전략적 여성혐오와 그 모순

Abstract

이 연구는 인터넷 커뮤니티 ‘일간베스트 저장소(이하 일베)’의 여성관련 게시물을 분석한 것이다. 일베 이용자들은 현재 신자유주의 한국사회의 여성과 남성을 둘러싼 인식, 규범에 불만을 갖고 있다. 이들의 여성혐오에는 이를 바로잡기 위해 여성을 통제하고, 교묘한 방식으로 차별을 정당화하는 기획과 전략의 측면이 있다. 본 연구는 일베 이용자들의 여성혐오를 남성성의 위기, 열등감에 기반 한 공격성의 표출로 보는 기존의 연구에서 나아가, 이들의 발화가 어떻게 현실의 젠더관계에 개입하고, 효과를 발휘하게 되는가를 분석한 것이다. 그러한 기획은 매끄럽게 진행된 것이 아니라, 그들 스스로 모순에 부딪히게 되며 내부의 갈등을 만들어내고 있었다. 본 연구는 이들이 여성을 혐오하는 방식 뿐 아니라 그 바탕이 되고 있는 사고방식의 한계, 모순, 문제점을 드러내고자 했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 일베 이용자들은 여성의 ‘섹스’와 남성 ‘경제력’의 교환가치가 공정하지 못하다는 인식을 갖고 있다. 이것은 신자유주의에서 경쟁이 치열해지고 노동자 ‘남성’의 위치는 더욱 열악해지며 ‘여성’은 여전히 성적 존재로 환원되고 있는 한국사회의 조건에 근거하고 있다. 그런데 이들은 여성성과 남성성이 형성된 사회구조를 문제 삼는 것이 아니라 이를 개별 여성의 문제로 축소시킨다. 이들은 ‘김치녀’를 비난함으로서 데이트 비용, 결혼 비용 등 경제적 측면에 있어 동등한 부담을 지면서도 성적 관계에 있어서 동등한 주체가 아니라 정숙한 여성이자, 어머니, 아내 등의 내조에 충실한 여성을 만들어 내고자 한다. 동시에 이들은 여성으로서의 섹슈얼리티를 무기로 남성의 경제적 노동의 대가를 갈취하지 않는, 순진하고 무지한 여성을 선망한다. 즉 이들은 데이트 비용, 결혼 비용 등 돈을 내고, 성적인 대가를 충실히 제공하는 여성을 ‘공정한 여성’으로 보고 있는 것이다. 일베 이용자들의 ‘김치녀’ 비난에는 사회구조의 문제를 개인 여성의 탓으로 돌리고 그녀들을 바꿈으로써 자신들이 곤란한 상황을 해결하려는 인식이 깔려 있다. 한편 그들은 이처럼 사회구조적 문제를 여성 개인들이 바뀜으로써 해결할 수 있는 것처럼 생각하고, 그들과의 관계에서 ‘절대적 평등’을 주장하면서도, 어떤 부분에 있어서는 전통적 성역할, 성별고정관념에 매몰되어 있는 등 혼란스러운 모습을 보인다. 이것은 신자유주의의 ‘개인’을 강조하는 사고방식과 근대사회의 성별고정관념, 성차별/평등에 대한 논의가 기묘하게 충돌하면서 결합한 것으로 분석 할 수 있다. 그러나 이는 그 논리적 박약함에 의하여 필연적으로 모순에 빠지게 된다. 무엇보다도 그들의 해결 방식은 현실에서 여성성과 남성성이 구축되어온 사회, 문화의 구조적 측면, 성별화 된 지위 등 복잡한 맥락 등을 삭제한 공허한 기반 위에 서 있는 것이므로 스스로 한계에 부딪히게 된다. 둘째, 일베 이용자들은 온라인 상에서 여성에 대한 노골적인 성적 폭력과 유린을 자행한다. 이는 단순하게 재미를 위한 것 또는 악감정을 표출하는 차원이 아니라 온라인 담론 장에서 여성의 짓밟아 그들의 움직임을 제한하려는 의도된 행위이다. 그러나 온라인 공간에서 재미와 주목을 끌기 위해 격해진 이 행위들은 현실에서 고소를 당하게 하고, 일베 이용자라는 낙인을 찍는다. 이러한 현실에서의 문제는 일베 이용자들로 하여금 더욱 교묘한 전략을 진행하도록 만든다. 이들은 실제로 고소를 당하거나 기사화되는 것을 두려워함과 동시에 이를 조롱하기도 한다. 또한 특정인이 아닌 여성 전반을 대상으로 수치심을 들게 하는 이름을 붙이고, 만화를 그리는 등, 고소를 피해 현실에서 유효하게 사용될 수 있는 방법에 대해 고민한다. 이들은 또한 필요에 따라 ‘일베’ 안에서 활동하면서도 전형적인‘일베’와 거리를 둔다. 이로써 이들은 낙인을 피해, 자신들이 옳다고 생각하는 사고방식, 지향점이 현실에서도 영향력을 발휘할 수 있도록 하는 것이다. 한편, 노골적인 성적 표현이나 극단적 형태의 표현은 은폐하고 ‘양성평등’을 앞세우는 방식으로, 구조적 차별을 삭제하면서 교묘하게 자신들의 논리를 정당화하고자 한다. 이 모든 움직임들은 일베에서 이루어지는 발화들이 단순한 ‘배설’이 아니라 여성들의 움직임을 통제하고 무력화하려는 정치적 지향성이 있음을 보여준다. 뿐만 아니라, 이렇게 개량된 전략들은 현실에서 타당한 것처럼 여겨지면서, ‘운동’, ‘연대’와 같은 정치적 실천과 연결되는 지점도 있었다. 셋째, 그러나 이러한 기획과 전략이 일베 내부에서 완전히 성공적인 것은 아니다. 이들이 여성을 통제하기 위해 내세우는 근거들은 일베의 특징과 정체성의 근간을 이루는 원칙들과 모순된다. 이들은 여성을 혐오하기 위해 ‘병신’을 표방해 각종 극단적인 공격을 퍼붓거나, 합리적 이성에 근거해 부당함을 주장하려다 이 둘이 모순되는 상황에 빠진다. 이를 바탕으로 일베 이용자들은 갈등하고 반목하며, 이들 내부로부터 균열이 보이기 시작한다. 이 같은 갈등, 균열은 일베가 여성을 통제하려는 방식 자체에 모순이 있다는 것을 드러내며, 이들이 원하는 질서를 구축해가려는 과정이 단순하고 매끄럽지만은 않다는 것을 보여준다. 일베를 상종할 가치도 없는 ‘쓰레기’로 보는 방식은 분명 이들을 무력화하는 측면이 있지만, 동시에 이들에 대한 제대로 된 비판을 또한 어렵게 한다. 그 틈을 타, 절대적 평등을 내세우며 ‘남성’ 스스로를 사회의 ‘루저’이자 실패로 인해 좌절한 약자인 것처럼 그려내는 일베의 사고방식은 현실에서 은연중에 타당한 것처럼 받아들여지고 있다. 