Rebecca Clarke의 Sonata for Viola and Piano에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 레베카 클라크(Rebecca Clarke, 1886 - 1979)의 「비올라와 피아노를 위한 소나타 ( Sonata for Viola and Piano, 1919 ) 」 에 관한 분석 연구이다. 19세기 말 20세기 초 남성 중심의 음악 세계에서 여성이라는 사실로 클라크의 음악활동에 큰 걸림돌이 되었다. 이러한 사회적 편견과 여러 고비를 극복하고 비올라를 통해 그녀의 가치를 인정받아 중요한 여성 작곡가로 평가되고 있는 영국의 여류 음악 작곡가이자 비올라 연주자인 레베카 헬퍼리히 클라크( Rebecca Helferich Clarke, 1886 - 1979 )는 19-20세기에 걸쳐 비올라의 독주악기로서의 가치를 높게 재평가하게 한 중요한 작곡가이다. 비올라의 레퍼토리가 많지 않았던 당대 남성 중심 사회에서 여성으로써 현재 비올라의 대표 곡 중 하나라고 할 수 있는 비올라를 위한 소나타를 작곡한 점에 흥미를 느끼게 되어 본 논문에서는 1919년 작곡된 <비올라 소나타>를 분석하려 한다. 레베카 클라크의 비올라 소나타는 당시 시대상을 반영한 듯 남성적인 크고 웅장하게 표현된 부분과 여성작곡가임을 잃지 않게 하려는 듯 세심하고 조심스러운 표현력을 함께 지니고 있다. 여성으로써 훌륭한 작곡가이자 비올리스트였던 그녀가 처음 작곡한 비올라 소나타에서 그녀의 음악적 특징과 그녀가 보여주고자 한 비올라의 특징에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 분석에 앞서 비올라 소나타를 작곡하게 된 작품배경과 19세기말 20세기 초 현악기의 발전으로 전성기를 맞이하여 재평가 받게 된 비올라로 인해 새로운 인생을 살게 된 레베카 클라크의 생애와 비올라 소나타의 음악적 특징과 형식에 대해 연구해보려 한다.;Rebecca Helferich Clarke(1886-1979), an English female composer and a violist, was an important composer who made a highly revaluation of the 19th century viola. In male-inclined music environment from the last of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century she overcame social prejudice and the critical moment and her value was recognized through viola. In music Clarke expressed her various experiences suffered in life, a difficult family life caused by poor relationship with her father. And when women were not active she attempted to create a work that best represents the characteristics of the viola through using appropriate features of new composing skills and of various musical era out of forms in her first composed viola sonata. Her work, Sonata for viola and piano(1919), is a work featuring latter romanticism. Although a key-signature is in this work, tonality and harmony do not function. Also this work leads diverse musical tints employing a pentatonic scale, full scale, mode scale, seeming influenced by the early 20c impressionism music regarding music color and impression as important. Rebecca Clarke followed 20c features in harmony but seems having a classical trend in form. This work, total 3 movements, has sonata form, rondo form, and rondo sonata form. Although having much form-free compared to 18c strict form, this work appeared in time of destroying the system in form and tonality in the early 20c. This fact shows her progressive and classical disposition. Through Rebecca Clarke's most important work, Sonata for viola and piano, being estimated featuring well viola, I have investigated musical and music-historical characteristics and have analyzed form, harmony, and rhythmic element etc. according to 3 movements.
