Abstract
In Korean, there is a phonological pattern that changes stops into nasal consonants when the speaker is producing words that contain stops and nasal consonants in a sequence. For example, when a speaker produces “국민”(/kuk min/) /k m/ sounds [ŋ m]. This kind of nasal assimilation is used in Korean, but it does not exist in English. This thesis observed if Korean speakers apply their phonological system when they speak English words that include a stop and a nasal consonant that are next to each other. In the case above, there was a study to see if the articulation applying could be improved by audition-articulation training, as well as, how this training could be a model based on phonology and phonetics such as in the optimality theory or exemplar-based models. There was an articulation experiment done with English learners whose native language is Korean and native English speakers. Sentences with a specific pair of words in a sequence were used in the experiment. The coda of the preceding syllable was a stop and the onset of the following syllable was a nasal consonant. While the subjects were reading the sentences it was observed and analyzed if the spectrogram showed any nasal pattern formed in the part with the stop. For two weeks after the pre-experiment the English learners had practiced listening and speaking the sentences that were spoken by the native English speakers. After two weeks the post-experiment was administered in the same way as the pre-experiment. Through a comparison and analysis of the results of both the pre- and post-experiments it would be observed whether audition-articulation training would influence the English learners’ articulation abilities. The pre-experiment results showed that the learners applied their own phonological system into their English. There was no nasal assimilation with the native English speakers, but there was a high frequency of it in the English learners’ data. When analyzing the results of the post-experiment, significant statistical difference was found in the frequency of nasal assimilation from the learner group. In other words, the frequency of nasal assimilation was reduced in the post-experiment compared to the results of the pre-experiment. There was no significant difference between the English learners and the native English speakers in the frequency of nasal assimilation in the post-experiment. Audition-articulation training can improve the state of the learners’ speaking ability that is caused by their own language phonological system. This can be a good model for an exemplar-based theory that emphasizes the effect of experience in the formation of the phonological category. By repeating the words phonological category for the target language can be gradually developed and the learners can achieve a similar articulation as native English speakers.
