Abstract
The study aimed at examining the effects of post-reading graphic organizer activity and cooperative learning on Korean EFL primary students’ reading comprehension abilities and attitudes toward reading. The study was conducted in regular English class for 10 weeks with 99 elementary school 5th graders in Seoul, Korea. There were four participating groups, two experimental groups were supposed to use graphic organizer and control groups were supposed to solve reading comprehension questions for their post-reading activity. One of the experimental group and the control group worked on each graphic organizer by cooperating and the other group worked individually. After performing post-reading activities, both groups were asked to take a recall test to measure how much information they understood and were able to write according to the types of post-reading activities and English proficiency level. In order to investigate the effects of the students’ English proficiency level, they students were divided into two proficiency groups based on their pre-test score. Prior to the experiment, all of the student took a pre-reading test and pre-survey about the attitude toward reading learning. Right after the experiment, post-test was carried out to compare how their reading comprehension ability got improved and post-survey and students’ interview were conducted to investigate and see the progress of students attitude toward reading. The results were analyzed through t-test and three way ANOVA. The results of the study are as follows. First, regardless of the groups, all of the low English proficiency group made more significant gains on post-reading test which means their reading ability has proved and statistically the score is meaningful. Therefore there were no differences for the students’ reading ability between post-reading graphic organizer activity and answering the questions activity for the low-level students to improve their English proficiency. Second, post-reading graphic organizer activity with individual work group showed higher improvement in attitudes toward reading English book and the improvement was statistically meaningful. However, attitudes toward studying English, effects of graphic organizer activity and cooperative learning showed no differences between pre-survey and post-survey. It was found that the graphic organizer-individual group was able to complete their graphic organizer worksheet with higher interest and motivated them to read books in the class which helped them to be improved more and more. On the other hand, since the graphic organizer-cooperative learning group needed to converse with their teammates consistently and efficiently to conduct the activity, they were exposed to the other things more easily which discourage them to concentrate on the work such as teammates’ chatting, fighting, different ideas, and lack of communication skill. These elements made them unmotivated and less interested in reading a story. Moreover, for students it was hard to see their improvement according to their efforts. The questionnaire about graphic organizer showed that most of students were satisfied using the graphic organizer as a post-reading activity. The reason is this activity helped to understand the story and structure better and clearer. However, it was unmotivated when they did the graphic organizer in every story time and both the high English proficiency group and the low proficiency group shared using graphic organizer can be useful depends on their English level. Lastly, in the result of analyzing students recall test, the graphic organizer-individual group’s score was consistently decreased. Both control groups’ recall test score was increased until the 5th lesson, but their 8th lesson recall test score was lower than the 1st recall test result. However, the graphic organizer-cooperative learning group’s recall test score was continuously getting higher. Especially, the low English proficiency group made significant improvement than the high English proficiency group. This shows that using graphic organizer with cooperative learning was effective for the low English level students to understand stories and complete the task. This result is as same as the result of the post-reading test which showed that the low English proficiency group made hight improvement compare to the high English proficiency group. In summary, the result of this study indicated positive effects of a reading program using a story book on Korean EFL primary low English proficiency group. Regardless of using the graphic organizer and cooperative learning, the low English level students reading comprehension ability showed improvement. Based on the founding, it is concluded that a reading program would be effective for young EFL learners in input poor EFL condition to enhance reading comprehension capacity and foster positive attitudes toward reading in English. It is, therefore, recommended that a reading class using a story book should be widely implemented in Korean primary school classrooms which provides various and abundant context and background knowledge to communicate with others.
