뮤지컬 <모차르트> 분석을 통한 실베스터 르베이의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

고전주의 작곡가 볼프강 아마데우스 모차르트(Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, 1756~1791)는 600여 작품을 통하여 음악의 천재로 알려졌으며 모차르트의 생애를 조망하는 뮤지컬 <모차르트(Mozart, 1999)>는 작곡가 실베스터 르베이에 의해서 작품화 되었다. 본 연구자는 1700년 대에 살았던 음악가의 생애를 뮤지컬화하기 위해 음악의 역할이 중요하다고 생각하였으며 그래미상을 수상하고 100 여 편이 넘는 영화 음악을 작곡하였으며 현재 뮤지컬 분야에서 활발한 활동을 보여주고 있는 르베이의 음악적 연구가 부족하다고 판단하여 뮤지컬 <모차르트>를 통한 실베스터 르베이의 음악적 특징을 연구 하였다. 본 연구는 뮤지컬 <모차르트>의 내용을 이해하여 작가 미하엘 쿤체의 의도를 파악하고 오스트리아 뮤지컬의 약사와 특징을 알아 본 후 실베스터 르베이가 활동했던 나라를 중심으로 음악적 스타일을 연구하며 작품 세계를 알아보았다. 음악 분석을 통하여 등장인물의 상황과 심리를 나타낸 음악적 표현을 알아보고 자유를 추구하는 모차르트의 이면적인 모습과 모차르트와 주변 인물과의 관계를 어떠한 음악적 요소로 나타내었는지 분석하였다. 르베이는 모차르트의 천재성을 표현하기 위해 모차르트의 곡을 삽입하고 자유를 추구하는 모차르트의 이면적인 모습을 모차르트의 음악적 특징인 알베르티 베이스 주법과 유사한 분산화음의 반주 형태에 수평적인 선율로 표현하였다. 2관 편성의 오케스트라로 극전체의 통일성을 주며 모차르트와 주변인물의 갈등 관계를 락 장르의 결합으로 나타낸다. 다수의 인물이 등장하는 복잡한 장면의 내용을 대위법과 동형진행으로 함축하였으며 각각의 다른 상황에 동일한 모티브를 사용하여 작품의 통일성을 주고 등장 인물의 미래를 암시하는 음악적인 장치로 사용하였다. 뮤지컬 <모차르트>는 오스트리아에서 공연을 시작으로 2010년 국내에서 공연되었으며 2014년 전체적인 수정 후 완성도 있는 작품으로 탈바꿈한 긍정적인 사례를 보여주고 있다.;Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was a prolific and influential classical composer whose works number more than 600. Recently, Sylvester Levay composed the music for and produced the musical Mozart! (1999) based on the Mozart’s life. The study posits that Levay’s music plays a dominant role in Mozart! when the musical illustrates the inner conflicts of the historical artist. Relatively few studies have been devoted to an analytic, detailed examination of Levay’s works. Therefore, following the scholars reviewed above, the paper builds on the analysis of elements in Levay’s musical Mozart! by attempting to determine the overall characteristics of Levay’s own compositions. The study’s first step in clarifying some of the musical characteristics that define Mozart! was to examine the background of Levey and provide a synopsis of his life while evaluating the world of his art. Musical analysis of Levey reveals musical conceits that express the inner complications of Mozart in the modern show. Additionally, the use of musical elements is examined to express the confrontation and conflict that surrounded the ‘Amade’. In Mozart!, Levay takes advantage of Mozart’s original music to advertise Mozart’s uniqueness. Furthermore, Levay articulates the inner appearance of Mozart’s pursuit of freedom by utilizing horizontal melody, which is similar to the Alberti bass playing style, and broken chords for accompaniments. Levay’s musical also directly transmits to the audience the inner conflict between ‘Mozart’ and ‘Amade’ through the altered rhythm and mixed chorus. A conflicted relationship around Mozart has been shown by combining the Organization of theater Orchestra 2 and Rock. Levay also connoted complicated scenes and phrasing by using counterpoint and sequential methods. Interestingly, the timbre of the instruments used and playing styles embody the images of the characters and create a distinct atmosphere. Last but not least, in Mozart! Levay also uses identical motifs as musical devices that recur at different parts of the show to create a certain degree of uniformity.
