19세기 여성작곡가 세실 샤미나드 (CÉCILE CHAMINADE, 1857-1944)의 가곡연구

Abstract

본 논문은 19세기 프랑스 여성작곡가 세실 루이 스테파니 샤미나드(Cécile Loise Stephanie Chaminade, 1857-1944)의 4곡의 가곡 『늘 되풀이하는 말(Ritournelle)』,『은반지(L'Anneau D'Argent)』,『여름밤(Nuit D'Ete)』,『좋은 기분(Bonne Humeur)』에 관한 연구이다. 샤미나드가 활동한 19세기에서 20세기 초에는 남성지배적 관습이 팽배했던 시대적 분위기로 인해 여성작곡가들은 음악활동을 하는 데에 있어 많은 어려움을 겪었다. 이러한 사회적 편견 속에서 그녀는 살롱을 주 활동 무대로 삼으며 대중들에게 자신의 음악을 소개하며 음악가로서의 발판을 힘겹게 마련해 나갔다. 낭만주의시대의 성공한 여성작곡가로 손꼽히는 샤미나드는 400여곡에 이르는 다양한 장르의 작품들을 작곡하고 그녀의 작품 대다수를 인쇄물로 출간하였다. 특히 가곡과 피아노 소품 같은 살롱음악으로 대중들에게 큰 호응을 얻어 그녀에게 부와 인기를 가져다주었고 프랑스 정부로부터 재능과 공헌도를 인정받아 여성작곡가 최초로 레지옹 도뇌르 훈장(Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur)을, 영국 빅토리아 여왕에게는 다이아몬드 주빌리 메달(Diamond Jubilee Medal)을 수여받는 등 명예까지 얻을 수 있었다. 그 명성으로 인해 급증한 인기는 33년간의 영국 정기공연과 미국 연주여행 등 국내외를 가리지 않는 활발한 연주활동을 할 수 있는 원동력이 되었다. 그녀의 가곡은 전형적인 낭만주의 음악 양식을 바탕으로 달콤하고 매력적인 선율이 기본적인 특징이다. 아름답고 섬세한 멜로디 라인은 여성작곡가 특유의 여성성이 드러난다. 또한 단순한 3형식의 간결한 구조와 기억하기 쉬운 멜로디는 아마추어 연주자와 일반 대중들에게 그녀의 음악을 쉽게 받아들일 수 있는 요소로서 인기를 끌기에 충분했다. 화성에서는 반음계적 화성의 빈번한 사용으로 곡의 단조로움을 피하며 풍부한 음색을 표현 하였다. 반주부에서는 한 화음의 구성음들을 동시에 연주하며 화성진행을 하는 코드 패턴의 특징을 보인다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 샤미나드가 활동하던 시기의 음악가가 아닌 여성음악가로서 활동하기에 어떤 제한적인 요소가 있었는지 시대적 상황을 이해하고, 자신만의 이력을 쌓기 위해 끊임없이 노력하던 그녀의 생애를 살펴본 후, 그녀의 가곡에서 나타나는 시대적인 음악흐름과 그녀 작품만의 특징을 알아보았다. 또한 그녀가 국제적인 음악가로서 성공을 이루었던 1908년의 미국연주여행 프로그램에 사용되어진 주요 레퍼토리 중 대중들에게 큰 인기를 얻으며 가장 많이 연주되어진 위의 4곡을 선정하여 시의 내용, 곡의 분위기, 멜로디, 반주, 화성 등의 음악적 표현의 여러 측면에서 분석하였다. 이를 통해 4곡의 특징들을 알아보고 청중들로 하여금 그녀의 음악이 인기를 얻을 수 있었던 요인들을 고찰하여 잘 알려지지 않은 그녀의 가곡에 대한 이해를 높이고 연주자들에게 기초적 자료 제공과 곡을 연주하는 데에 있어 도움이 되기를 바란다. ;This paper is a study on 4 songs of 『Ritournelle』,『L'Anneau D'Argent』,『Nuit D'Ete』,『Bonne Humeur』 composed by Cécile Loise Stephanie Chaminade, (1857-1944). In the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century that Chaminade was active, female composers had a lot of difficulties in musical activities because there was so much male-dominated custom. In these social prejudices, salons were her main center of activity and she struggled to establish a foothold as a musician introducing her music to the public. Chaminade who is a successful female composer in the romantic period composed various genres of more than 400 works and published a majority of them as printed matter. Especially, songs and salon music like piano pieces brought her to wealth and popularity as they appealed very much to the public. And she even gained honor winning Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur for the first time as the female composer from the French government and a Diamond Jubilee Medal from Queen Victoria in the UK as she received recognition in her talent and contributiveness. Her popularity which rapidly increased due to her reputation was the driving force that she could continue to be externally and internally active including regular performances in the UK for 33 years and concert tours to US. Her songs basically feature sweet and attractive melodies based on the typical romantic music form. The beautiful and delicate melody lines show unique femininity of female composers. And the simple structure of three forms and the catchy melodies were enough to be popular as the elements that amateurs and the public can easily accept her music. For harmony, she avoided the simplicity of songs by using chromatic scales frequently and expressed the rich tone. For the accompaniment, she showed the characteristics of the cord pattern that arranged chord progression playing the tones composing a cord simultaneously. This paper examined the musical stream of times shown in her songs and her own works’ characteristics after understanding times and circumstances about the elements which limited her musical activities as a female musician, not the one who was active in the period and checking her life with the ceaseless efforts to build her own career. And it analyzed musical expressions including contents of poems, atmospheres of songs, melodies, accompaniment, chords of the above four songs that have been most popular and played for the public among a major repertoire of songs which had been used in the concert tour program in US in 1908 when she was successful in the musical world as an international musician by selecting them. It is expected to be helpful for increasing understanding about her songs which are not well know to the public, providing the basic data for players, and playing her songs by examining the four songs’ characteristics and considering the factors that made her music popular among the audience.
