Abstract
Gender is known to have influence on various phonetic features such as fundamental frequency, vowel space, or speech rate. Many studies have reported that gender has effect also on voice onset time (VOT). While a number of studies assumed the primary contributing factor to be physiological, some other studies suggest that sociophonetic factors are the primary factors that cause gender effect on VOT. To determine more clearly which of the two factors more greatly contribute to the gender effect on VOT, this cross-linguistic study on L2 learners focused on examining the gender effect on VOTs of Korean and English stops produced by Korean learners of English. Based on the VOT baseline data of the native English speakers, gender effects were compared between the two groups of different level of English proficiency. In the production experiment, 20 native English speakers and 40 Korean learners of English were included. Korean participants were divided into two groups (consisting of 20 participants each) according to their English proficiency. The participants in the advanced learner group had resided in the United States for more than 5 years, and the intermediate learners were recruited with people who had resided in an English speaking country no more than 6 months. The three groups consisted of 10 males and 10 females each. Eight English stimuli and 12 Korean stimuli were used as speech materials. VOTs of English stimuli were measured for the native English speakers, and VOTs of both Korean and English stimuli were measured for Korean participants. The stimuli were produced isolated and in the sentence, and they were each repeated for three times. The results revealed different gender effect patterns between the three groups. While female native English speakers displayed longer VOTs for long-lag stops, males of Korean intermediate learners produced longer VOTs for long-lag stops of both Korean and English. In addition, females in this group displayed longer VOTs for lenis stops. This shows that gender effect appears differently depending on the language and that L1 knowledge was transferred to L2 in case of the intermediate learners. In case of the advanced learners, the patterns were similar to that of the intermediate learners for Korean and to native English speakers for English. This revealed that gender effect pattern can be different even within the same participant group according to the language. From the results, this study implies that sociophonetic factors are also impactful factors that contribute to gender effect on VOT as well as physiological factors.;음성학 연구에 있어서 음성 언어 변이에 영향을 주는 것들로는 나이, 인종, 성별, 발화속도 등 여러 가지 요인들이 있다.
