낯익은 공간에 내재된 낯섦

Abstract

공간은 우리의 삶에서 인간의 경험을 통해 일상을 풍부하게 만드는 역할을 한다. 본 논문은 일상의 일부라 할 수 있는 공간 속에서 일어나는 변화에 주목하며 일상의 공간을 빛과 시간 그리고 심리적 변화를 토대로 분석한다. 본인은 이를 예술이라는 표현 방식을 통해 탐구하고자 한다. 인간은 공간 속에서 삶을 영위하며 공간 속에서 탄생과 죽음을 경험한다. 이와 같은 흐름은 누구에게나 해당하는 인생의 단면이며 빠르게 변화하는 현대사회에서도 마찬가지이다. 그러한 현상 속에서 공간의 의미는 시대에 따라 변하기도 한다. 또한, 공간은 의미뿐만 아니라 여러 가지 조건에 의해 변화하는 성질을 지닌다. 물리적 공간은 변하지 않지만, 그 안에서 일어나는 다양한 현상들로 인해 심리적 공간으로 변모하기도 한다. 실증주의 지리학의 대안으로 인간주의 지리학의 필요성과 중요성을 주장한 이-푸투안(Yi-Fu Tuan)은 지표상의 자연환경과 인문환경의 영향에 대한 인간의 적응, 그리고 이 과정에서의 다양한 지리적 변화의 패턴과 과정을 연구하고 있다. 이-푸투안은 공간은 움직이고 개방적이며 자유이자 위협이고 이에 비해 장소는 정지이며 개인들이 부여하는 가치의 안식처라 주장한다. 공간은 인간의 직·간접적인 경험에 의해 친밀한 장소로 변환된다. 우리는 그 장소에서 안식과 애정을 느낀다. 또한, 가스통 바슐라르(Gaston Bachelard)는 우리와 가장 친밀한 장소인 집을 상상력의 시작이 될 수 있음을 시사한다. 일상의 공간은 경험하는 순간의 상황 혹은 감정 등에 따라 같은 공간이라 하더라도 다르게 느껴지기 마련이다. 또한, 어둠이 드리워진 공간은 때때로 익숙한 공간이라도 전혀 다른 공간으로 인식되기도 한다. 이처럼 우리는 상상력을 발휘하지 않아도 빛 혹은 어둠에 의해 상상력의 세계에 도달하기도 하고 경험에서 우러나오는 기억으로 인해 보통의 공간이 특별한 추억의 장소로 탈바꿈하는 것을 겪는다. 이러한 사유의 흔적은 예술작품을 통해 현실에서 벗어난 또 다른 세계의 발현으로 나타나기도 하며 그 지점은 본인의 작업과 연관성을 갖는다. 현대의 일상적 공간은 친숙하기보다는 늘 적응해야 하는 공간에 가까워졌다. 그러한 현상은 현대를 살아가는 우리의 현재와도 관련성을 띄게 되며, 안식과 안정의 대명사인 ‘집’의 의미를 변화시키는 데 일조했다. 집은 현재에도 과거 속 집의 역할인 주거의 용도를 수행하지만 나아가 심리적으로 안정을 찾는 공간이며 생활하는 공간 중 가장 변하지 않는 곳이라 할 수 있다. 본인은 집, 나아가 일상의 공간이 멈춰있는 듯 보이지만 늘 새로움을 내재한 변화의 특성을 가진 존재라는 것을 상기시키고자 한다. 본인의 일련의 작업은 집을 비롯해 익숙함으로 무장한 일상이 새롭게 보일 수 있다는 잠재적 가능성에 초점을 맞추었다. 또한, 일상의 공간에서 마주하는 환영적 공간에 대해 사유하고자 시도한다. 본인은 현실에서 개인에게 아주 익숙한 공간으로써 존재하지만 낯선 느낌으로 다가오는 순간을 주어진 시간과 신체의 움직임에 의해 변형된 모습을 형상화하고 이를 다양한 매체를 통해 표현함으로써 공간에서 느껴지는 또 다른 세계를 시각화한다. 이러한 행위를 통해 본인은 우리와 밀접한 관계를 유지하고 있는 일상의 공간이 일탈을 맛보는 통로로 작용할 가능성을 제기한다.;Space plays a role in making everyday life plentiful in our life through human experience. This paper is to analyze everyday space on the basis of light, time and psychological change while keeping an eye on changes occurring in space, i.e. a part of daily living. This study is intending to inquire into daily space through the expression style of art. A human experiences birth and death in space while leading a life in space. Such a flow is a phase of life applicable to anyone, and the same is true of the rapidly changing modern society. In such a phenomenon, the meaning of space sometimes changes according to the times. Also, space has a property of being changed by several conditions, not to mention its meaning. Sometimes, space transforms into psychological space due to various phenomena occurring inside the space although its physical space doesn’t change. Yi-Fu Tuan, who claimed the necessity and important of humanistic geography as an alternative to positivistic geography, is doing research on a human’s adaptation to the influence of natural environment of the surface of the earth, and humanistic environment, and the pattern and process of various geographical changes in this process. Yi-Fu Tuan argues that space is moving, open, free also threatening, and in contrast, a place is a standstill, and a haven of peace of value invested by an individual. Space is converted to an intimate place by a human’s direct, indirect experience. We find repose, and feel affection in that place. In addition, Gaston Bachelard suggests that a house, which is the most intimate place with us, could be the beginning of imagination. Daily space is certain to be felt differently according to an experiencing moment of situation, or feelings, etc. even in case of the same space. Also, a space blanketed by darkness is often perceived as a totally different space even if it is a familiar space sometimes. Like this, we get to the world of imagination by light, or darkness even without a display of imagination, and a common space is transformed into a place of special memories by memories coming from our experiences. Such vestiges of thinking sometimes turn up as a manifestation of another world digressing from reality through works of art, and the place has an association with this person’s work. Daily space in modern times comes close to the space, to which we have to always adapt ourselves rather than a familiar space. Such a phenomenon assumes a relationship even with the present of the humans who are living in modern times, playing a part in changing the meaning of‘house’, which is a byword for rest and stability. Even at present, a house carries out a residential purpose in the past; further, it can be safely said that a house is the space for pursuing psychological stability, and the most changeless place among the living space. Further, this study is intending to recall the fact that a house is an existence having a change property always embedded with newness although daily space seems to be at a standstill. The series of work conducted by this study put its focus on the potential possibility that daily life armed with familiarity including a house could be seen refreshingly. Also, this study is attempting at thinking about the illusory space faced in daily space. This study is intending to visualize the moment when something comes closer in an unfamiliar feeling although the something exists as a very familiar space to an individual in reality, into another different world, which is felt in space, by embodying a transformed appearance by the given time and physical movement, and expressing the transformed appearance through diverse media. Through such a behavior, this study is to raise the possibility that daily space, which maintains a close relationship with us, might work as a passage to relish a deviation.
