Richard Strauss의 “Sechs Brentano Lieder, Op. 68”연구

Abstract

Art songs are created by combining music and texts. A song composer chooses texts to write his musical impression on music. In Europe, Romantic Era of the 19th century was the period in which romantic writers wrote great literary works. With those romantic works, many music composers could expand their capability of musical expression. “Sechs Brentano Lieder, Op. 68,” which is the piece that I performed at my graduate performance, was composed by Richard Strauss(1864-1949). He took the texts from the works of the romantic writer Clemens Brentano(1778-1842), whose works were admired by great writers such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe(1749-1832), Heinrich Heine(1797-1856), and Joseph von Freiherr Eichendorff(1788-1857). In Korea, some musical scholars have studied the art songs of R. Strauss and there are several thesis on the “Sechs Brentano Lieder, Op. 68.” However, most of them have only focused on R. Strauss and his music. Few studies have dealt with C. Brentano’s life, thoughts, and whole story of the original works. In this respect, this thesis aims to have a proper understanding of C. Brentano and his texts. This study is based on the original texts of Brentano’s works which is translated into Korean by the writer. It introduces the original story from the viewpoint of the reciters of the texts, and also briefly analyses R. Strauss’s music with the Lyrics. The result of this study shows that C. Brentano’s poetry was misunderstood by some scholars. Even some essays presented wrong translations and stories. Through this study, it became easier to materialize the messages of the lyrics than to understand the lyrics without knowing the details of the original works. The writer hopes this thesis would be a help to performers to sing the R. Strauss’s art songs with more objective expression and emotional appealing.;이 논문은 낭만주의 음악가 리하르트 슈트라우스(Richard Strauss, 1864-1949)가 낭만주의 문인 클레멘스 브렌타노(Clemens Brentano, 1778-1842)의 시를 사용해 만든 예술가곡 “Sechs Brentano Lieder, Op. 68”에 대해 브렌타노의 시를 중심으로 정리한 것이다. 기존의 “Sechs Brentano Lieder, Op. 68”에 대한 연구들에서는 작곡가와 음악적 요소에 대해서는 깊이 있게 다뤄지고 있으나 가사의 저자와 가사 자체에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 잘 다뤄지지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 브렌타노의 작품세계를 브렌타노의 삶과 사상, 그리고 “Sechs Brentano Lieder, Op. 68”에 사용된 브렌타노의 가사와 그것의 출처가 되는 문학작품의 내용을 통하여 정리하고, 이것이 슈트라우스의 음악과 어떻게 결합하였는가를 연구하였다. 총 6곡으로 이루어진 “Sechs Brentano Lieder, Op. 68”중, 필자가 석사과정 졸업 리사이틀에서 실제로 연주했던 제 1-4곡 가사를 가사의 출처인 독문 원작들을 직접 읽고 번역하여 원작들의 줄거리와 등장인물들을 소개하였다. 또 가사로 사용된 시가 원작의 내용 중 어떤 상황에 나오는 누구의 시 혹은 노래인지 소개하였으며, 이러한 브렌타노의 시를 슈트라우스가 어떻게 받아들이고 음악으로 표현했는지 간략하게 가사와 악보를 통하여 고찰하였다. 이러한 방법으로 브렌타노의 가사들을 살펴본 결과, 가사에 대하여 그동안 잘못 알려지거나 오역된 부분들이 있었음을 알 수 있었고, 저자와 작곡가의 의도와는 다르게 해석될 수 있는 부분들이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 가사가 묘사하고자하는 상황과 전달하려는 메시지를 가사 자체만을 번역하여 이해하는 것보다 좀 더 구체적으로 그려내 볼 수 있었다. ‘An die Nacht’는 브렌타노의 역사신화극 『프라하의 건설 Die Gründung Prags』에서 주인공 리부사(Libussa)를 따르는 소녀들이 부르는 노래로, 나라가 탄생하기 전의 신비로운 기운을 묘사하는 축제적이면서도 고요한 의미의 거룩함을 그려내고 있다. ‘Ich wollt ein Sträusslein binden’은 브렌타노의 희극 『퐁스 드 레옹 Ponce de Leon』에 나오는 발레리아(Valeria)가 실연의 아픔을 노래한 것인데, 원작의 내용에 비추어 보면 이 노래는 심각하게 절망스러운 실연을 표현한 것은 아니며, 결과적으로 가볍고 허상적인 사랑이었음을 짐작해볼 수 있다. ‘Säusle, liebe Myrte’는 브렌타노의 동화 『이탈리아 동화 Italienische Märchen』중 “미르테 나무 아가씨 이야기 Das Märchen von dem Myrtenfräulein”에 실린 세 노래를 하나로 합친 것이다. 화자는 두 명으로, 미르테 나무 아가씨와 왕자가 서로 주고받는 노래들이다. ‘Als mir dein Lied erklang’는 브렌타노의 비극『알로이스와 이멜데 Aloys und Imelde』에 나오는 알로이스의 시로 알려졌으나, 『알로이스와 이멜데』에서는 시를 찾을 수 없고, 다만 ‘Als mir dein Lied erklang’의 원 시라고 하는 ‘Die Rose blüht’만이 실려 있다. ‘Die Rose blüht’가 감각적이고 자극적으로 해석될 수 있는 시어들을 포함한 것과 다르게, 이를 변형한 ‘Als mir dein Lied erklang’에는 현재 자신의 곁에 없는 연인에 대한 그리움이 진솔하고 짙게 묻어난다.
