(Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2003). One of core abilities in the society of knowledge and information is problem solving ability, which is the ability to solve various problems based on higher and critical thinking. Problem solving ability is the highest intellectual capacity and can be developed through intentional education(Cho, 2001a; 2001b). One of intentional education is problem solving learning. It is helpful for students to improve their problem solving ability by developing critical thinking during problem solving process which consists of identifying the problem, searching solutions and selecting the best solution on their own(Park & Kwon, 2004; Duffield, 1991). Problem solving learning minimizes the teacher’s directions and instructions and forms the student’s concepts or solutions by presenting tasks and discussions based on the learner’s thinking(Savery & Duffy, 1995). Problme solving learning is learner-centered learning and it requires self-directed learning ability and collaborative learning ability(Duch, Groh, & Allen, 2001). When the problem solving learning is presented through the web, problem solvers can share and exchange various data and information required for problem solving, communicate with co-learners and experts, and construct collaborative learning and new knowledge by sharing concepts and information mutually(Kang, Lee, Kim, & Lee, 1999). Given the characteristics of the problems presented in web-based ill-structured problem solving learning, learners are required to have not only domain and structural knowledge as background knowledge for problem solving, but also metacognitive knowledge for planning and knowing which domain knowledge to use and how (Belland, Glazewski, & Richardson, 2008), and if learners are lacking in the domain-specific knowledge or metacognitive knowledge, they have difficulty in solving problems(Song & Shin, 2010). Choi(1999) reported that learners may lose their way in web-based ill-structural problem solving learning because a large volume of learning contents and various learning activities are presented all once, and are unable to receive proper guidance about learning contents and learning activities because of the physical distance between instructors and learners. If learners are lacking in prior knowledge or self-directed learning ability, they have difficulty in participating in learning actively and voluntarily(Lee & Cho, 2005). One of the supportive strategies for decreasing these difficulties is scaffolding(Jeon, 2007; Bulu & Pederson, 2010; Ge & Land, 2003). Scaffolding is the support that the expert gives to help the learner achieve things that they have trouble in achieving alone(Wood, Bruner, & Ross, 1976). Recently with the introduction of web-based learning, the meaning of scaffolding has expanded to include various instruments, strategies, guides and sources to help learners(Brush & Saye, 2001; Hannafin, Land, & Oliver, 1999). In the first stage, the research concerned with the effects of scaffolding on learning focused on the effects of scaffolding itself(Brown & Palincsar, 1987). But recently the research on the comparative advantage of various scaffolding types(Ge &Land, 2003) and research on interaction effects between scaffolding types and learner’s characteristics(Jeon, 2007) were conducted, and the scope of dependent valuables on scaffolding research are expanding from achievement, problem solving ability and learning attitude to learning participation(Yang, Heo, & Kim, 2014), presence(Gasević, Adesope, Joksimović, & Kovanović, 2015). Presence, which refers to the feeling that learners are in the learning process, is considered an important variable in web-based learning. Presence consists of cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence(Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2003). Cognitive presence is increased through exploring solutions with a critical reflection on oneself in the problem solving process(Garrison & Arbaugh, 2007), as well as scaffolding associated with meticognition(Gasević et al., 2015). Meanwhile, one of considerations in an ill-structured problem solving environment is evaluation. Choi(1999) said that the evaluation in web-based problem solving learning should include both the learning process and learning outcomes. Jonassen(2004) presented three proper forms of assessing of problem solving skills, which are assessing students’ problem solving performance, assessing the component and cognitive skills required to solve problems, and assessing students’ ability to construct arguments in support of their solutions to problems. He recommended these assessments not be used separately but all together in harmony. Many studies have reported that scaffolding improves problem solving ability and has positive effects on achievement, but have not presented consistent research results on which scaffolding type is more effective(Kim, Lee, & Lim, 2014; Simons & Klein, 2007). Thereisfewresearchthatconsiderslearners’ characteristics interacting with the learning environment and scaffolding. Also, much of research associated with presence mainly focused on the effects of cognitive presence on learning effectiveness and achievement, and the method of increasing cognitive presence. So, there is very limited research on strategies facilitating presence that take into account scaffolding, a typical strategy supporting learners in web-based instruction, or relevance to the learners’ characteristic of metacognition. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the comparative advantage effects of scaffolding types which is needed to comprehensively facilitate components of presence and the relevance to learners’ metacognitive levels. Evaluation in problem solving learning varies by researchers(Ge, 2001; Cho, 2001; Kuo, Chen, and Hwang, 2014), but in most cases, the subject of evaluation is the final product or the individual report or observation of the learner’s behavior in the problem solving process. But, evaluation in problem solving has to be conducted with consideration to the learning process and learning outcomes because the evaluation in problem solving should be concerned with both the learning process and learning outcomes(Choi, 1999; Jonassen, 2004; Lee, 1978). Learning outcomes may differ depending on how effectively difficulties that the learners faced were reduced. In other words, there is a close correlation between scaffolding presented as a supportive strategy for learners and problem solving performance and achievement of learning outcomes. Thus, it is necessary to identify the effects of scaffolding types on problem solving performance and achievement from the aspects of the problem solving process and problem solving product. The purpose of this study was to identify how scaffolding types and the levels of meticognition affected presence, achievement, and problem solving ability in web-based problem solving learning. The research questions of this study were proposed as follows: 1. Do scaffolding types and the levels of metacognition affect presence? 1-1. Are there any differences in presence(cognitive, social, teaching) according to scaffolding types(supportive, reflective)? 1-2. Is there any interaction effect between scaffolding types(supportive, reflective) and the levels of metacognition(high, low) in presence(cognitive, social, teaching)? 2. Do scaffolding types and the levels of metacognition affect problem solving performance? 