Analysis of causal association between internet / smart-phone addiction and mental disorders of Korean adults using propensity score matching

Abstract

본 연구는 뇌과학원천기술개발사업의 일환으로 조사된 우리나라 성인군들의 자가진단 설문조사를 바탕으로 인터넷·스마트폰 중독 여부와 여러 정신건강척도(우울증, 불안) 간의 양방향성 인과관계를 추론함을 목적으로 한다. 특히 인터넷·스마트폰 중독 척도 기준으로 위험군에 영향을 미치는 여러 정신 건강 척도들의 패턴들을 해석하고, 해당 패턴별로 인터넷·스마트폰 중독 위험군들의 유형을 세분화해 본다. 또한, 단순한 상관성이 아닌 인과관계를 확인하기 위해 Propensity score matching 방법을 이용하여, 각 정신질환이 중독 여부에 원인이 될 수 있는지, 또한 중독이 각 정신질환에 미치는 영향이 있는지 확인해본다.;Randomized Control Trials (RCT) are considered as golden standard approach for estimating causal relationship of treatment intervention and exposure on outcomes. However in observational studies, it is hard to define causal relation because the assignment of treatments to subjects is generally not random. In order to estimate causal relationship in observational studies, we used Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method which attempts to reduce the bias by comparing covariates among treated and controled subject groups. In this research, we tried to find causal relationship between Internet and smartphone addiction and two mental disorders ― depression and anxiety ― using PSM with self-diagnosis survey data of 5,003 adults in South Korea.