이들의 여성혐오를 현재 불안한 사회구조로 인해 발생하는 필연적인 것으로 보거나, 논의할 가치가 없는 ‘예외적인 것’으로 보는 두 가지 방식은 현재의 성별을 둘러싼 대립 구도를 세밀하게 이해하지 못하고 있다는 점에서 모두 문제가 있다. 이런 상황에서 본 연구는 이들의 혐오가 여성을 자신들의 밑에 두고 지배하려는 의도된 전략에 따른 기획임을 드러내고자 했다. 이러한 분석 작업은 교묘한 방식으로 성 차별을 정당화하며, 여성에 대한 통제와 억압을 통해 자신들이 원하는 관계와 질서를 설정하려한 이들의 불순한 의도를 드러내기 위한 것이다. 이를 통해 그것이 타당하지 않으며 용인될 수 없는 것임을 밝히는 것이 이 글의 목적이다.;This study analyzes the posts about women in the internet community site, Ilgan Best Jeojangso(Daily Best Storage, hereafter Ilbe). The Ilbe users have discontents on the current recognition and norms around women and men in the neoliberal Korean society. Their abhorrence against women has an aspect of planning and strategy to control women and to justify discrimination with ingenious ways in order to fix them. In particular, this study, furthering from the previous studies considering the Ilbe users' hatred for women as expression of aggression based on crisis of masculinity and sense of inferiority, analyzes how their utterances intervene in and affect gender relations in the reality. This planning, however, has not been smoothly done and they have been creating internal conflicts with their own contradictions. This study has significance to try to reveal their limits, contradictions, and problems in thoughts as well as practice. The results of the study are as follows: First, the Ilbe users recognize that exchange value between women's 'sex' and men's 'labor' is not just. It has been derived from the reality of Korea that a man's status as laborer becomes more vulnerable and a 'woman' is reduced as sexual object in fierce competitions and difficulty in paid labor under neoliberalism. However, they do not problematize the social structure forming feminity and masculinity but reduce it as a problem of an individual women. They criticize 'kimchinyeo' and try to establish a model of woman whose economic burden such as costs for date and marriage is equal, but who is faithful in her job as a mother and wife with feminine virtues, not equal subject in sexual relations. At the same time, they desire a naive woman who does not extort men's economic compensation for their labor with her sexuality. That is, for them, a woman who can pay equally for date or marriage or provide sufficient sexual rewards is a 'fair one'. The Ilbe users attribute socio-structural problems to an individual woman and argue 'absolute equality' while they seem confused with concepts of deep traditional gender role and gender stereo type. This can be analyzed as unique combination between neoliberal 'individualism', modern gender stereotype, and debates about sexism/equality. However, it is problematic in its unevitable contradiction and deletion of socio-cultural structure and complex contexts