Francis Poulenc의 연가곡 『작은 밀짚』(La courte paille, 1960) 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서 다루게 될 연가곡집『작은 밀짚』(La courte paille, 1960)은 프랑스 파리 출신의 피아니스트 겸 작곡가인 프랑시스 풀랑(Francis Poulenc, 1899~1963)이 모리스 카렘(Maurice Carême, 1899~1978)의 시에 곡을 붙인 7개의 가곡모음집이다. 풀랑이 활동하던 당시 과거 서양음악의 화성적인 조성체계가 무너지고 전통적인 미학적 개념들이 새롭게 변화되고 있었다. 시대적 통일성이 없이 인상주의 음악, 민족주의 음악, 무조 음악, 12음 음악, 신고전주의 음악, 재즈 등의 다양한 음악양식이 공존하였다. 1차 세계대전이 끝날 무렵인 1920년경에 프랑스에서는 신고전주의 운동이 프랑스 6인조(Les Six)를 중심으로 독일 낭만주의, 러시아 민족주의, 표현주의, 자국의 인상주의를 거부하며 일어났다. 풀랑은 그 일원으로서 형식과 선율의 명확성과 단순함, 대위법을 지향하는 신고전적인 스타일을 취하였다. 특히 그는 150여곡의 예술가곡(Mélodie)을 작곡하였는데 다양하면서도 아름다운 선율과 뛰어난 시 해석, 가사와 선율과 대등한 역할을 하는 피아노 반주부 등이 잘 표현되어있다. 『La courte paille』는 1960년에 작곡된 풀랑의 마지막 가곡이다. 그의 친한 친구이자 동료였던 소프라노 드니스 뒤발(Denise Duval, 1921~2016)의 어린 아들을 위해 쓴 곡으로 제 1곡「잠 Le sommeil」, 제 2곡「어떤 모험! Quelle aventure!」, 제 3곡「마음의 여왕 La reine de coeur」, 제 4곡「바, 베, 비, 보, 부 Ba, Be, Bi, Bo, Bu」, 제 5곡「음악의 천사들 Les anges musiciens」, 제 6곡「유리병 Le carafon」, 제 7곡「4월의 달 Lune d’Avril」으로 구성되어있다. 반복적이면서 서정적인 선율과 명확하고 단순한 리듬, 노래간의 대비되는 박자와 분위기 등이 돋보인다. 본 논문에서는 풀랑이 활동했던 20세기 초반 프랑스 예술가곡의 시대적 배경과 그의 생애, 가곡들의 전반적인 특징과 함께『La courte paille』를 연구하고자 한다. 더불어 분석을 통하여 풀랑의 세심한 시 선택, 성악선율과 피아노 반주부의 밀접한 관계를 이해하고 올바른 해석을 얻으며, 더욱 정확하고 효과적인 연주를 하는 것에 도움이 되고자 한다. ;The thesis focuses on the collection of songs 『La courte paille』 by Francis Poulenc(1899-1963), a French pianist and composer, which the lyrics adopts 7 poems by Maurice Carême(1899-1978). The time when Poulenc composed actively, the tonal structure of Western music fell apart while the traditional aesthetic concepts began to change. In this period, stylistic unity, various musical styles were existed including Impressionism, Nationalism, Atonality, Twelve-tone music, Neo-Classicism, and jazz. Around 1920, when WW.Ⅰ was ended, Les Six movement arose in France, rejecting the Romanticism and Expressionism of Germany, Nationalism of Russia, and Impressionism of France. As a member of Les Six, Poulenc chose to go for the Neo-Classical style, such as clarity and simplicity in musical structure, and use of counterpoint. He composed about 150 mélodies, which contains various and beautiful melodic lines, outstanding interpretation of poems, and equally important accompaniment part as the lyrics and the melody. 『La courte paille』was Poulenc’s final mélodie composed in 1960. The collection was made for the child of his best friend and colleague, soprano Denise Duval(1921-2016). The collection is made of 7 songs; 「Le sommeil」, 「Quelle aventure!」, 「La reine de coeur」, 「Ba, be, bi, bo, bu」, 「Les anges musiciens」, 「Le carafon」, 「Lune d’Avril」. Repetitive melodies, clarity in rhythms, contrasting moods and tempi among pieces stand out. The thesis will look into the historic background of the French mélodie in the early 20th century, the life of Poulenc, and the general features of French mélodie. Furthermore, through the analysis of『La courte paille』, the study will be carried out to know how Poulenc utilized the meticulously selected poem by himself. In addition, a connection between the vocal and the accompaniment will be examined to help make a proper interpretation.