2-1. Are there any differences in problem solving performance(problem representation, solution exploration, selecting a solution with argument and justification, monitoring and evaluation, creating the final solution) according to scaffolding types(supportive, reflective)? 2-2. Is there any interaction effect between scaffolding types(supportive, reflective) and the levels of metacognition(high, low) in problem solving ability(problem representation, solution exploration, selecting a solution with argument and justification, monitoring and evaluation, creating the final solution)? 3. Do scaffolding types and the levesl of metacognition affect achievement? 3-1. Are there any differences in achievement according to scaffolding types(supportive, reflective)? 3-2. Is there any interaction effect between scaffolding types(supportive, reflective) and the level of metacognition(high, low) in achievement? In this study independent variables were scaffolding types(supportive, reflective) and the levels of metacognition, and dependent variables were presence, problem solving performance, and achievement. scaffolding types were supportive scaffolding and reflective scaffolding which were reclassified as scaffolding types usable in online learning environments by Cagiltay(2006) and associated with learners’ difficulties in problem solving learning. Supportive scaffolding gave learners help on conceptual, cognitive, domain knowledge required to solve problems and was presented as the form of explanations, conceptual questions, visual materials, and templates. Supportive scaffolding gave learners help on strategies and processes required to solve problems without specific learning contents and was presented as the form of exploratory questions, hints, expert models, problem solving process map. Presence consisted of cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence proposed by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer(1999). Problem solving performance was the sum of personal report scores on learners’ behaviors and arguments, justification in problem solving process and final common solution score. Achievement means component skills which assess cognitive skills required to solve problems. Achievement included only cognitive domain and test items were extracted from previous teacher recruitment examinations. The test items went for knowledge and application in Bloom’s taxonomy of education. MANOVA and ANCOVA were used to investigate the effects of scaffolding types and levels of metacognition on presence, problem solving performance and achievement. The results of this study were as follows: 1. There were differences in presence according to scaffolding type. Cognitive presence and social presence were higher in the reflective scaffolding group than in the supportive scaffolding group and the interaction effect between scaffolding types and the levels of metacognition was identified in teaching presence. 2. There were differences in problem solving performance according to scaffolding types. Problem solving performance in the reflective scaffolding group was higher than that in the supportive scaffolding group on problem representation, monitoring and evaluation. But, the interaction effect between scaffolding types and the levels of metacognition was not identified in problem solving performance. 3. There were differences in achievement according to scaffolding type. Students’ achievement in the reflective scaffolding group was higher than that in the supportive scaffolding group and the interaction effect between scaffolding types and the level of metacognition was identified in achievement. Conclusions and implications from the results of this study were as follows: 1. Reflective scaffolding was more effective than supportive scaffolding in facilitating cognitive presence and social presence in web-based ill-structured problem solving learning. But supportive scaffolding was more effective than reflective scaffolding in facilitating teaching presence in web-based ill-structured problem solving learning. When considering the levels of metcognition, supportive scaffoldings should be presented to low metacognition level students and reflective scaffoldings should be presented to high metacognition level students to facilitate teaching presence more effectively. 2. To facilitate problem solving performance in web-based ill-structured problem solving learning, reflective scaffolding was more effective than supportive scaffolding for problem representation, monitoring and evaluation. However, there was no interaction effect between scaffolding types and the levels of metacognition. The cause of this result was because participation in this experiment was optional, the teams consisted of various school years and majors, and problem solving performance was measured by new method. 3. To increase achievement in web-based ill-structured problem solving learning, reflective scaffolding was more effective than supportive scaffolding regardless of metacognition level. The difference between the score in supportive scaffolding and the score in reflective scaffolding was higher in the high metacognition level group than low metacognition level group. When considering only scaffolding types regardless of metacognition level, reflective scaffolding is more effective, and for high metacognition level students, reflective scaffolding was more effective than supportive scaffolding. For future studies several research issues are suggested: 1. Collaborative problem solving learning features collective activity processes such as discussions to attain a common goal, access problems and solve problems with co-workers. These features are different from that of personal problem solving learning. Therefore, in the future there will need to be study on which scaffolding is more effective to support presence enhancement in web-based collaborative problem solving learning. 2. Recently, it is discussed that the constructs of metacognition are knowledge of cognition, monitor of cognition and regulation of cognition. Regulation of cognition consists of self-regulation and shared regulation(or co-regulation). So, in the future the research on the interaction effect between scaffolding types and the level of metacognition based on new constructs of metacognition will have to be carried out. 3. Considering that problem solving consists of the problem solving process and product, and learners’ performance in problem solving learning should be concerned with both the process and product(Elliott, 1994; Lee, 1978; Jonassen, 2004), going forward, problems solving performance should be assessed in terms of both the process and product. It is necessary to identify which supportive strategies facilitate problem solving performance and the comparative advantage effects of supportive strategies. 4. One of original attributes of scaffolding is to gradually remove as learners attain abilities. Thus, in the future research reflecting the original attribute of scaffolding should be carried out. 5. In numerous cases the scaffolding presented in web-based learning environments was hard scaffolding which instructional designers had anticipated, designed and presented in advance. But it is difficult for instructional designers to anticipate all of learners’ difficulties. In the future it is necessary to develop adaptive scaffolding which presented according to learners’ response and the effect of adaptive scaffolding. 6. Web-based learning is learner-centered learning environment and requires self-directed learning ability, collaborative learning ability. Therefore, in the future research should be carried out on how to facilitate learners’ self-directed learning ability and collaborative learning ability.-
