Abstract
Mononuclear metal-oxygen species, such as metal-superoxo, -peroxo, -hydroperoxo, and -oxo, have attracted much attention in the communities of bioinorganic and biological chemistry. In this study, we report for the first time the generation of nonheme nickel(II)-hydroperoxo species, [NiII(14-TMC)(OOH)]+ and [NiII(13-TMC)(OOH)]+, which are the decayed products of [NiII(14-TMC)(O2)]+ and [NiII(13-TMC)(O2)]+, in CH3CN at -40 oC,respectively. The nickel(II)-hydroperoxo species, [NiII(14-TMC)(OOH)]+ and [NiII(13-TMC)(OOH)]+, were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, such as UV-vis, electrospray ionization mass, resonance Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. The reactivity of the nickel(II)-hydroperoxo species were investigated in electrophilic and nucleophilic oxidation reactions, however, no reactions occurred. Interestingly, the natural decays of these nickel(II)-hydroperoxo species showed that their decayed products were tentatively assignable to nickel(IV)-oxo species. Further investigations are required to identify the exact nature of these new intermediates.
