Women's Political Participation for Economic Growth

Abstract

Economic growth is one of the solutions to reduce poverty. Recent few decades, the world economy is growing fast. At the same time, each country, including developed and developing, has been fighting against poverty for long periods. But why is it still there especially among women and girls? Is it related with higher gender inequality in politics? This research empirically investigates the relationship between women’s political representation and economic development for 182 countries, with data covering eighteen years from 1996 to 2013. The results suggest that a higher representation of women in the national legislature leads to lower poverty and higher economic growth. Both developing countries and developed countries have positive significant effects. In addition, the study shows that regions which have had more women’s representation in the parliament have had an especially accelerated economic growth for two regions: Eastern Europe and Central Asia, as well as Latin America and the Caribbean regions. Key words: Gender equality, women legislators, economic growth;경제 성장은 가난을 감소하기 위한 해결책 중 하나이다. 최근 몇 십 년 간 세계 경제는 급속도로 성장해왔으며 이와 동시에 선진국과 개발도상국을 포함한 각 국가가 모두 가난을 해소하기 위해 싸워왔다. 그러나 이 논문에서는 특히 왜 여성들에게 가난이더 부담이 되어 왔으며 성차별적 정책들이 여성들의 가난과 어떤 관계가 있는지 연구하고자 한다. 본 연구는 1996년부터 2013년까지 약 18년 동안 182개국을 대상으로 여성의 정치참여와 경제 성장의 관계를 실증적으로 조사하였다. 결론적으로 여성의 높은 입법참여가 가난을 완화시키고 높은 경제 성장을 이끌었으며 이는 선진국과 개발도상국 모두에 긍정적인 중대한 영향을 주었다. 추가적으로 본 연구에서는 여성의 높은 입법참여율이 동부 유럽과 중앙아시아를 비롯하여 라틴아메리카, 카리브해 연안 지역의 경제 성장을 가속화했다는 것을 보여준다. 키워드 : 성평등, 여성 정치가, 경제성장
