Abstract
This study tried to analyze the thinking pattern demanded by the unit for ‘composition of material’ and the unit for ‘characteristic of material’ as the sections related to chemistry in Science② for the 2009 revised science curriculum with a classification scheme of the evaluation-question thinking pattern suggested by Lawson. Also, a comparative analysis was made with the cognitive demand level of evaluation questions in the textbook by surveying the cognitive development level in the 2nd grade middle school students with the use of SRT, which is the thinking pattern test proposed by Lawson. Summarizing the results of this study, they are as follows. First, as a result of adding item number in the unit for ‘composition of material’and the unit for ‘characteristic of material’ averagely 80.9 questions were set. The textbooks that presented more than number of ‘average questions’ includes textbooks A, B, C, F, G. The textbooks that did set less than it include textbooks D, E, H, I. There was even a textbook that is possessed a large proportion by a simple-memory question in the form of filling in the blanks even if being large in item number. There was a textbook, too, that was presented the questions of demanding diverse thinking skills even if being very small in the whole item number. Second, in the ‘textual item’ for the ‘composition of material’unit, the number in ‘average questions’ about ‘only the Recall of Specific Facts(R)’, ‘Empirical-Inductive Thinking Pattern(EI)’, and ‘Hypothetical-Deductive Thinking Pattern(HD)’ stood at 14.3 pieces(58.4%), 3.9 pieces(15.8%), and 6.3 pieces(25.8%), respectively. In the ‘finishing item’, it amounted to 7.0 pieces(41.5%), 2.3 pieces(13.8%), 7.6 pieces(44.7%), respectively. As for the thinking pattern demanded by the evaluation questions about the unit for ‘characteristic of material’, the number of ‘average questions’about ‘R’, ‘EI’, and ‘HD’ in the ‘textual item’ came to 11.6 pieces(46.2%), 6.0 pieces(24.0%), 7.4 pieces(29.8%), respectively. In the ‘finishing item’, it reached 2.7 pieces(18.5%), 3.1 pieces(22.3%), 8.6 pieces(59.2%) in regular order. Both the unit for ‘composition of material’ and the unit for ‘characteristic of material’ have many questions of confirming simple terminology or concept in the ‘textual item', thereby having been high in the ratio of ‘R’. The ‘finishing item’ asked generally about a concept of having been learnt in the unit more than the ‘textual item’and has many questions of requiring the higher problem solving ability. Thus, the item number for ‘HD’ increased. Third, the cognitive-demand sub-elements for Lawson's evaluation questions, which were shown in the ‘composition of material’ unit of all the 9-type textbooks, included ‘R’ and ‘understanding and applying a theoretical concept(HD1).’ The element for ‘classifying those that were observed(EI1)’ wasn't existent in all the textbooks. In the unit for ‘composition of material’, there were many questions of confirming a concept of the ‘textual item’. Thus, ‘R’ was presented the most. The next was much found ‘HD1’ that understands and applies a theoretical concept. In the unit for ‘composition of material’, the textbooks A and E were set the maximum 8 sub-elements. The textbook F was taken the minimum 4 sub-elements. In the unit for ‘characteristic of material’, the questions such as ‘R’, ‘applying arithmetic operation or formula of being memorized(EI5)’, and ‘understanding and applying a theoretical concept(HD1)’ were involved in all the 9-type textbooks. In term of the diversity in thinking pattern, the textbooks D, E, F were most various including 8 sub-elements. The textbook with the lowest was textbook G that has 4 sub-elements. The evaluation questions need to assess the understanding about a descriptive and theoretical concept as well as specific knowledge and to be possibly developed a thinking type. Hence, a teacher needs to present it to students by referring to the questions of requiring different thinking pattern in addition to the textbook of being used now. Fourth, as a result of surveying the thinking pattern of the 2nd grade middle school students, ‘Empirical-Inductive Thinking Pattern’, ‘Transitional thinking pattern’, and ‘Hypothetical-Deductive Thinking Pattern’ stood at 176 people(70.1%), 54 people(21.5%), and 21 people(8.4%), respectively. Also, a previous research led to coming to know that most of the 2nd grade middle school students failed to reach ‘Hypothetical-Deductive Thinking Pattern’. As a result of totaling the ‘textual item’ and the ‘finishing item’ for 9 kinds of textbooks, in case of the unit for ‘composition of material’, ‘HD’ possessed from 21.3% at the minimum up to 46.4% at the maximum. In case of the unit for ‘characteristic of material’, the distribution was shown from minimally 25.0% to maximally 55.6%. Given a comparison between the thinking pattern in the 2nd grade middle school students who were surveyed now and the thinking pattern of the evaluation questions about the textbook, the textbook-evaluation cognitive-demand level tends to be considerably high. Excluding 8.4% of the students who reached ‘Hypothetical-Deductive Thinking Pattern’, the remaining students seem to likely suffer a great difficulty in understanding and solving ‘finishing item' themselves in most textbooks. Accordingly, a teacher will need to suggest a problem in line with students' cognitive development level by recognizing a difference between the students' cognitive development level and the evaluation-question cognitive-demand level.
