토마스 하트 벤튼 (Thomas Hart Benton)의 작품에 나타난 사회 의식 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 토마스 하트 벤튼(Thomas Hart Benton, 1889-1975)의 작품에 나타난 사회의식에 관한 연구이다. 벤튼은 미국의 시대상황과 변화에 주목하고 다양한 작품에서 작가의 목소리를 표출하였다. 벤튼에 대한 기존의 연구들은 주로 1930년대 시기 작품에만 한정되어 있었으며, 벽화와 지역의 풍경을 그린 작품에 집중되어 있었다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 벤튼의 생애 전반에 걸친 작품을 살펴보고 그의 작품을 다각적인 관점에서 분석하여 벤튼이 사회에 대한 메시지를 어떻게 작품을 통해 드러내고 있는지 확인하고자 한다. 벤튼의 사회의식은 당대 미국의 정치사회적 상황과 미국 미술계의 리얼리스트적 경향과 맞물리면서 구체적인 모습으로 전개되었다. 벤튼은 미국의 근대화, 양차 세계대전, 대 공황과 같은 경제적 부흥기과 암흑기를 고루 경험하면서 미국 사회에 대한 다각적인 시각을 갖게 되었으며, 다양한 소재들을 통해 자신의 발언을 작품에 내포시켰다. 뿐만 아니라 벤튼은 미국사회가 마주한 현실, 미국적인 소재를 작품에 반영하고자 했던 미술가들과 그 흐름을 공유하면서 리얼리스트적 입장을 가지게 되었다. 벤튼의 개인사적 배경은 그의 사회의식을 형성하는데 밑바탕이 되었다. 아버지의 정치이념과 그 영향, 사회주의가로서의 활동, 미국 곳곳을 여행하면서 그가 직접 목격한 모습은 작품의 주요 소재가 되어 구체화 되었다. 이는 순조롭게 진행되고 있는 미국의 근대화를 의미하기도 하고, 부정부패가 가득한 도시모습으로 표현되었다. 먼저 벤튼은 1920년대 초 고층빌딩과 자동차, 산업사회로 변모해 가는 도시의 모습을 통해 근대화된 미국의 긍정적인 에너지를 재현하였다. 그러나 그는 점차 미국 산업사회가 지닌 부정적인 면모를 작품에 드러내며 산업화 과정에서 수반되는 문제점들을 환기시켰다. 또한 벤튼은 자본주의 사회구조에 주목하며, 성이 상품화되는 사회와 불법이 자행되는 도시의 사회문제에 대한 비판의식을 드러내기도 하였다. 그리고 노예해방 선언 이후에도 개선되지 않았던 인종문제에 관심을 가진 벤튼은 흑인 노동자들의 모습을 열악하고 거친 현실 속 인물로 묘사하여 인종차별로 인한 사회의 부조리를 비판하였다. 마지막으로 벤튼은 2차 세계대전이라는 주제를 사실적으로 표현하여 전쟁의 공포에 대한 경각심을 일깨워주고자 했으며, 실제의 인물을 그로테스크하게 재현함으로써 전쟁으로 인해 망가지고 파괴된 인간의 모습에 관한 비판적인 시각을 표출했다. 벤튼은 이처럼 그가 직접 경험하고 바라 본 미국의 모습을 사실적으로 묘사함으로써, 사회에 대한 문제를 관람자들에게 인식시키고자 하였다. 본 연구는 벤튼이 단순히 미국사회의 현실을 재현한 것이 아니라 이러한 관심을 기반으로 미국의 현실에 대해 끊임없이 질문하고 답하고자 했으며 이를 통해 리얼리스트적인 면모가 드러났음을 확인할 수 있었다. 벤튼의 이러한 태도는 사회 구성원으로서 자신이 속한 사회가 당면한 문제와 변화에 관심을 가지고 이를 예술을 통해 공유하고 토로하고자 한 것이었다. 개인적인 경험으로부터 비롯된 벤튼의 사회의식은 생애 전반에 걸쳐 지속적으로 나타났고, 조형적인 태도이자 작가의 예술관으로 승화되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.; This study examines the social consciousness appeared in the works of Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975). Benton was a realist, who focused on the contemporary state and change in the United States, expressed his perspectives in various works. Existing studies on Benton have been only limited to his works in 1930s, particularly murals and the paintings of the scenes in certain regions. This study, on the other hand, looks into the works throughout Benton’s life and analyzes his works in diverse perspectives in order to confirm how Benton revealed his messages to the society in his works. Benton’s social consciousness was manifested in a specific form as the sociopolitical state on the contemporary United States overlapped with the realistic tendency of the American art circle of his time. As the US passed through economic development and recession including the modernization, World War I and II, and the Great Depression, Benton developed diverse perspectives on the American society, and revealed his comments in his works through various subjects. In addition, by sharing the flow with fellow artists who aimed to reflect the reality which the American society was facing along with the subjects that were very American in their works in order to realize the goal of creating art which relates to lives, Benton gradually formed realistic stance. The background of Benton’s private life served as the foundation for his social consciousness. His father’s political belief and its impact, his activities as a socialist and the scenes he witnessed while travelling various parts of the United States became the main subjects for his works and were specified. Some subjects referred to the modernization of the United States which had been going on in a favorable state, some were revealed in a form of city filled with corruption and illegalities, and some were displayed in a critical perspective toward the reality which the United States were facing. First, Benton reproduced the optimistic energies of the modernized United States through the scenes of high-rise buildings, vehicles, and a city converting into an industrial society in early 1920’s. However, he gradually called attention to the problems involved in the industrialization process by showing the negative aspects of the industrial society of the United States. Also, Benton paid attention to the problems created in the capitalistic social structure, revealing critical perspectives toward the social problems in a society where sex is commercialized and a city where illegalities are carried out. Moreover, he noted racial issues which had not been improved even after the Emancipation Proclamation, and described the state of African American workers in a poor and rough reality in order to criticize the absurdity of the society. Lastly, he depicted the issue of World War II in a realistic way without any adjustments, thereby raising awareness for the fear of war, and reproduced the figures of actual persons in a grotesque way in order to reveal critical viewpoint toward the state of humans destroyed and destructed by war. As such, Benton depicted the state of United States that he personally experienced and witnessed in a realistic way in order to raise awareness of the viewers for the issues regarding the society. In this study, it was found that Benton not only simply reproduced the reality of American society, but also, based on such interest, tried to constantly raise questions regarding the reality of the United States and give answers to them. In this way, his realistic aspect could be captured. Such attitude of Benton was aimed to let people, as members of the society, have interest in the issues and changes of the society where they belongs to, and to share and vent such interest through art. The social consciousness of Benton, which had resulted from his personal experiences, were constantly revealed throughout his lifetime, and was also elevated into his figurative feature as well as his artistic viewpoints.
