Abstract

Coming into the 2000’s, Korean dramas have begun to intertwine imaginative elements into storylines which are based on historical facts. In writing, this genre is called faction, a fused word combining fact and fiction. An ongoing debate related to this trend revolves around the dramatization of history in Korean television and its impact on viewers. Some worry that such fictional depictions of history will influence the viewers’ historical consciousness and memory. In this paper, I argue that history itself has similar issues on the scene-by-scene details. Sometimes, records of major historical events are not enough for a lively depiction of the past. Thus, in its depiction of history, historical television dramas recreate minor facts about the past, but we can still recognize the major branches of history-thus, substantiating historical continuity. While memories perpetuate and become institutionalized history, new memories arise and form new collective memories. The Korean viewer group also form new memories of historical events and figures through historical dramas. Drawing from these collective memories of viewers, I produced an E-book centering on the memorable scenes of six Korean historical drama productions with the accessible format of interactive PDF. This printed version of the interactive E-book, K-Drama & History, serves as a suggestion for E-book content and design that may intrigue foreign readers to learn about key events in Korean history through the collective memory of Korean viewers.;본 논문의 목적은, 한국 역사에 친숙하지 않는 외국인들에게 한국 사극드라마의 내용을 통해 한국의 고대역사를 흥미롭게 소개하는 데 있다. 2000년대 이후에 생겨난 “팩션(faction)” 장르, 즉, “팩트(fact)”와 “픽션(fiction)”으로 재구성한 장르가 제작되면서, 사극드라마의 역사성과 허구성에 대한 논쟁이 끊이지 않고 있다. 이런 논쟁을 집단기억이론이라는 새로운 시선으로 보아, 기록된 역사를 텔레비전 드라마라는 매체를 통해, 한국 시청자들의 집단기억을 보고자 한다. 집단기억이론에서는, 사람들의 집단기억이 기록된 역사로 이어지며, 이 과정 또한 되풀이된다고 한다. 텔레비전 드라마의 경우, 기록된 역사를 재구성한 사극드라마도 시청자들의 기억을 통해 새로운 역사를 만들어간다. 이 집단기억 이론을 통해, 한국의 고대 역사에 큰 획을 그은 역사적 사건들과 인물들을 외국인들에게 흥미롭게 소개하고자 한다. 특히, 집단기억을 나타내는 사극드라마의 명장면을 활용하여, 영상과 사진 등의 멀티미디어를 포함하는 인터렉티브 전자책을 제작하였다. 아쉬운 것은, 인쇄매체의 태생적 한계성 때문에, 드라마 동영상의 생생한 감동과 역동성을 지면에 담을 수 없다는 것이었다, 본 논문을 통해, 한국에 대해 잘 알지 못하는 외국인 독자들이, 접근성 좋은 인터렉티브 PDF 포맷으로, 한국 사극드라마를 통해 한국의 고대역사를 배움으로, 한류의 정의가 팝 컬쳐만이 아닌 한국의 전통과 역사에 까지 이르는 데 목적을 둔다.
