청소년의 물질주의 가치와 심리적 부적응 및 학업성취의 관계

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 국내 청소년의 물질주의 가치와 심리적 부적응 및 학업성취 간의 관련성을 살펴보고 각각의 관계를 기본심리욕구가 매개하는지 확인하는 것이다. 이를 위해, 물질주의가 우울, 불안을 포함한 심리적 부적응과는 정적인 관련이 있고 학업성취와는 부적으로 관련되어 있다는 선행연구와 물질주의 가치가 기본심리욕구의 만족을 저해하며 기본심리욕구의 불만족은 심리적 안녕감이나 학업에 부정적 영향을 미친다는 선행연구를 바탕으로 구조 모형을 설정하고 검증하였다. 본 연구에는 제주지역에 위치한 일반계 고등학교에 재학 중인 남학생 195명과 여학생 142명의 총 337명이 참여하였다. 이들을 대상으로 물질주의, 기본심리욕구, 심리적 부적응에 관한 자기보고식 설문을 실시하고 학업성취의 객관적인 측정을 위해 연구 참여자의 동의하에 교사로부터 전국연합학력평가 성적을 수집하였다. 수집한 자료의 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 주요 변인 간 상관분석 결과, 물질주의와 기본심리욕구, 심리적 부적응, 학업성취 간에 모두 유의한 상관이 있었다. 물질주의는 심리적 부적응과는 정적관계, 학업성취와는 부적관계가 있었고 기본심리욕구는 물질주의, 심리적 부적응과는 부적으로, 학업성취와는 정적으로 관련되어 있었다. 둘째, 연구모형을 검증한 결과, 물질주의에서 심리적 부적응 및 학업성취로 가는 직접경로는 유의하지 않았고 물질주의에서 기본심리욕구를 통해 각각 심리적 부적응과 학업성취로 가는 간접경로가 유의한 것으로 확인되어 기본심리욕구가 물질주의와 심리적 부적응 및 물질주의와 학업성취 간의 관계를 완전 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 물질주의가 심리적 부적응에 정적으로 가져오는 결과와, 낮은 학업성취에 부적으로 가져오는 결과가 물질주의로 인한 자율성, 유능성, 관계성의 기본심리욕구의 불만족 때문인 것으로 설명되었다. 본 연구를 통하여 국내 청소년의 물질주의 가치가 학교적응에 중요한 심리적 적응과 학업적 적응 맥락에 주는 영향을 동시에 살펴봄으로써 청소년 적응에 대한 이해를 확장할 수 있었다. 또한 물질주의와 같은 외적 가치의 지향이 내적 만족에 중요한 근원적 가치들을 대신함으로써 심리적 적응과 학업 성취에 부정적인 영향을 가져오는 것을 확인할 수 있었으므로 충만한 삶을 위하여 물질적인 것 이전의 본질적인 가치가 무엇이었는지 재고할 필요성을 제시한다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 물질주의 가치가 내·외적 성격을 띤 동기요인으로 작용해 학업성취와 심리적 적응에 가져오는 결과를 제시함으로써 물질주의적 가치가 결과만이 중시되고 경쟁을 부추기며 통제적인 내적 동기를 낮추는 국내의 교육환경과 결부되어 어떤 영향을 가져오는지 살펴볼 수 있었다.;The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between materialistic value and both psychological maladjustment and academic achievement among Korean adolescents along with mediating effect of basic psychological needs. Based on previous research, this study hypothesized that the adolescents’ materialistic value would have positive relationship with psychological maladjustment such as depression and anxiety and would have negative relationship between materialistic value and academic achievement. Particularly, it is expected that basic psychological needs would mediate the relationship between materialistic values and both psychological maladjustment and academic achievement respectively. A sample of 337 adolescents(195 boys and 142 girls) ages 17-18 completed self-report surveys that measured materialistic values, basic psychological needs and psychological maladjustments(i.e., depression and anxiety), and then, their nationwide scholastic aptitude test scores that was taken in March, 2015 were collected from their teachers under the agreement of participants. To test the hypothesis, a correlation analysis and structural equation modeling(SEM) was used. The results are as follows. First, as hypothesized, there was significant positive relationship between materialistic value and psychological maladjustment, and significant negative relationship between materialistic value and academic achievement. Second, the test of structural equation modeling(SEM) result revealed that basic psychological needs had full mediating effect between materialistic value and psychological maladjustment, and between materialistic value and academic achievement as well. Lastly, mediate analysis supported the significant full mediation effect of basic psychological needs between materialistic value and both outcomes. Findings in this study suggest that Korean adolescents’ materialistic values are related to upper levels of psychological maladjustments and lower levels of academic achievement that is critical to adolescents’ school adjustment. It has important implications that specific value orientation could result in maladjustments of adolescents through the satisfaction or frustration of basic psychological needs, combined with the Korean social and educational environment. Further implications and limitations of this study are discussed.
