Abstract
The thesis focuses on the motet 「Fürchte dich nicht, BWV 228」 by Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the representative Baroque composers, studying the relationship between the musical ideas of the time and the music as well as the technique reflecting the era. The motet consists of 7 songs (BWV 118, BWV 225-230). The pieces are known to be performed for special ceremonies, such as funerals and birthdays, or used for practice. All 7 pieces cannot be analyzed in one category, for which they are in different kinds of forms, performance types, use of instruments, as well as lyrics. This is because Bach made the most of his composition to include the musical ideas of the time along with his own style of compositional techniques. During this period, expressing emotions were emphasized and Greek rhetoric was reinvented. This rhetoric greatly influenced the general society and the art. Accordingly, this movement also affected the music society, applying to the composition and performance. Music rhetoric is an efficient method to express the composer’s emotions and thoughts. This helped standardize the tonality, rhythm, harmony, beat, tempo, pitch, note figure in order to express symbolically. Bach also reflects such music features in his works. 「Fürchte dich nicht, BWV 228」 can be analyzed into two forms, double choir of antiphonal form and 4 part harmony of fugue. Especially in the 4 part harmony section, the soprano sings the choral melody, while the other three parts are in a fugue form, such as subject, answer, and counter subject, which suggests Bach’s originality. This piece, which was known to be used in funerals, adopts the word from Isaiah showing the perspective of Bach towards death. Considering the great influence given at the time such as theory of emotion, musical rhetoric, and theory of figure, it was clear to see why Bach chose the A Major, melody line after a half-beat, certain rhythm and figure to convey lyrics efficiently. Based on the analysis, the conductor should set the concept of the feature of double choir, efficient expression of the lyrics, use of figure and tempo, which requires a sophisticated expression in order to convey through the performance. Therefore, to thoroughly understand the works during Baroque period, external components related to the musical ideas as well as musical factors that went through emotional rhetoric devices should be examined beforehand. This goes the same to the work by Bach, for it is necessary to find, perform, and appreciate the aesthetic pleasure of musical ideas.
