dc.description.abstract1. Introduction The purpose of this portfolio is to create a theme-based textbook for Korean high school students who are planning to become professional athletes in the future. In order to identify the students’ specific needs, a needs analysis was conducted. According to the results, the students want to improve their English proficiency. However, they were not interested in the topics in most of the textbooks used in their English language classes because the topics did not seem to be relevant to their field. Since the students are interested in topics related to sports, it is necessary to create a book with themes that are related to the topic of their interest. Therefore, a sports-based English language book will provide a positive opportunity for the students to learn English while at the same time gaining content knowledge and insights in a topic that they are highly motivated to learn more about. This textbook is designed for high school students (17-19 years old, mixed gender) whose proficiency level is intermediate-low to mid (ACTFL). The book covers ten different kinds of sports chosen by its popularity both in the world and in Korea: archery, basketball, cycling, football, golf, (artistic) gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Each chapter contains different subjects or topics based on the sport, so the learners can be exposed to various contents, activities, and language items. 2. Methodology The primary method adapted for this textbook is the theme-based approach; in addition, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) methods and task-based activities will be integrated into the activities which emphasize interaction and communication. These activities are used to help the students develop the four skills effectively. Each chapter is divided into six stages: getting ready, listening, speaking, language points, reading, and writing. Theme-based instruction is an approach to language teaching in which the whole course is structured around certain themes or topics (Brinton, 2001; Brinton, Snow, & Wesche, 2003; Yang, 2009). In this approach, the subject matter can be used as the content of language learning (Wesche & Skehan, 2002; Yang, 2009). According to Freeman and Freeman (2006) and Yang (2009), if the content of the lesson is relevant and interesting, students are more likely to try harder to understand and to stay focused. Brinton, Snow and Wesche (2003) and Yang (2009) also believe that if the lesson content is perceived to be relevant by the learners, their motivation is more likely to increase and as a result, effective learning can be promoted. However, in Korean EFL contexts, students who pursue a specific field such as art or physical education have few opportunities to learn English related to their interests due to a lack of class time and teaching resources. Hence, this textbook is designed around the learners’ interests; as a result, their life experiences, attitudes, skills and knowledge will contribute toward improving their English language skills in meaningful ways.(Mumford, 2000). At the beginning of each chapter, pictures and questions will be provided to activate the students’ schemata as well as to increase their interests in the topics. In the listening stage, authentic audios or video clips will be given, which can expose the students to real-language use and improve listening-comprehension skills (Thanajaro, 2000). In the while listening stage, students will be exposed to the target language as they use their listening strategies such as skimming or scanning in order to complete the given task. In the speaking stage, students will engage in communicative activities with their classmates. Therefore, they will have an opportunity to recycle and use the target language presented in the previous stage. In the 'language points' stage, the explanation and the task can help students to learn the target vocabulary and grammar structures and prepare them for following activities. The target words and grammar are chosen by its importance and frequency in relation to the content and the text. In the reading stage, the text is related to the previous activities which will prepare the students to read the main text. During the while-reading stage, students have opportunities to use a variety of reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, sequencing, and visualizing in order to develop their reading skills. In the writing stage, students will complete writing activities by using the content and linguistic knowledge that they have learned in the previous stages. Throughout the writing activity, learners receive an opportunity to personalize and reinforce what they have learned while at the same time practicing their productive skills. 3. Expected outcomes This textbook has four main goals: firstly, students will be able to increase their motivation towards learning English through topics that are relevant to their future career prospects; secondly, students will be able to develop both receptive and productive skills by completing task-based activities; thirdly, students will be able to improve accuracy by learning structures and words through both inductive and deductive learning methods; and lastly, students will be able to improve their fluency through task-based activities and interaction with their peers. 4. Conclusion Overall, the textbook is appropriate for high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in professional sports; furthermore, this book is designed to help the learners develop their English language skills through meaningful activities. The textbook will help the students to increase their motivation and improve their language skills by providing relevant topics and activities based on their interests, experiences, attitudes, skills and knowledge. Each chapter contains task-based, communicative activities designed to improve the students’ accuracy as well as fluency. Therefore, the book will help learners to develop their language proficiency as well as increase their confidence and motivation toward learning English.-
