네드 로렘(Ned Rorem)의 세 개의 피아노 소나타에 대한 연구

Abstract

미국의 20세기 대표적인 예술 가곡 작곡가로 알려진 네드 로렘(Ned Rorem, 1923~현재)은 1940년대부터 2010년대에 이르기까지의 오랜 기간 동안 예술 가곡 외에도 교향곡, 오페라, 발레 음악, 극음악, 그리고 기악곡 등의 많은 작품들을 남겨 오고 있는 미국의 현대 음악 작곡가이다. 17세기부터 시작된 미국 음악의 역사는 서양 음악사의 긴 역사에 비해 짧은 역사였지만, 19세기부터 국민주의 정신을 토대로 작곡가들은‘미국 음악’을 만들어 내기 위해 노력했다. 당시 미국의 작곡가들은 유럽에서 건너와 미국에 정착한 백인 혈통이 많은데다 유럽식의 음악 공부를 했기에 독립적인 자국의 음악을 만들어 내는 데에는 한계점이 있었다. 하지만, 미국의 흑인 노예제도와 남북전쟁(1861년~1865년)으로 생겨난 흑인영가(negro spirituals)를 토대로 재즈음악이 생겨나면서 점차 그 형태를 갖추어 나가기 시작하였다. 또한, 프랑스의 작곡가 나디아 불랑제(Nadia Boulanger, 1887~1979)의 미국인 제자들이었던 아론 코플랜드(Aaron Copland, 1900~1990)와 버질 톰슨(Virgil Thomson, 1896~1989) 등은 프랑스 신고전주의 음악의 영향을 바탕으로 재즈음악을 접목함으로써 20세기 미국 음악의 보수파를 정립하게 되었는데, 네드 로렘은 바로 톰슨과 코플랜드의 뒤를 이어 독일 음악의 영향을 받았던 새뮤얼 바버(Samuel Barber, 1910~1981)와 더불어 20세기 미국 음악을 이끌어 나갔다. 인상주의와 신고전주의 음악의 영향이 뚜렷이 나타나는 음악을 썼던 로렘은 프란시스 풀랑(Francis Poulenc, 1899~1963)의 뒤를 이은 시적이며 아름다운 선율의 작곡가로 알려지기도 하였다. 로렘의 음악은 밝고 긍정적이며, 그의 서정적인 선율은 대체로 단순명료하며 긴 호흡을 지닌 점이 특징이다. 그러면서도 4도 음정 관계를 자주 사용하여 만들어진 반음계와 불협화음에 복잡하고 다양한 리듬을 더하여 격정적인 성격의 음악을 만들어 내어 두 가지의 대조적인 성격이 공존하는 음악을 작곡하였다. 로렘은 작곡가로서 미국 내의 여러 중요한 상들의 수상 경력을 갖고 있으며, 오랜 기간 동안 작곡과 교수로도 활발한 활동을 해 왔지만, 아직 그의 음악은 미국 외에 다른 나라에서는 많이 알려지지는 않은 편이다. 미국의 음악 평론가 브루스 듀피(Bruce Duffie, 1951~현재)와의 인터뷰에서 그는 “나의 음악은 심오한 그 어떤 음악적 역사의 미래를 위한 것이 아니며, 다른 어떠한 록 음악이나 팝 음악과 다를 바 없다고 생각한다”라고 말했으며, 또한 순수 그 자체의 자연스러운 음악을 추구하며 클래식 음악이라는 정해진 틀에 얽매이지 않고 대중적인 요소를 배제한 이 시대의 음악을 쓰는 작곡가가 되고 싶다고 강조했다. 로렘의 음악은 악기의 특성을 잘 사용하여 음향적인 색채가 잘 나타나면서 복잡하지 않고 간결하여 듣는 이들에게 어려운 음악적 이해를 요구하지 않는다. 이 작곡 기법은 특히 그의 예술 가곡과 피아노 작품들에서 잘 보여주고 있다. 본 논문에서는 로렘의 세 개의 피아노 소나타 작품을 집중적으로 분석하고 연구하여, 신고전주의의 영향과 다양한 피아노 연주법을 확인함으로써 그의 피아노 소나타의 음악적 특성을 밝혀 보고자 한다.;Ned Rorem(1923-present) is known as one of the most representative art song composers in the 20th century American Music. He has composed, from the 1940s until the 2010s, and still presently, diverse types of music such as symphonies, operas, ballet music, theatrical music and various instrumental works. The history of American music has started since the 17th century which is shorter than the history of the Western Music. However, the movement among the composers with Nationalism trying to construct their own 'American music' occurred in the 19th century. At that time, there was a limit in creating the independent American music since most of the American composers were the Caucasian settlers from Europe receiving the education in European music style. Nevertheless, Jazz music appeared and was developed into it's unique style based on the Negro spirituals emerged from the slavery and the Civil war(1861-1865). Moreover, Aaron Copland(1900-1990) and Virgil Thomson(1896-1980), the students of a French composer, Nadia Boulanger(1887-1979), created the conservatism in the 20th century American music based on Neoclassicism from France and Jazz music. Succeeding these composers, Ned Rorem became one of the leading composers in the 20th century American music along with Samuel Barber(1910-1981) who was influenced by German music. Ned Rorem's music, showing the influence of Impressionism and Neoclassicism, is full of beautiful and lyrical melodies like the one’s Francis Poulenc(1899-1963) composed. With the bright and positive aspects, his lyrical melodies are characterized by simple and long phrases. The various and complex rhythms as well as chromatics and dissonances created by the 4th interval are used to complete the passionate characteristics in his music and these two contrasting features are melted into his music. In spite of receiving major prizes and giving lectures in the USA as a composer and professor, Ned Rorem's music is not well known in other countries until now. In the interview with a music critic, Bruce Duffie(1951-present), he said, "My music career is not an activity for the future of the profound music history, but it is much the same to any other kinds of music like rock or pop music." In the pursuit of natural pureness, he emphasizes on composing music free from the standard frame of the classic music and any aspects of popularity. In addition, his music is rather simple and concise without requiring any comprehension of musical difficulties. As a talented pianist and composer, Ned Rorem accomplished his unique musical style by expressing piano part in his art songs and the characteristics and the rich tone color of the piano in his piano music. The purpose of this dissertation is, through analyzing his three piano sonatas, to make conclusive studies revealing Rorem's conservative and yet pianistically colorful musical idiom and characteristics.
