현실에서 꿈꾸는 낙원의 형상

Abstract

사람들은 현실을 살아가면서 다양한 욕구와 소망을 갖고 자신만의 풍요롭고 이상적인 삶을 꿈꾼다. 현대 사회에서는 특히 돈과 같은 물질적 부유함이 이상적인 삶을 만들어주는 필수적인 요소로 꼽히며, 이를 이루기 위해서 끊임없이 경쟁을 해야 하는 힘겨운 시간을 보내야 한다. 현대 사회의 경쟁적인 상황은 사람들에게 고달픔과 무력함을 느끼게 한다. 이러한 상황 속에서 많은 사람들은 현실과는 다른 세상을 꿈꾸며 현실에서 벗어나려는 욕구를 느끼게 된다. 그래서 자신이 생각하는 이상적인 대상이나 세계를 찾아서 현실을 도피하려 한다. 도피처는 사람들의 심신을 치유해주고 휴식을 줌으로써 일상생활로 다시 복귀할 수 있게 도와준다. 본 연구자도 현실에서 힘든 일들을 겪으면서 휴식과 안정을 제공해줄 수 있는 이상적인 세상을 찾으려 하였다. 그리고 어느 날 꿈속에서 환상적인 자연 풍경을 보았고, 그곳에서 현실을 잊고 자연의 아름다운 모습을 만끽할 수 있었다. 꿈속에서 상상으로 이루어진 자연 풍경에서 낙원을 보았고, 그것을 그림으로 표현하고자 했다. ‘낙원’이란 장소는 보통 유토피아·파라다이스·무릉도원 등과 같이 상상에 존재하는 장소를 연상시키며 현실에서 찾아볼 수 없는 장소로 정의된다. 그러나 본 연구자는 작업을 발전시키면서 낙원을 꿈이나 상상에서 만날 수 있는 공간이 아닌 현실에서 볼 수 있는 자연의 모습으로 그리게 되었다. 특히 본 연구자는 꽃, 나무, 물 등으로 구성된 정원과 그 풍경 속에서 놀고 휴식하고 있는 동물들의 모습들이 보여주는 다양한 색감과 형상에서 행복한 감정을 느끼게 되었다. 그리고 이러한 경험은 실제로 이상세계에 온 것 같은 만족감을 가져다주었다. 이러한 이유로 본 연구자는 상상이 아닌 현실에 존재하는 정원, 동물이 존재하는 곳을 ‘낙원’으로 생각하였으며 그 이상적인 세상에 대해 탐구하고 연구해 보았다. 본 연구자는 앞에서 말한바와 같이 현실을 바탕으로 만들어진 낙원의 형상을 표현하였고, 그 모습을 그려나가는 과정에서 이상세계와 행복에 대한 사고를 전환시킬 수 있었다. 자신이 현실에서 꿈꾸는 낙원은 주변에 보이는 평범한 대상에서도 발견할 수 있으며, 자신이 삶에서 느끼는 행복은 현실을 바라보는 시각에 따라 마음껏 만들어낼 수 있다는 것을 연구를 통해 깨닫게 되었다.;During our time allowed on this planet, people dream of affluent life in numerous ways. Common sense tells us that material wealth is the driving force of ideal life of success and such social construct brings us down to suffer in endless competition. It is inevitable that such anarchic competition results in feeling of hopelessness and disparity. Meanwhile, people, who are the referent object of painful competition, seek to escape from chaotic reality. The final destination of escape provides mental comfort and heals them so that they can return back to reality with better state of mind. I have also attempted to find my very own hide away from the stress of reality so that I can be healed and find inner peace. One day, I was sleeping and within the dream, I have just glanced trough a utopian nature, where one can be emancipated from the stress of anarchy and genuinely appreciate the creation of the mother nature. Witnessing such imaginative paradise triggered to visualize again of what I have seen in my dream and portray on canvas. Paradise usually refers to utopia, or peach blossom island, which is an Asian portrayal of heavenly earth. No matter it is eastern or western view of paradise, they both share common trait in the sense that utopia exists only as imaginary world, which it is never found in the world we live in. However, as I was describing my paradise, I did not depict them as imaginary world of daydreaming, rather, attempted to draw as realistically as possible, yet with utopian touch and hue. Especially, a blooming garden with flower, forest and flow of water caught the attention in my dream and I felt happiness and joy when seeing different animals resting with comfort in the paradise. Such imagination and experience allowed me feel as if I was in ideal world that gave me comfort and relaxation. That was the motive behind creating my work on utopia more as the garden of animals, forest, and natural aspects that we easily can see in the real world nature, rather than imaginary paradise that looks too ideal to be seen in the real world. As mentioned above, portraying a paradise based on reality was the main goal of this project, and while doing so, I was able to shift the notion and understanding of ideal world and happiness. Everyone dreams of their own comfort zone where one can be emancipated and feel relaxed within the boundary of reality. Throughout my project, I was able to realize that utopian dream of reality can be appreciated and achieved even from any daily objects around. Further, the degree of happiness that one gets to feel can vary depending on what perspective each people has.
