manufactured by bonding wool and cloth without weaving. During the dying process, wool naturally expresses a wide range of colors which makes it a suitable material to capture Monet’s colors. Furthermore, thickness and texture can be expressed as well during the felting process. In particular, Wool Painting technique in conjunction with Nuno Felting technique was used where smooth silk is combined with the felt to enhance the consistency and pliability of the final material. Using the resulting felt, the author chose to craft a scarf and a tapestry. The author’s scarf and tapestry are crafted using an abstract design inspired by the primary colors present in Monet’s signature paintings: Poppies at Argenteuil, Ice Floes on Seine, The Ice Floes, Water Lilies, Nymposeas, and Water Lilies 1906. Soap washing and press technique was employed during the felting process to craft the scarf. Needle press technique in addition to soap washing and press technique was used in parallel for the tapestry. The crafting process was quite time-consuming, but it served as a valuable opportunity to witness the progressive maturity of the material first-hand. In summation, the author extracted and materialized the abstract colors and textures seen in Monet's paintings into wool and silk. Furthermore, the author pioneered a unique facet of design by simplifying the forms of objects in lieu of Nuno Felting technique. It is the author’s opinion that such project serves to show the possibility of a fusion between the fields of expressive painting and textile art design.-
