The buzzword of today’s fashion industry is the creation of high added value through convergence of IT devices and fashion. The ever-evolving IT industry has greatly enhanced access to mobile devices, especially Smartphones. Harnessing the power of Smartphones to further enhance convergence of fashion and IT industry, therefore, will be a highly effective way to create synergy in the fashion industry. In this context, this study attempts to suggest how IT technology can be efficiently harnessed through the usage of mobile devices at the planning stage of fashion materials, where the initial production plan of a clothing item is mapped out. In theory, the aim here is to improve accessibility of and expand the scope of effective ways to use a fashion textile database by embedding NFC functions in a Smartphone. In its more concrete form, a program has been designed under this study that will serve the following function: first, NFC stickers are attached to each clothing textile sample. When information contained in the NFC stickers are tagged by the user using the program, the user can immediately view this information from a Smartphone. Information of each clothing sample such composition, sales information, the image of the clothing item from the fabric in its finalized product form, and the video of the model wearing the item is displayed on the Smartphone device. To pursue this research, data on fashion material information were provided by 200 fabric companies. Composition, weight, width, yarn, density, sales report and other pieces of information are organized into data lists. First, this study attempted to run this data system using already existing Android applications. Going a step further, the study presents two new types of applications to complement the drawbacks and inconveniences of using pre-existing applications. Results of this study are as follows: 1. Running the system on NFC TOOLS (PRO), an already existing Android application, delivered the very basic functions, but at the same time revealed many limitations. In addition, much to user inconvenience, no single application could cover all functions necessary, which meant that two or more applications had to be run simultaneously instead of one. This resulted in prolonged running time. As the program was also not easy to implement, developing a new program was necessary. 2. The issues of long running time and inconvenient implementation that NFC TOOLS (PRO) had were, to some extent, resolved when Google Spreadsheet was used. As this application, however, was based on already existing data, an extra step of accessing the Google Spreadsheet was added to the process. Due to this extra step, the total running time did not improve much. What made it more inconvenient was that the user was required to access the Google Drive via the exact same e-mail account as the Google e-mail account originally registered to the mobile device. 3. To make up for the drawbacks arising from the two methods mentioned above, this study developed an Android application using MySQL database. This dramatically shortened the running time, especially compared to when the system was run on preexisting Android applications or applications based on Google Spreadsheet. The new application also allows the user to view photos and videos on a single display system. As adding data to a MySQL database is simple, users can also easily design and use similar programs on their own - which presents yet another strength of this new application. This program has much potential to be harnessed by diverse entities for diverse purposes - be it textile companies that design and sell fabrics, businesses and designers who purchase such textiles, or consumers of fashion items. The fashion industry will see many ways to use this application, which will serve as a solid fundamental resource in the NFC-enabled fashion industry.-
