Abstract
As voice onset time (VOT) has widely been known for a distinctive acoustic property to characterize plosive consonants, researchers have been investigating factors that diversify VOT. It has been reported that numerous factors are related to VOT such as place of articulation, speaker gender, following vowel height, age, language experience, speaking rate and so on. Nevertheless, few studies have examined how significant lexical stress is on the production of VOT. Thus, this study aimed to determine if VOT is affected by word stress. Specifically, this research seeks to answer whether VOTs vary according to the degree of lexical stress, mainly when syllables have primary stress, secondary stress, or non-stress. An experiment was designed to determine the effect of word stress on VOT. Of particular interest was how Korean learners of English realize English word-initial plosives given the varying degree of word stress. Thus, this experiment involved 20 Korean learners of English and 10 English native speakers for the baseline of the comparison. Considering that the learners’ production differ according to their language experience, this study divided the learners into two different groups on the basis of their proficiency levels in English. The first group consisted of 10 learners who had lived in an English-speaking country no more than six months, and the other group was 10 learners whose length of residence in English-speaking countries was over five years. The total 30 participants produced 36 target words. The target words started with English voiceless plosives and the following vowels was primarily stressed, secondarily stressed, or unstressed. This study found that VOT varied according to the degree of lexical stress. Also, the more proficient learners of English produced closer VOT values to the English native speakers. The result showed that learners’ linguistic experience plays an important role in L2 speech. Particularly, the experienced learners were able to differentiate the VOT according to the degree of word stress.;성대진동구간(VOT)은 파열음의 특징을 파악하는 데 있어 중요한 음향적 특징으로 알려져 왔다.
