Abstract
This study investigates the lekking behavior of the Japanese treefrog, Hyla japonica, which occurs predominantly in man-made rice paddies for the production of advertisement calls and pair formation in Republic of Korea. Specifically, this study tests whether H. japonica forms leks and suggests the most accurate lek hypotheses by following the dynamics of leks. I hypothesized that H. japonica is a lekking species and that the dynamics are influenced by environmental and habitat factors. We tested this hypothesis by surveying the occurrence of H. japonica in each paddy, environmental and habitat variables. According to the definition of leks by Höglund and Alatalo (2014), the most undisputed and cover a wide range of taxa, a lek is an aggregation of males for display that females attend primarily for the purpose of fertilization. We applied this definition to H. japonica and it determined as a lek mating system. There were both seasonal variation and the variation between leks for H. japonica. During the mating season, the dynamics followed the mean water index, specifically the initiation of the lekking behavior was strongly affected by the water index. The full-chorus period was also related to the mean water index difference between periods. Since the water index is a factor of the irrigation timing and the continuity of farming, the human factor may affect the mating system of breeders in the rice paddy, H. japonica. Also, the seasonal dynamics matched with female attendance to leks and indicated males as a prediction factor for female appearance or the effect of seasonal variation due to the water index. For the dynamics between leks, the irrigation system also affected the shift of dominant leks between periods based on the full-chorus, related to the water index difference. Other agricultural methods such as plant height on banks, herbicide, and mowing were not correlated with the dynamics between leks. The water index leads to the different degrees of density in leks and the shift of dominant leks, although, sites of high female density were not related with the water index. Instead, sites of high female density were determined by the male density and the distance to the forest. This dynamics between leks suggested the possibility of an environmental hotspot model. Despite the match between male lek and sites of high female density, the mating probability per individual in dense leks did not increase through the increase in male density. This regression rejected the female preference model for the lekking behavior of H. japonica. Since there is high possibility that satellite males affect the non-increasing mating probability per individual in dense leks, the hotshot model is expected here as well. Further study is needed to determine the most suitable model for the lekking behavior of H. japonica. Especially, the individual tracking of males and the specific information on the exact location used by each male, supported by experimental data to provide the lekking model of H. japonica.;청개구리 수컷은 번식기에 습지에 모여 암컷을 유혹하는 광고노래를 하며 번식행동을 하며, 한국에서는 주로 논을 번식장소로 이용한다.
