Abstract
R. Schumann 「Dichterliebe Op. 48」, F. Chopin 「Polonaise Brillante for Cello and Piano Op. 3」, C. Debussy 「Sonata for Violin and Piano」, The purpose of this thesis is to analyse R. Schumann 「Dichterliebe Op. 48」, F. Chopin 「Polonaise Brillante for Cello and Piano Op. 3」, C. Debussy 「Sonata for Violin and Piano」, my graduation concert repertoires, and study the composers and their other works. Robert Schumann(1810-1856) follows Schubert in successfully creating a new 19th art song form. This thesis explores 「Dichterliebe Op.48」, composed in 1840, which is Schumann’s best-known song cycle. It consists of texts from Lyrisches Intermezzo of Heinrich Heine and each song shows an intimate connection between poetry and music by mirroring Schumann’s interpretation in the piano chromaticism and suspensions. Therefore it is essential for the performer to have better understanding of the poems and how the context are related with melody, rhythm, and chord. Fryderyk Chopin(1810-1849) was a Polish composer and pianist of the Romantic era who later received education in France. Although most of his ideology and sentiment was formed and his work was based on his love and passion for his country. This thesis discusses 「Polonaise Brillante for Cello and Piano Op. 3」 which was composed to be in a moderato triple meter. It seems to extravagantly weigh into the polonaise rhythm but the piano and cello, while exchanging taking parts, creates lyricism and a rather elegant and rich melody. Claude Debussy(1862-1918) is a French composer from the late Romantic period who opened up a new era of music - the impressionism movement. This thesis discusses 「Sonata for Violin and Piano」, Debussy’s only violin sonata and his last composition. This number consists of three movements and each movement is composed around major and minor scales with oriental modes, uses pentatonic scales, chromatic scales and whole- tone scales. It preserves a classic structure while it also shows Debussy’s unique musical style.
