Abstract
What is the morality in moral subject? Korea’s moral curriculum has experienced many changes to find the answer of this question. First, the existing morality is represented by the collection of values, which is given to students in the form of the finished virtues. This morality changes teachers into virtue messengers instead of existing- or social- value system, and degrades students to passive beings that consent to given virtues. In other words, Korea’s moral subject faces double-teachers and students- problems that come from the definition of what the morality is. In particular, in the case of students, for external issues they become mechanical morality judges who know the moral answers but do not carry out the answers, and for their own internal issues they rationalize the subject morality, not viewing their own situation and feelings objectively, at the same time. On the other hand, in the case of teachers, to deliver the contents designed by an established curriculum within the given lesson time number is their goal. Meanwhile, whenever the students’ immoral problems appear, the school finds the causes of problems in moral subject, subject teachers and parents that can’t induce the moral growth. However, in the premise of starting point of problems, namely ‘is the definition of morality right?’ and ‘is the morality one of the faultless values which are actually completed?’ the questions of commentator started. The community including the individual repeats changes as time goes by. And each time, the individuals cultivate the value of the community including themselves and redefine their moral standards. On an assumption that the community and society including the individual are not one of the completed forms, the value and the discourse that the community needs also vary gradually according to times and cultural situations. Thus the morality established based on the community also, cannot be finished and fixed knowledge. Therefore, the morality is not temporarily acquired ‘knowledge’ in human life, but something dynamic which has been completed cumulatively-progressively in the dimension of personal ‘value’. When the morality is redefined like this, the moral subject faces another question now. If so, it is about how such morality can be taught. This paper is intended to find its own answers. Because now the moral education faces a crisis of maintenance or abolition of the subject that began from distrust of the educational effect, it is needed to find the answers about how the redefined morality, the objective of a moral curriculum, can be realized and be taught. Accordingly, the overall objectives of this paper are as below. First, the current elementary·secondary moral curriculum, the objectives and the textbook content system are examined critically. Second, in order to achieve a true moral growth of students through the moral education, the theoretical foundation is established based on the concept of doing philosophy of the philosophy education and the school community. Third, in survey with E school’s students, the validation of the philosophy class and the school community for the moral growth of students is verified, and the concrete measures are developed to apply these in schools methodically. In other words, this paper, under the premise that the moral growth of students is based on the ‘doing philosophy and learning’ and the ‘school community’, will analyze directly the cause of the biggest reasons that the secondary moral education has been criticized, and find the alternative to it in the philosophy class and the school community. Under the same purposes as above, the chapter Ⅱ of this paper analyzes the current 2007 revised moral curriculum and the moral education textbook, examines the fundamental ‘objectives’ of the moral subject and the essential definition of morality, and examines the contents connection between the elementary moral subject and the secondary moral subject. Through this, it is intended to critically review the policy and the direction that morality pursues. The chapter III pursues the theoretical previous studies to analyze the class of the moral subject and the school characteristics of the E middle school. It first examines doing philosophy that the philosophy class pursues, and inquires the concept of learning when you learn the philosophy, based on the theory of Sato Manabu(1951-). The school community theoretical foundations are examined at philosophy of John Dewey (1859 -1952). Also, this chapter attempts to examine how the theoretical foundations of Sato Manabu and John Dewey apply to the E school. This proceeds based on the information disclosure, the syllabus and evaluation plan published on the school homepage (www.2woo.net) and the school evaluation materials. Accordingly, it is intended to measure the moral-educational effects of the philosophy subject and the school community. The chapter Ⅳ in this paper tries to analyze the results of a questionnaire survey with students of the E alternative school in Bundang, and derive what the philosophy class and the school community imply to the moral education. The questionnaire is conducted in the form of direct questionnaire using Google Drive (https://www.google.com/intl/ko/drive/), and 60 students of the E school participated. In the last chapter Ⅴ, specific application methods of the philosophy class and the school community to be valid in the moral education will be proposed. In the case of the philosophy class, a few things that moral education teachers can utilize in class will be selected and organized, which are the things that the writer did in the actual E school work, among things about the philosophy class content and the teaching method. In the case of the school community, it is intended to look at the practical cases of the E school that can give suggestions to the moral education among the school management elements. Also, through considering the problems of the philosophy class and the school community of the E school, it is intended to recognize such problems in the moral education and to make these applicable to the classroom climate and the school reality. Often morality is said as the thing that can’t be learned through the subject. I think this is because morality is conveyed not in the forms of finished knowledge, but in the forms of invisible and constantly changing values. Therefore, morality that does not result in changes in personal life and morality that is not constructed through the community are merely a collection of virtues that lost the original value. However, when students and teachers do not accept the morality as the only and absolute thing, students and teachers can all be active beings on the route to the moral growth. Humans can experience and dream of the infinite moral growth in the community no matter what their ages and the positions. And the continuously and actively growing life is the true moral life that is the objective of moral subject.;
