뮤지컬「맘마미아」분석을 통한 팝 뮤지컬의 음악제작 방안 연구

Abstract

「Mamma Mia」 is pop musical recasted with original songs of Swedish pop grounp ABBA. Pop musical has been on the stage steadily since 1970, but did not receive a favorable evaluation, for its lack of probability between original songs and the story. However, 「Mamma Mia」 released in 1999 is said to be the representative work opening the new genre, pop musical, and received great responses from all over the world. This thesis studies the pop musical 「Mamma Mia」 to analyze the arragement of the plot and musical number based on existing popular music. Moreover, I analyzed changed musical elements by comparing each number with the original song, thus reasoned out musical characteristics of pop musical genre. The story and numbers in accordance with are organized based on the popular music, for it is the nature of pop musical. Therefore, the selection of song and the lyrics are the main elements in the construction of the plot. Catherine Johnson, screen writer, analyzed the lyrics in ABBA’s songs, found out that the story in lyrics divide into it of the young generation and the older generation, and made up a story line with two generations with 22 selected songs. There are changed musical elements when comparing 22 songs arranged by the story line with the original songs. The content of lyrics is mostly similar, but parts of it are omitted or the chorus is repeated. Moreover, meaning of the song differs by the story line and there are parts where lyrics are changed with additional words according to the characters and the situation. These express the story line and the meaning of it. Form of the song is almost the same with the original song with solo and chorus. However, the songs were expanded and changed with duet and choir depending on the story line and the character. The tempo is generally fast and cheerful, but 4 slow songs were included for the audience to be immersed in the emotion of the characters. The characteristics of major and minor in Tonality is the same as the original. However, there is transposition considering the connection between two songs in order, and key of the vocal as well as transportation to sharp keys or flat keys depending on the mood of the song. Instruments include vocal, chorus, piano, keyboard, guitar, bass, drum, and percussion. The make up of band in the original songs does not have big difference, but it leads the atmosphere of the play by expanding or minimizing the performance. Examining the musical characteristics of each number, the progress such as rhythm, tune, and the counter line is connected with the story and delivered to the audience. To sum up, 「Mamma Mia」made the story by analyzing the content of the lyrics in popular music. It changed musical elements of the original according to the story line and showed the lyrics and the psychology of the characters effectively through musical characteristics of the original. Thus, I found out that the music traits of the number according to story line and the arrangement depending on the lyrics are placed with close probability. Like so, 「Mamma Mia」 overcame the limitations of arranging the existing popular music as musical number and thus developed pop musical one step further. I hope this study helps other studies on musical and development of it by suggesting application on the production of musical.; 뮤지컬「맘마미아」(Mamma Mia!, 1999)는 스웨덴 출신 팝 그룹 아바(ABBA)의 기존의 노래 곡을 가지고 재구성하여 만든 팝 뮤지컬이다. 팝 뮤지컬은 1970년대부터 꾸준히 무대에서 발표되었지만, 기존의 음악과 스토리와의 개연성 부족 등의 이유로 좋은 평가를 받지 못했다. 그러나 1999년에 발표된「맘마미아」는 뮤지컬에서 새로운 장르를 연 팝 뮤지컬의 대표적인 작품이라 할 정도로 전 세계적으로 큰 호응과 인기를 얻었다. 본 논문은 팝 뮤지컬「맘마미아」를 연구대상으로 하여 기존의 대중음악을 바탕으로 한 스토리 구성과 뮤지컬 넘버의 배치를 살펴보고, 각 넘버를 원곡과 비교하여 변화된 음악적 요소들을 분석하였다. 또한 각 넘버의 화성, 리듬, 선율, 오케스트레이션 등의 음악적 특징을 세부적으로 알아봄으로 가사내용에 따라 오케스트레이션은 어떻게 했는지, 뮤지컬 스토리에 따라 선율과 리듬, 화성은 어떻게 움직이고 있는지에 대해 분석함으로써 뮤지컬 「맘마미아」를 통한 팝 뮤지컬의 음악 제작에 대한 방안을 제시하였다. 팝 뮤지컬의 본질 상 스토리와 그에 따른 넘버들은 기존의 대중음악을 바탕으로 구성됨으로 곡 선정과 가사 내용이 줄거리를 구성하는 주요 요소 중의 하나이다. 극본가 캐서린 존슨은 아바의 노래 곡들의 가사 내용을 분석함으로써 젊은 세대와 성숙한 세대의 이야기로 나누어짐을 발견하고, 22곡을 선정하여 두 세대의 스토리를 구성하였다. 스토리 구성에 따라 배치된 22곡을 원곡과 비교하여 볼 때 변화된 음악적인 요소들은 다음과 같다. 가사의 내용을 살펴보면 원곡의 가사를 대체로 따르고 있으나 생략되거나 후렴이 반복되는 형태, 스토리에 따라 곡의 의미가 달라지는 형태, 등장인물과 사건에 따른 상황에 따라 부차적인 단어가 변경되는 형태로 개사한 부분이 있으며, 이를 통해 스토리의 흐름과 의미를 확실히 전달하였다. 노래 형태는 원곡의 솔로와 코러스의 노래 형태 구성과 큰 변화 없이 진행되고 있지만, 스토리 구성과 등장인물에 따라 듀엣 곡, 합창곡으로 변경, 확대하여 구성하였다. 템포는 전체적으로 빠르고 경쾌한 곡들이지만 4곡을 느린 템포의 곡으로 배치함으로 인물들의 감정 묘사를 하는 데에 몰입도를 높였다. 조성은 원곡과 같은 장조, 단조의 성격을 그대로 사용하였으나, 앞 뒤 곡의 연결성, 보컬의 키(Key)를 고려하여 이조하거나, 곡의 분위기에 따라 올림표 계통의 조 또는 내림표 계통의 조로 조옮김을 하였다. 악기 편성은 보컬, 코러스, 피아노, 키보드, 기타, 베이스 기타, 드럼, 퍼커션으로 되어있고, 원곡의 밴드 구성에 있어서 큰 변화는 없지만 확대 또는 축소하여 연주됨으로 극의 분위기를 이끌어간다. 또한 각 넘버의 음악적 특징을 살펴보면, 원곡의 선율, 리듬, 대선율 등의 음악적 진행들이 등장인물의 심리, 스토리와 연관되어 전달하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 정리하면 뮤지컬「맘마미아」는 기존의 대중음악의 가사 내용 분석을 통하여 스토리를 구성하였고, 스토리 구성에 따라 원곡의 음악적 요소들을 변화시키거나, 원곡의 음악적 특징을 통하여 가사와 인물의 심리를 효과적으로 전달하였다. 그리함으로 가사내용에 따른 스토리 구성과 스토리 구성에 따른 넘버의 음악적 특징이 밀접한 개연성을 가지고 배치되었음을 알아보았다. 이와 같이 뮤지컬「맘마미아」는 기존의 대중음악을 뮤지컬 넘버로서 구성하는 것에 대한 한계성을 극복하고 팝 뮤지컬의 발전을 한 단계 이끌었다. 본 연구를 통해 앞으로 팝 뮤지컬의 음악 제작에 있어서 활용방안을 제시함으로 뮤지컬의 연구와 발전에 보탬이 되길 기대한다.
