Abstract
The life force of nature has long provided massive materials for art. All creatures in nature have their own reasons for existence and roles, and formativity can be found in their exteriors. Microorganisms have stronger life force than any other creatures and repeat the process of birth, reproduction, and extinction constantly without staying in certain forms. They are too small to be seen with a naked eye, but they do have mysterious life force and their own unique forms. Individual microorganisms of similar forms build a community, thus reproducing and demonstrating their life force. This study set out to introduce the biological forms of microorganisms in formative works and do the design works. The mysterious life force and formative shapes found in the organic cyclic processes of molds, yeasts, and bacteria, some of representative microorganisms, were to be expressed from a subjective perspective. For those works, the investigator made a theoretical approach to the life force of nature and conducted literature study to explore the biological forms of microorganisms. The characteristics of wool and red colors were examined as the materials and used to express the topics of formative works. It was also examined whether pattern repetition would be proper to express the reproduction of microorganisms based on the understanding of its effects. Also examined in the study were the meanings of repetitive acts through the needle felting technique, a principle technique for the works, and the unique texture of needle felt works, the products of acts. The study provided an opportunity to reestablish the concept of close relations between the life force of nature and art and broaden the discerning eye of understanding a new formative world by perceiving the biological forms of microorganisms as objects of aesthetic expression. It was also confirmed that wool was an attractive material to express a unique texture and found that it had the possibilities of being incorporated into the motif called microorganisms with life force. The investigator was convinced that repetitive acts of making a work in the needle felting technique were an expressive means to fulfill formativity sought after by her and further determined to make new attempts and conduct in-depth research in her formative activities in the future.
