Combating Violence against Women in Egypt

Abstract

The research looks into the governmental efforts, activities, policies, laws, and strategies regarding combating violence against women (VAW) in Egypt, because despite their existence, VAW still is a serious problem in the Egyptian society. This research will examine four main forms of violence against women that the government concentrated in combating in Egypt: domestic violence, sexual harassment, early marriage, and female genital mutilation (FGM). Issues and cases of these forms are investigated, along with the laws, policies, and strategies that different governments have implemented to successfully combat VAW issues. Furthermore, the status of Egyptian women and government efforts to combat VAW in Egypt are examined, in order to further investigate why VAW is an ongoing issue in Egypt.;이집트에서 여성폭력에 관한 정책, 법률과 전략이 있음에도 불구하고 여성폭력 사례들이 지속적으로 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 본 연구는 여성폭력에 관한 정책, 법률과 전략에 대해 논의한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 여성폭력을 네 가지 측면 즉 가정폭력, 공공영역에서의 성희롱, 초기 결혼과 여성 성기 절단에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 또한, 다른 정부가 여성폭력의 문제에 대처했던 성공적인 법률, 정책과 전략, 문제점과 사례들을 조사함으로써 이 네 가지 문제에 대해 논의하려고 한다. 더 나아가 이집트 정부에서 여성폭력의 문제를 해결하도록 노력하고 있음에도 불구하고 이집트에서 여성폭력이 지속적인 문제가 되는 원인을 검토하기 위해 이집트에서의 여성의 지위에 대해 살펴보았다.
