Abstract
User experience is key in deciding the success or failure in a market, thus the design for digital medial interface, in which embodies the delivery of user experience, is growing in importance. As the new flexible display illustrates properties of physically changing forms, in an interface that uses flexible display, form is an important element of user experience design. The purpose of this study is to empirically demonstrate the relationship between form factors and user experience by establishing the form factors for flexible display and deducting the perceived user experience in flexible display interface. For these purposes, the study was conducted as follows. First, the study established form factors of flexible display, which demonstrates physical change of forms as a result of input and output, unlike the previous flat display. The form factors were established based on literature reviews about previous designs and flexible display implemented interfaces, and they can be organized into 6 types: Shape, Flexibility, Size, Multi-Surface, Texture, and Transparency. Moreover, the level of form factors are expected to affect user experience, and form factor values were established by quoting the level considered inducing change in the purpose of use and the experience of use from previous flexible display interface studies along with precedents. Shape is divided into 8 factor values based on the geometric primitive. Flexibility is divided into 5 factor values based on the Rbending value. Size is divided into 4 factor values based on the spatial distance between users. Multi-Surface is divided into 5 factor values based on the number of the divide surfaces and their continuity. Texture is divided into 3 factor values based on the tactility and visuality. Lastly, transparency is divided into 3 factor values based on the clarity of object through the display. Second, since user experience can alter what is perceived according to the characteristics of the interface, the study attempted to deduct perceived user experience in flexible display interface. In a literature review and interview research about digital media and flexible display interface, 52 items that represent user experience were collected, and through a survey including 308 people and a factor analysis it investigated the different types of user experience. The results were used to deduce 10 types of user experience types as functionality, understandability, pleasure, convenience, familiarity, stimulation, adaptability, collectivity, reality, and aesthetic. Third, in order to understand what kind of user experience users actually sense in terms of form factors as established in the first research, positive research was conducted to measure the user experience types to each level of form factor values. The study investigates the significance of shape through one-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance), which checks if there are any variations in user experience relative to form factor values, and deduces the relationship model between form factors and user experience through univariate GLM (General Linear Model), which verifies the influence and significance of form factor values on user experience. Relation models are suggested based on types of user experience and the results have been organized as follows. 1) Within the functionality type cylindrical shape, rollable flexibility, micro size, 2 seamless surfaces, and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas complex-sided shape, unbendable flexibility, large size, 2 discontinuous surfaces, no texture, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. 2) Within the understandability type planar shape, texture of sight and touch, and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas complex-sided shape, no texture, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. 3) Within the pleasure type planar shape, cylindrical shape, curve-sided shape, straight-sided shape, rollable flexibility, foldable flexibility, micro size, small size, 2 seamless surfaces, and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas multi-sided shape, spherical shape, complex-sided shape, unbendable flexibility, stretchable flexibility, large size, medium size, 2 discontinuous surfaces, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. 4) Within the convenience type planar shape, cylindrical shape, curve-sided shape, straight-sided shape, rollable flexibility, foldable flexibility, micro size, small size, 2 seamless surfaces, and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas multi-sided shape, spherical shape, complex-sided shape, unbendable flexibility, stretchable flexibility, large size, medium size, 2 discontinuous surfaces, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. 5) Within the familiarity type planar shape, foldable flexibility, single surface, texture of sight and touch appear to have positive effects whereas complex-sided shape, complex shape, more than 2 discontinuous surfaces, no texture, and visual texture have relatively negative effects. 6) Within the stimulation type complex 3D shape, 2 seamless surfaces, more than 2 seamless surfaces, texture of sight and touch, visual texture, tactile texture, and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas planar shape, straight-sided shape, unbendable flexibility, 2 discontinuous surfaces, more than 2 discontinuous surfaces, no texture, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. 7) Within the adaptability type planar shape, 2 seamless surfaces and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas complex-sided shape, more than 2 discontinuous surfaces, no texture, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. 8) Within the collectivity type spherical shape, cylindrical shape, planar shape, bendable flexibility, large size, medium size, and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas complex-sided shape, unbendable flexibility, micro size, small size, single surface, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. 9) Within the reality type texture of sight and touch and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas complex-sided shape, multi-sided shape, unbendable flexibility, no texture, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. 10) Within the aesthetic type spherical shape, large size, 2 seamless surfaces, and transparency appear to have positive effects whereas planar shape, medium size, 2 discontinuous surfaces, more than 2 discontinuous surfaces, no texture, and no transparency have relatively negative effects. The overall relationship between form factors and user experience shows that in the case of shape factor, convenience was the most effective user experience type followed by pleasure and collectivity. In the case of flexibility factor, convenience was the most effective user experience followed by functionality, pleasure, and collectivity. In the case of size, convenience and collectivity were the most effective user experience types followed by aesthetic. In the case of multi-surface, pleasure, stimulation, aesthetic were the most effective user experience types followed by functionality, convenience, familiarity, and adaptability. In the case of texture, stimulation was the most effective user experience type followed by pleasure, familiarity, and aesthetic. Lastly, in the case of transparency, pleasure was the most effective user experience type and every other type except for familiarity seemed to positively affect user experience type. This study carries multiple significances. First, as we enter an era of paradigm shift from a flat display interface to an interface that takes on physical change of forms, the study highlights the importance of physical form as one of the attributes of flexible display interface. Particularly, the study comprehends form as a means of delivering the meaning of user experience and intends to apply it to user experience design. The suggested values, which illustrate the difference in user experience and the form factors established from literature review over the past 10 years on flexible display interface, can be utilized as design factors in the field of flexible display interface design that is yet in its elementary stage. Second, the study discovers user experience types through conducting empirical research and by collecting expected user experiences without previous sufficient research focused on user experience for flexible display interface. The types drawn from this study could be used to suggest an objective in designing flexible display interface, to help brainstorm new ideas, and to provide an evaluation guideline, thus serving as a pointer in the overall process of user experience design. Third, the suggestive model demonstrating the relationship between form factors and user experience is empirical information about user experience factors in flexible display form, which can be used as a guideline for designers working in a flexible display interface to understand which form factors are accessible when designing specific experiences the user expects. Moreover, such guideline needs continuous research as flexible display interface expands in the market, and this study is significant in that it proposes an indicator for a comprehensive and objective frame for further research.;사용자경험은 시장에서의 성패를 좌우하게 하는 핵심요인으로써, 사용자경험을 전달하는 접점인 인터페이스에 대한 디자인의 중요성이 더욱 커지고 있다.
