애니메이션 <업 (Up)>의 분석을 통한 마이클 지아키노 (Michael Giacchino)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

컴퓨터 기술의 발달로 인해 애니메이션은 발전을 거듭하여 대중예술의 한 분야로서 자리매김하고 있다. 이렇게 애니메이션의 중요성이 부각되면서 음악 또한 단순히 영상을 받쳐주는 기능을 넘어 의미 전달의 중요한 매체로써의 필수 조건이 되었다. 본 논문은 할리우드에서 활발히 활동하는 영화음악 작곡가 마이클 지아키노 (Michael Giacchino, 1967-)가 작곡한 애니메이션 <업 (Up, 2009)>을 분석하여 감독의 연출의도를 음악적 요소로 어떻게 표현했는지에 중점을 두었다. 그는 애니메이션 음악 뿐 아니라 드라마, 영화, 게임 음악에서도 두각을 나타내며 기존 오케스트라 음악에 현대음악적인 요소를 넣어 액션, 어드벤처 장르에서 뛰어난 역량을 드러내었다. 연구의 첫 단계로서 미국 애니메이션 제작사를 중심으로 애니메이션 음악의 발전 과정과 흐름을 알아보고 마이클 지아키노의 주요 작품세계를 연구하여 그의 음악 스타일과 성향 등을 알아보았다. 분석할 작품을 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말로 나누어 줄거리를 정리한 후 큐시트를 작성하고 음악이 들어가는 시점과 나오는 시점을 파악하여 음악과 영상의 상관관계를 살펴보았다. 본론에서는 <업>의 줄거리를 바탕으로 주인공을 포함한 등장인물의 성격과 심리를 음악적으로 표현한 마이클 지아키노의 음악적 특징에 대하여 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 감독의 연출의도가 어떻게 반영되었는지 연구하였다. 연구 결과, 마이클 지아키노는 주요 인물들의 모티브를 중심으로 사건의 발단에 따른 변주와 반복을 통해 상황, 분위기, 심리상태 등을 표현하였다. 작품에 등장하는 캐릭터 동작과 음악을 악기 특수주법과 음색으로 일치시켰고, 남아메리카의 라틴 리듬과 전통 타악기의 사용으로 파라다이스 폭포와 주변 분위기를 묘사하는 점이 특징적이었다. 더불어 주인공이 어린 시절을 보낸 1930년대에 유행하던 빅밴드 재즈 스타일의 음악을 오케스트라에 접목시켜 고전과 현대를 넘나드는 지아키노만의 음악적 스타일을 완성하였다. 본 논문이 마이클 지아키노를 비롯한 많은 영화 음악가들에 대한 지속적이고 체계적인 연구에 있어 많은 도움이 되길 바란다.;Development of computer technology have made animation movie to become a field of the top arts in the century. Beyond the role for background music, the original soundtrack is now an essential element as an important role for delivering the messages of the movie. Michael Giacchino (1967-), who is one of the famous composer working actively at Hollywood, has been composing the various genres of music including animation, TV series, movie and video games. He has a specialty on mixing modern elements into the classical orchestra. This thesis is focused on his musical descriptions via analyzing one of his work, <Up, 2009>. Focusing on the major animation studios in US, overall flows and developments of musics for animated movie was described. And Michael Giacchino's musical styles were analyzed via his major works. The plot of <UP> was divided by four parts, introduction, development, climax and conclusion. At each part, cue sheets of the movie, which contain the In & Out points, length, description and categories, were written and allowed to study the relationship between the music track and the scenes. Main part of this thesis described how he reflected the director's messages by his musical characteristics, by studying his musical expressions on the characters of <Up>. The study shows that Michael Giacchino expressed situation, atmosphere, and mood by variations and repeats based on the motives of main characters. He synchronized the music and character's action by using special playing skills of instruments. It was interesting to figure out the usage of latin rhythms and traditional instruments of South America to describe "Paradise Falls", which is the background of <Up>. In addition, to show the childhood life of the main character, Carl, Giacchino combined swing jazz, which was popular back in 1930s into the orchestra to create his unique style of music. I hope that this thesis helps for future researchers of analyzing many film composers including Michael Giacchino for continuous and systematic research.
