Abstract
Along with the term ‘barley hump of income’ meaning a long-term income-cutting period after retirement, recently ‘barley hump of cheap money’ is being raised as a social issue. Such a changed interest rate caused increase of financial consumers to search for an alternative for filling a financial gap after retirement, making them interested in direct·indirect investment as an alternative. As for fund, monthly investment has been attracting increased attention continually since 2005, reaching a level that individual fund investor has 41 funds averagely according to 2013 fund investors survey. Eventually, expansion of fund investment and increase of consumers’ interest lead to research on family fund investment behavior. In our nation, various kinds of research have been conducted on fund investors since 2015. Also, more detailed studies have been carried out for financial consumers regardless of sex on their fund investment behavior, understanding of fund investment, decision-making factors of fund investment since 2007 fund investors survey regarded as the substantial research. However, in our nation’s population, females outnumber males, showing that the ratio of women is higher on college and employment percentage than that of men. It suggests that a lot of women are active in many social fields with increased educational level and the standard of living so come to have higher weight as financial consumers compared with the past Hence, rather than the existing research methodology for financial consumers regardless of sex, necessity and importance of research to examine the effect of investors’ sex on investment activity or performance including Byeon Young-Hun(2005), Im Mi-Ja, Ju Woo-Jin, Lee Eun-Ju(2010), Lee Eui-Kyeong(2013) are increasing but there are few domestic studies yet. So, based on ‘2014 Fund Investors Survey’ raw data by Korea Financial Investors Protection Foundation, this study examined sexual difference of fund investors on a present situation, behavior, performance and understanding of fund investment along with fund investors education. By identifying if our nation’s female fund investors are vulnerable financial consumers, this study aims at expanding understanding on female investors and offering specific data for discussion about fund investors. Besides, it is expected to be useful basic data for financial institutions on investment education, counseling and design fitting for investors through a comparative analysis by sex, Research findings are as follows. Firstly, fund investors showed a difference in academic background, occupation and investment propensity according to sex. Female respondents were lower than males in academic backgrounds, showing higher in housewives and others for occupation than males. As for the investment propensity, it showed that there were many respondents having a lower risk-taking tendency. Secondly, as for the investment situation according to sex, as a result of examining after setting the number and type of fund holding, mode, the total amount, retention period of fund investment and a main fund seller as variables, there was no statistically significant difference in every variable. Thirdly, as for the investment behavior according to sex, there was difference in object of fund investment, acquisition method of fund information, pre-decision for fund and consideration for fund products. Many female respondents compared with males aimed to prepare for their old age/retirement and maintain/expand their assets, showing a higher ratio of acquiring information from financial company’s staff or people around them. As for pre-decision for fund, there were a lot of respondents to select fund after visiting a fund selling company. As for the consideration for fund products, they showed higher than males in performance of pertinent fund, past performance of a fund asset management company, fund having a high flow and a fund setting date. Fourthly, as for the fund investment performance according to sex, there was difference in importance of the principal vs yield, resale experience, future fund investment intention. It showed that there were many females to think much of the preservation of the principal than males, showing a higher ratio in resale experience than males. Also, as for the future fund investment intention, on five items composed of having an intention + status quo, having an intention+ investment increase, having an intention + investment decrease, stopping and having no idea, females showed a higher ratio than males in every item excepting the item having an intention + investment increase. Fifthly, as for the understanding of fund investors according to sex, it showed difference in understanding on the joined fund, difficulty in and dissatisfaction at investment that investor feels. In case of understanding on the joined fund, as a result of examining how much they knew after suggesting 7 questions on the fund joined recently, it showed that females had lower understanding in every question than males. Furthermore, in case of difficulty and dissatisfaction at investment that investor feels, as a result of examining it after suggesting 9 related questions, it showed both males and females felt difficulty in and dissatisfaction at fund but females were higher than males. Also, females felt more satisfaction at fund than stock investment than males. Sixthly, as for the investor education by sex, it showed difference in institutions and methods they preferred. Compared with males, more female respondents preferred public institutions, media and cultural centers of department stores. As for the educational method preferred, in 4 questions of lecturing, online, audio-visual education and self-learning by books, ratio of women was higher than that of men in every question excepting online education. Seventhly, in an analysis on factors influencing investment, significant values were identified for sex and age, marital status, financial asset and investment propensity. Males, more than 40s aged, unmarried, less than a hundred million of financial assets and stable investment propensity had an effect on investment, eventually showing a higher probability of fund investment. Research findings so far show that women may be classified into the vulnerable fund investors. However, this study assets that women showed lower figures in many variables since they had a stable investment propensity so they cannot be regarded as vulnerable investors. As shown from the research by Seong Young-Ae(2011), there are research that aggressive act of males’ fund investment for high yield means that they can be exposed to more risks so it is difficult to conclude that they have higher investment performance than women having an unconditionally stable investment propensity. Hence, as a result of analyzing causes of difference in fund investment behavior and performance by sex, it is assumed to result from statistically significant difference in academic background and occupation. Therefore, it is regarded to have a result different from above if reducing difference in academic background and occupation by sex. Such research findings suggest the necessity of education differentiated according to sex, academic background and occupation.;최근 은퇴 이후 장기화가 예상되는 소득 단절기간을 의미하는 용어로 사용된 ‘소득 보릿고개’와 함께 ‘저금리 보릿고개’가 사회문제로 이슈화되고 있다.
