여행의 기억을 형상화하는 표현방법 연구

Abstract

예술가에 있어서 자전적 기억은 그들의 작품을 형상화하는데 있어 중요한 역할을 한다. 본 연구에서는 여행에 대한 기억을 주제로 작업을 진행하고자 한다. 본 연구자가 생각하는 여행은 현재의 상황에서 벗어나고 싶은 마음을 표출할 수 있는 가장 효과적인 방법이며 동시에 여행에서 돌아왔을 때는 좀 더 현재에 대한 이해와 포용의 마음이 생기게 되며 일상의 소중함을 느낄 수 있게 해주는 계기라 본다. 그리고 다음 여행을 기대하며 현재에 활력을 불어 넣어주는 원동력의 역할도 한다. 여행을 하는 동안은 사소하거나 일상적인 사건, 풍경을 색다르게 느낄 수 있으며 그 안에서 아름다움을 만나면 그것을 붙들고, 소유하고, 의미를 부여하고 싶은 강한 충동을 받는다. 여행에서 느끼는 아름다움을 진정으로 소유하기 위해서는 자신만의 것으로 재창조하며 자신의 것으로 녹여내야 한다. 아무리 좋았던 여행지에서의 기억일지라도 시간이 지나면서, 혹은 또 다시 일상에 익숙해지면서 기억들은 희미해지고 일부는 잊혀지게 된다. 본 연구자는 이러한 점이 아쉬움으로 다가왔고 그리하여 기억이라는 것은 정확히 무엇인지, 개인이 받아들이는 기억의 조건과 어떻게 해야 기억을 잘 떠올릴 수 있는지를 알아보고 여행의 기억을 보존할 수 있는 작업을 하고자 한다. 본 연구자의 기억에 강하게 남는 여행의 요소들 중에는 건축물을 꼽을 수 있다. 주로 도시를 여행해 왔기에 어느 여행지를 가더라도 그곳을 대표하는 건축물은 항상 있었고 특히, 유럽을 여행하면서 보고 느끼는 중요한 관광대상은 다름 아닌 건축물이었다. 관광 자원으로서 뿐만 아니라, 그 나라의 문화척도로서 훌륭하고 아름다운 건축물은 예술품의 가치와 다를 바 없다. 건축물은 그 시대를 반영하기도 하고 과거의 시간을 보존하고 많은 사실과 역사를 담고 있는 그릇으로도 볼 수 있다. 그렇기에 본 연구자는 각각의 여행지의 분위기, 느낌을 담아내는 연구자만의 상징적인 건물을 건축하여 여행지에서의 기억을 보존하고자 하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 대주제인 여행에 대한 동기와 심리적인 요인들을 연구하고, 각각 여행지의 특성이 담긴 건축적 요소들, 벽돌에 대한 이론적 내용과 관련된 문헌을 연구하여 작품의 이론적 토대를 이루고, 여행이라는 공통된 주제를 가지고 표현하는 다른 작가들과의 작품들을 토대로 여행에 대한 그들의 생각을 알아본다. 본 연구의 주제 표현을 위해 색채에 대한 상징성과 의미들을 살펴보면서, 주된 모티프가 되는 건축적 표현을 다룬 작품들을 살펴보고, 투명성을 가진 다양한 재료들로 표현되는 작품에서의 투명성의 의미를 알아보며 손자수와 기계수에 대해서 연구하였다. 총 6점의 작품 제작을 통해 기억과 감정을 담은 벽돌들을 구축하고 배열하고자 했다. 연구자의 여행의 기억을 보존하면서도 좋은 기운을 공유할 수 있는 데에 중점을 두었다. 투명한 노방 천을 사용하여 흐릿한 기억을 표현하였고 도면을 통해 같은 크기의 벽돌들을 반복적으로 제작하여 하나하나 쌓아 건축의 형태를 이루 듯이 기억을 담은 벽돌들이 쌓여 그 곳의 전체적인 분위기와 감정을 형성하게 하여 보다 더 효과적인 주제 표현을 가능하게 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 여행에 대한 기억을 연구자의 시각과 감정을 담은 조형물로 시각화하여 좋았던 기억들을 보존하고자 한다. 또한 시각적으로 구체화한 상징적인 건축적 표현방법이 지친 현대인들에게 여행의 설레임과 기대감을 전해주며 여행에 대한 생각과 감정을 공유할 수 있는 연구가 되었으면 하며 연구자가 좋아하는 그 곳이 다른 이들에게도 좋은 곳이 되기를 기대한다. ;To artists, autobiographic memories play an important role in configuring their works. In this study, works were created with memories of travels as their themes. To the researcher, a travel is the most effective way of expressing the desire to get out of the present situation, and provides the traveler, on returning home, with an opportunity to be more thankful to the present and to feel the value of daily living. Moreover, expectation of another travel infuses vitality to the present moment. While travelling, the traveler feels even trifle things, daily episodes, and familiar scenes in a different way, and if he finds beauty in them he is strongly urged to hold it, possess it, and give a meaning to it. To be a genuine owner of beauty found in a travel, he should recreate it in his own way and melt it into himself. Over time or as we get used to the daily life again, even the best memories of travels get blurred and some of them are forgotten. Feeling sad at this, the researcher attempted to explore what a memory means exactly, what conditions should be satisfied for an individual to accept memories, and how memories can be recalled well, and to create works for preserving memories of travels. What are most impressive among the elements of travel that are left in the researcher’s memory are architectures. As most of places travelled were cities, there were always architectures representing the areas, and particularly in the European cities, the most prominent tourist attractions were architectures. Architectures are not merely tourist resources but also great and beautiful art works symbolizing the cultural level of the country. Architectures reflect the age, and at the same time, are vessels preserving the past time and containing many stories and histories. Therefore, the researcher tried to preserve the memories of travelled places by building symbolic buildings that carry the atmosphere and feeling of the places. For the theoretical base, this study examined motives and psychological factors related to travel, and reviewed literature on architectural elements characterizing each destination and theoretical contents about bricks. In addition, other artists’ thoughts of travel were explored based on their works expressing the common theme of travel. In order to express the themes of this study, the symbolism and meanings of color were studied, and works dealing with architectural expressions as their main motifs were examined. In addition, the meaning of transparency was discussed using works expressed with various transparent materials, and embroidery and sewing were studied as handcraft expression. Through a total of six works, bricks containing memories and emotions were built and arranged. The focus was placed on preserving the researcher’s memories of travels, and at the same time, sharing good atmosphere. Vague memories were expressed using transparent organza, and bricks of the same size were made using a pattern and the bricks, containing memories, were built one by one in the form of architecture. These brick buildings created general atmosphere and emotion and enabled the more effective expression of the themes. In this study, the researcher attempted to preserve good memories by visualizing memories of travels with formative objects containing the researcher’s perspective and emotion. What is more, the symbolic architectural expressions, which are visually concrete, are expected to give today’s exhausted people the excitement and expectation of travel, to promote the sharing of thoughts and emotions about traveling, and to introduce the researcher’s favorite places of traveling to others.
