짐 다인(Jim Dine)작업에 나타난 존재론적 성찰

Abstract

본 논문은 짐 다인(Jim Din, 1935-)의 작업에 나타난 존재론적 성찰에 관한 연구이다. 짐 다인은 1950년대 말 뉴욕(New York) 화단에 본격적으로 등장하여 현재에 이르기까지 다양한 장르와 모티브, 표현 기법을 통해 존재에 대한 근본적인 성찰을 보여주고 있다. 그의 작업에 나타난 존재론적 의미들은 ‘나는 누구인가’라는 인식과 탐구에서 출발한다. 이러한 물음은 인간의 삶과 존재의 질서에 대한 탐구로 이어지는데, 무엇보다 인간이라면 누구도 피할 수 없는 죽음에 대한 고찰과 인간에 내재된 본능적 속성이 시각화되어 나타난다. 짐 다인이 미술계에서 활동을 시작할 무렵은 당시 미국 미술계를 주도하고 있었던 추상표현주의를 벗어나려는 새로운 경향의 미술이 활발히 시도되고 있던 시기였다. 짐 다인 역시 동료 작가들과 함께 환경미술과 해프닝(Happening) 등 새로운 미술의 영역을 개척해 나갔으며 팝아트 작가의 반열에 오르기도 하였다. 그러나 그의 작업들은 당대 함께 활동했던 네오다다이스트나 팝아티스트와는 달리 매우 개인적인 동기로 인해 제작되었으며 작품의 내용 역시 자전적인 양상을 띠는 특징을 보였다. 그러나 대부분의 현대미술사 연구에서는 그를 팝아트 사조에 편입시켜 그의 작업에 나타난 차별화된 특징들을 간과한 경우가 많았다. 따라서 본 논문은 짐 다인의 작업이 개인적 동기와 내면의 성찰에서 비롯된 것임에 주목하고 또한 그가 자신의 예술을 표현주의의 맥을 잇는 것으로 규정한 것에 착안하여 그의 작업 세계를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 짐 다인의 사적인 경험과 그에게 영감을 준 이전 작가들의 세계관과 조형적 태도, 그리고 그가 활동한 미술계의 상황을 총체적으로 고려하여 그의 작품에 나타난 일관된 주제를 구체적으로 분석하였다. 짐 다인의 작업에 나타난 존재론적 성찰은 그가 살아온 경험의 축적에서 비롯된 것으로 삶에 대한 진지한 사유가 반영된 것이다. 특히 아동기 때 맞이해야 했던 어머니의 죽음은 삶과 죽음의 문제에 대해 생각하게 되는 중요한 계기가 된다. 또한 1957년부터 오랜 세월 동안 여러 차례 받게 된 정신분석 치료는 자신의 무의식을 탐구하고 자신의 내면과 욕망에 대해 성찰하게 되는 배경이 되었다. 또한 그는 미술뿐 아니라 시작(詩作)에도 지대한 관심을 보였는데, 시 집필을 통해 인간과 자연, 삶에 대해 폭넓고 심도 있는 이해와 성찰로 나아가게 되었다. 자아의 탐구에서 비롯한 짐 다인의 존재론적 성찰은 자신의 형상을 직접적으로 그린 자화상에서부터 또 다른 대리물에 자신을 투영한 작업들, 그리고 신체 행위를 통한 퍼포먼스 작업을 통해 나타난다. 자화상은 자신에 대한 이해와 성찰이 가장 직접적으로 드러나는 방식으로 짐 다인은 활동 초기부터 현재까지 지속적으로 자화상을 제작하고 있다. 짐 다인 작업의 두드러진 특징 중 하나는 다른 대상을 통해 자신을 은유적으로 드러내고 있다는 점인데, 이러한 대리물은 사물이나 동물, 인형까지 그의 작업 전반에 꾸준히 등장한다. 이러한 자아의 탐구는 곧 예술가로서의 정체성의 탐구로 이어지는데, 짐 다인의 초기 해프닝 작업들에서는 예술가로서 자신을 확인하고자 하는 고뇌와 노력이 발견된다. 또한 짐 다인의 작업은 모든 인간이 숙명적으로 갖는 존재의 유한성, 즉 죽음에 대한 숙고가 퍼포먼스 작업을 비롯한 다양한 모티브와 표현 방식을 통해 나타난다. 특히 자신이 겪은 교통사고를 퍼포먼스로 재현함으로써 생명의 위협으로부터 오는 공포와 불안을 표출하였다. 또한 세월이 흐름에 따라 다양한 상징물을 통하여 삶과 죽음의 순환성과 인생의 덧없음을 작품을 통해 형상화하였다. 짐 다인 작업에 나타난 존재론적 성찰은 자신을 비롯한 인간과 세계에 대한 근본적인 이해가 바탕이 된 것으로, 구체적이고 주관적인 경험으로부터 보편적인 탐구에 다다르는 하나의 예술적 실현이었다.;This thesis looks into the existential reflection appeared in the work of Jim Dine (1935~present). After making a debut in the art world of New York in the late 1950s, Jim Dine has shown a fundamental reflection on the existence through a variety of genres, motifs and expressive techniques until the present moment. Ontological meanings appeared in his works are derived from the recognition and exploration of the ego, which started from asking the following question - ‘who am I?’ This question leads to the exploration of the order of human life and existence. And in his works, the reflection on the death that no one can escape and instinctive human attributes inherent in humans are visualized. When Jim Dine first took his works to the art world, the US art world was vigorously making endeavors to break away from abstract expressionism, which dominated the US art world back then, to try a new art movement. Together with his colleague artists, Jim Dine made an attempt to pioneer new areas of art such as environmental art and happening and joined the ranks of pop artists. Unlike works