Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate music therapy intern's perception of evidence-based music therapy practice. A total of 95 online questionnaires were initially distributed to music therapy interns from 11 undergraduate and graduate schools and 52 responses were returned and included for analysis. The questionnaire was constructed to ask music therapy interns about demographic information and their perception of evidence-based music therapy practice. The results of the study showed that more than half of the respondents have not heard about the concept of evidence-based music therapy practice before and interns at the graduate course have learnt the concept more than interns at the undergraduate course. Most of the respondents reported to learn the concept from academic courses at their schools. When respondents attempted to address problems in their clinical practice, the most frequently referred source was advice from music therapy supervisor or academic advisor, followed by music therapy books and Korean-written research articles. Also, the results showed that respondents have generally considered evidence from clients, research, and their experiences for better practice. Although they agreed with the importance of evidence-based music therapy practice, they perceived the limitation in applying the concept to their practice. This study indicate the needs for increased opportunity of education and training related to evidence-based music therapy practice. It also presents the implication for support of music therapy trainee to involve in evidence-based music therapy practice for enhancing their competency as professionals with the provision of increased access to resources.