about feminity and masculinity in the reality. Second, the Ilbe users indulge explicit sexual violence and infringement against women in online. However, these violent acts to attract interest and attention in online space make them accused and stigmatized in the reality. These actual problems make the Ilbe users pursue more intriguing strategies. They fear being accused or reported in newsmedia but ridicule it at the same time. They also plot methods to be used effectively in reality without risk of being sued, by naming not particular but general women shameful titles and drawing cartoons. If necessary, they even try to distance the Ilbe. Therefore, they enable their own thinking and orientation have influences on the reality without stigmatization against themselves. They cancel explicit sexual or extreme expressions and stand on 'gender equality', deleting structural discrimination and justifying their own logics in masterly ways. All these show the utterances in the Ilbe are just 'excretion' but have their own political orientations. And these modified strategies are seen plausible in the reality and are connected to political practices such as 'movement' and 'solidarity'. Third, however, these planning and strategies are not completely successful. Their evidences to control women are contradictory to the basic principles of the Ilbe consisting its bases for characteristics and identity. They rain extreme abuses upon women, standing for 'deformed'(byeongshin) and argue injustice based on rationality but meet conflict between them. Based on that, the Ilbe users are in discord and at odds with each other, showing cracks between them. These conflicts and cracks not only imply contradiction of Ilbe's own methods to control women but also show that their process to build their own order is not simple and smooth. Though the way to consider the Ilbe as worthless 'trash' makes them powerless, while have a problem to make proper criticism on them. The Ilbe's thought to make men themselves vulnerable, advocating absolute equality in the break, are plausibly accepted as reasonable in reality. Both the ways to see their abhorrence against as an unevitable thing derived from the current unstable social structure or as a worthless 'exceptional being' are problematic in not understanding conflicts around the current gender in detail. In this situation, this study tries to reveal political aspects of the Ilbe users' hatred against women as strategies and planning. This work, by revealing their impure intention to justify gender discrimination and to set their own relations and orders through control and suppression against women in ingenious ways, aims at disclose it is problematic and unreasonable.