created by neo-dadaists and other pop artists, his works were created by highly personal motivations and the contents of his works have autobiographic aspects. However, the majority of modern art history studies have overlooked distinctive characteristics observed in his works as they classified his works into the category of pop art. Against such backdrop, this thesis focuses on the fact that Jim Dine’s works are driven by personal motives and inner reflection and he once defined his works as a legacy carried over from expressionist works in looking into his art world. To that end, this thesis takes into account his personal experiences, world views, formative attitudes of other artists who gave him the inspiration for his works and the overall circumstances of the art world he was engaging in analyzing a consistent theme shown in his works. Existential reflection revealed in his works stems from the accumulation of his life experiences based on his serious and rich thoughts about life. In particular, the death of his mother, which he had to deal with when he was young, made him think about life and death. In addition, the psychoanalytic therapy he underwent many times for a long period of time since 1975 served as an opportunity for him to explore the unconscious mind, his inner world and desires. Jim Dine also had a strong interest in writing poetry. Through writing poetry, he was able to build a broad and in-depth understanding and examination of human beings, nature and life. Jim Dine’s existential reflection, which stems from his exploration of the self, is displayed in his self-portraits, works where he is projected onto other objects and other performance work involving physical action. As a way of expressing his understanding of himself and introspection directly, Jim Ding has drawn a wide range of self-portraits from early in his artistic career till today. One of the distinctive characteristics of Jim Dine’s works is that he has consistently revealed himself metaphorically in his works through other things like objects, animals and dolls. Such exploration of the self then led to the exploration of his identity as an artist. The anguish and determined effort he made to confirm his identity as an artist are found in his early happenings. Furthermore, the fateful finiteness of human existence - his contemplation of death - is expressed through various motifs and expression methods such as performance work. In particular, he expressed the fear and anxiety coming from a life threatening event by his performance work created based on his personal experience of a car accident. Jim Dine also has given shape to the circularity of life and death and transience of life in his works through diverse symbols. Existential reflection shown in Jim Dine’s works is based on his fundamental understanding of human beings and the world, and tells us that his works constitute the artistic realization of a universal quest for exploration of the self rooted in specific and subjective experiences.
