Optical phenomena such as transmission, reflection, and refraction are described in terms of refractive index of optical medium. Metamaterial is a class of optical medium where the effective refractive index can be manipulated by resonances design in subwavelength sized meta-atom. Optical response of meta-atom is determined by the size and shape of meta-structure and it is possible to control optical phenomena by designing resonances of meta-atom. We adopt double-split ring resonator, rod resonator, and V-shaped antenna aperture as meta-atom to study how optical phenomena can be controlled by meta-resonance design. Metamaterial resonances design provides several important examples of optical phenomena control, which include energy-transfer between superradiant modes through Fano resonance, polarization-dependent resonant metastructure as frequency selective surface, a phase-gradient metasurface to provide a tangential momentum, and optical spin Hall effect via an enhanced spin-orbit coupling. Basic concepts such as Fano resonance, Babinet principle, Berry curvature, and form-invariance of physics law are explored in explaining optical phenomena observed in metamaterials composed of the above-mentioned meta-atoms. In particular, it is shown that a Fano resonance takes place even when both super- and sub-radiant modes are externally driven. Negative metamaterial composed of meta-atom apertures exhibits a complementary meta-resonances, advantageous in constructing liquid crystal metamaterial cell for electro-optic modulation. Analysis of optical spin Hall effect in terms of momentum-space Lorentz equation of motion allows an expression of transverse beam-shift in terms of phase-gradient metamaterial. Transformation optics scheme is employed to broaden the understanding of anomalous refraction in V-shaped antenna aperture metamaterial. As an application of metamaterial to photonic device, a liquid crystal cell incorporating metamaterial is fabricated to demonstrate electro-optic control of reflection and refraction. The capability of metamaterial resonances design renders nano-sized metamaterial a rich near-IR optical material. That is, nano-sized metamaterials provide a platform for new photonic device architectures for spatial light modulation, wave division multiplexer or demultiplexer, high sensitivity detection, and precise nano-metrology in a broadband near-IR spectral range.;반사, 투과, 굴절과 같은 다양한 광학현상은 광학매질의 굴절률에 의해 지배된다.
