Abstract
The purpose of this Portfolio is to use fairy tales to teach English and encourage Young Learners (YLs) to write in Korean EFL classrooms. Students are given opportunities to read their favourite childhood stories outside of the classroom and write various genres of writing in the classroom. Using fairy tales with YLs will not only engage their interest, but also motivate them to interact with each other along with the storyline. The target audience is a group of ten YLs whose ages are from seven to eight in an English academy in Korea. According to the WIDA scale, their overall language proficiency is Level 3 Developing. Thus, in terms of reading and writing, students are beginning to identify topic sentences and produce short paragraphs with main ideas and supporting details. They are exposed to text types such as letters, newspapers and advertisements. They have been studying English in a communicative way with native English speakers for four hours a week for at least a year. In terms of listening and speaking, they can follow spoken directions and recount short stories or events. Some of them have attended English Kindergartens and their listening and speaking proficiency is better than their reading and writing proficiency.
