프랭크 스텔라의 평면회화 이미지를 응용한 핸드백 디자인 연구

Abstract

현대 패션에 있어서 가방은 패션에 완성도를 높여주는 필수 아이템이다. 다양한 라이프스타일 속에 살아가는 현대인은 미적욕구 뿐만 아니라 자신의 자아실현을 위한 매개체로서 핸드백에 개성을 추구하고 있다. 디자이너는 개성과 창의성이 부여된 다양한 디자인 개발을 위해 다각적으로 디자인 원천를 탐색하고 발굴해 낸다. 그중 회화는 디자인의 풍부한 영감원천으로 활용이 되는데 본 연구에서는 프랭크 스텔라의 평면회화를 대상으로 하여 그 조형성을 분석해 디자인 모티프로 도입하였다. 프랭크 스텔라(Frank Stella) 후기 회화적 추상주의 작가로 특유의 기하학적 추상기법을 통해 추상회화의 새로운 가능성을 제시하였는데 본 연구에서는 초기 평면회화시기의 14개의 작품 시리즈 중 4개 시리즈 9작품을 표현 모티프로 선택하였다. 이에 본 연구에서는 프랭크 스텔라의 작품에 관한 고찰 후, 2013 S/S부터 2015 F/W까지의 패션에서 보여진 핸드백 트렌드를 분석하고, 2016 S/S 예상 트렌드 자료를 참고하여 프랭크 스텔라의 작품 이미지를 응용한 핸드백 브랜드를 기획하고자 한다. 이 신규 브랜드는 지오메트릭(Geometric) & 컨템포러리(Contemporary) 감성이 강조된 새로운 핸드백 디자인을 개발하여 기존 핸드백 디자인과 차별화된 모던한 도시적 감성의 새로운 이미지를 제안하여 소비자의 감성적 욕구를 충족하고 더 나아가 핸드백 시장의 활성화에 목적을 둔다. 이론적 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 2차 세계대전 이후 미술계를 주도한 미국의 미술에서 후기 회화적 추상은 유럽미술의 파생된 부분이 아닌 미국미술만의 독자적인 경향을 띄며 발전하였다. 프랭크 스텔라의 작품은 초기 추상표현주의가 쇠하는 시점에 나타나 그린버그의 모더니즘 형식주의와 로버트 라우센버그(Robert Rauschenberg), 제스퍼 존스(Jasper Johns)의 작품에서 영향을 받아 평면성을 지닌 블랙 줄무늬회화로 후기 회화적 추상을 이끌었고, 이후 미니멀리즘과도 연결된다. 둘째, 프랭크 스텔라는 쉐이프트 캔버스(shaped canves)를 통하여 회화가 사각형의 테두리 안에 종속되는 것이 아닌 3차원의 사물과 같이 취급 될 수 있게 하였다. 줄무늬시리즈에서는 다양한 캔버스의 변형과 그 안의 줄무늬의 일치시키며 대칭, 균형미 반복에 의한 단순미를 보여주었다. 불규칙다각형과 각도기 시리즈에서는 정해진 쉐이프트 캔버스 안에 다양한 패턴을 접목하여 비대칭적이고 장식적인 작품을 선보였다. 셋째, 프랭크 스텔라는 색채에 끊임없는 관심을 보였다. 블랙 줄무늬시리즈에 잘 사용하지 않던 블랙 에나멜을 사용하였고, 이후 시리즈에서는 알루미늄, 구리, 자색, 납, 아연등 의 금속성 페인트를 사용하였다. 또한 모로칸 시리즈, 페르시아시리즈 그리고 불규칙 다각형 시리즈에서도 다양한 색채조합에 몰두했음을 볼 수 있으며, 분도기 시리즈시기에서 색채연구는 완성된 것으로 나타난다. 넷째, 2013 S/S부터 2015 F/W까지 현대 핸드백 디자인의 최근 경향을 분석한 결과 형태 부분에서는 미니백, 클러치백, 새들백이 강세를 보임을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 실용성을 강조하는 쇼퍼백, 볼링백, 사첼백등이 아이템의 빅백류들이 꾸준히 제안되었다. 전반적으로 레이디라이크 무드가 이어지면서 파우더리하고 브라이트 칼라의 비중이 크고, 트렌드와 관계없이 화이트와 블랙이 꾸준히 보여졌다. 시즌마다 두가지이상의 컬러 콤비네이션이 보이는 경향이 있었다. 또한 실버 메탈 부자재나 실버, 골드등의 메탈릭소재는 룩에 화려함을 더하거나 악센트로 꾸준히 나타나고 있다. 작품 제작을 통한 본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 프랭크 스텔라의 기하학적 추상회화의 이미지를 응용한 결과 핸드백 디자인에 견고하고 명쾌한 기하학적 감성을 표출시킬 수 있었다. 둘째, 첫 번째 테마인 “Authentic Value'는 프랭크 스텔라의 평면회화 중 줄무늬회화시리즈를 응용하여 기존 가방의 형태를 벗어난 새로운 형태를 제시할 수 있었다. 아울러 기하학적이고 모던하면서 무게감이 있는 이미지를 살릴 수 있었다. 셋째, 두 번째 테마인 'Formative Utopia'는 프랭크 스텔라의 평면회화 중 불규칙 다각형 시리즈에서 보여 지는 컬러 베리에이션과 비대칭적 형태미를 응용하여 밝고 경쾌하며 액티브 한 감성을 표현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 비건 레더인 폴리우레탄 소재를 사용함으로써 천연소재에 비해 가방 크기에 제약이 적고 제작 시 경제적임을 확인할 수 있었다. 이에 본 연구자는 앞으로 프랭크 스텔라의 회화를 응용한 후속 연구가 심도 있고 체계적으로 확대 전개되길 기대하며 더 나아가 다양한 회화 이미지를 응용하여 시즌의 감성을 돋보이게 하는 브랜드 제품이 보다 새롭고 다양하게 제안되길 기대한다. 또한, 국내에서는 아직 활성화되지 않은 비건 레더를 사용하고 아트적 감성을 융합하여 긍정적인 효과를 도출할 수 있는 차별화된 컨셉과 정체성을 유지한 신규 핸드백 브랜드들이 계속해서 등장하여 핸드백 시장에 새로운 활력을 불어 넣어 주기를 기대한다.;In the current fashion industry, bags are necessary items for the completion of most fashion styles. People living with various lifestyles pursue the diversity of bags as a means of fulfilling esthetic desire and a medium of individuality and self-realization. Designers explore multilateral sources for the design of their products; this reflects the designer's personality and creativity in order to develop various types of designs. Paintings have been used as a diverse sources from which designers draw inspiration for new designs. The creation of designs resulting from analyzing Frank Stella's flat paintings is introduced as a design motive of this study. Through Frank Stella's unique geometrical abstraction, 4 series out of 15 work series in first flat painting period are used, thereby resulting in 9 pieces of art, in the form of handbags; this study seeks to explore such artistic potential. This study started off with theoretical analysis of Frank Stella’s paintings; handbag trends were also analyzed based on fashion collections from 2013 S/S to 2015 F/W. Afterwards, pre-trend data was referenced, with the planned launch of a handbag collection inspired from Frank Stella’s artwork. This new brand possesses features of Geometric & Contemporary styling to convey an image of urban sensibility, which differentiates it from standard bag designs. The aim is