Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of paternal parenting and adolescents' self-esteem on their depression. A total of 405 second grade middle school students (204 boys and 201 girls) living in Gwangju responded to questionnaires, which included items related to paternal parenting, adolescents' self-esteem, and depression. Data were collected via questionnaires rated by adolescents themselves and were analyzed by t-test, correlations, and Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) using SPSS 21.0 and Amos 21.0 program. The primary results of this study were as follows: First, paternal parenting did not have an effect on adolescents' depression directly. Second, paternal parenting affected adolescents' depression indirectly through their self-esteem. Adolescents who perceived more paternal support, behavioral control and less paternal psychological control showed higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of depression. When adolescents perceived that their father was more supportive of them, monitoring their behavior and less psychologically controling them, they acknowledged their own ability and value positively which, in turn, led to lower levels of depression. Finally, there were no statistically significant gender differences in both direct and indirect pathways. In summary, paternal parenting did not affect on adolescents' depression directly, but had an effect on adolescents' depression indirectly through their self-esteem. The present study confirmed that both environmental and individual factors, including paternal parenting and self-esteem, need to be considered together in explaining adolescents' depression. Especially, this study shows that adolescents' self-esteem had more influence on their depression than paternal parenting. Findings have implications for future research and practice by highlighting the importance of adolescents' self-esteem and paternal parenting in developing intervention programs for adolescents' depression.