to energize the handbag market and satisfy the customer’s desire for sensible and stylish accessories. Results from the studies have shown the following: First, Post-painterly abstraction in American art after the second world war developed independently from European art, rather than being a derivative of it. Frank Stella's work started at the point when abstract expressionism declined; his work was also influenced by Clement Greenberg's formalistic theory, as well as work by Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. As a result, his paintings offered much to Post-Painterly Abstraction with a depersonalized, discrete and flat style which is also features minimalistic appeal. Second, Frank Stella made use of shaped canvas in order to give his paintings a three dimensional appearance, breaking out of the boundaries of a square frame. The striped series shows symmetry, equilibrium and simplicity through repetition; the canvas and stripes are intentionally shaped and lined up to create these artistic effects on the shaped canvas. The irregular polygon series and protractor shows various patterns and effects on a fixed shaped canvas. Third, Frank Stella is interested in how color specifically interacts with certain pieces of work. In the black striped series, he used black enamel paint that was not ever known to be used. After that, he used metallic paints like aluminum, iron, purple, lead and zinc in his artwork series. He also used colors to a specific effect by combining colors in the Moroccan series, Persia series and irregular polygon series - chromatics research was particularly important in the protractor series. Fourth, as a result of the evolving trend of latest hand bag usage. From 2013 S/S to 2015 F/W, a few styles have been on the rise: Saddle bags, mini bags, and clutch bags. At the same time, practical bags such as shopper bags, satchel bags and bowling bags are continuously being promoted. With the current popularity of the lady-like trend, powdery and bright color are more often preferred, while white and black are still strong color options regardless of current trends. Each season tends to show the combination of more than two colors. Silver, metallic subsidiary materials or metallic materials such as silver, gold and so on, continue to be used to add a luxurious feel or accent to the overall look. The conclusions following the analysis are as follows. First, as a result of applying the images of Frank Stellar's geometric paintings, the handbag design includes solid geometric emotions expressed. Second, the first theme, 'Authentic Value' suggests a new form applied alongside the striped series of Frank Stellar's paintings, differentiated from the typical-patterned bags. It also uses imagery from geometric, modern, and heavy-footed design. Third, the second theme, 'Formative Utopia' expresses bright, active emotions by applying both color variation and asymmetry shown in the series of irregular polygons featured by Frank Stellar's flat paintings. Fourth, a material such as polyurethane must be used in the manufacturing process; this material does not limit the size of bag when it compared with materials such as natural leather. Modern materials such as polyurethane also make the whole process far more economical. Follow-up studies relevant to handbag design have the potential to become deeper and more systemic; I hope that by exploring and applying various design motives, new goods reflected with seasonal emotional images can be suggested in various ways. Picture images are applied can be more designs, and this is a field that has a wealth of untapped potential. I also hope that handbag designers increase their usage of alternative materials such as mixed vegan leather. Such materials have immense social value and significance, and adds more to artistic sensitivity with unique concepts and identities. Non-traditional materials have the potential to usher in new fashion trends which appeal to the evolving and growing market.
