영화<가위손>에 나타난 대니 엘프만(Danny Elfman)의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구

Abstract

영화의 장르는 유형에 따라 로맨스, 코미디, 공포, 공상과학, 판타지, 느와르 등의 다양한 장르로 세분화되고 각각의 장르는 하나 또는 그 이상의 장르와 결합되기도 한다. 특히 판타지는 그리스어의 판타지아에서 유래한 뜻으로 환상을 주 소재로 삼으며 문학에서는 몽상적인 이야기 전반에 붙은 명칭을 의미하기도 한다. 이와 같은 문학적 요소에서 파생된 상상의 세계를 영화 속에 담아내며 자신만의 독특한 판타지 장르의 영화세계를 구축해온 팀 버튼(Tim Burton;1958∼)감독은 판타지 장르영화를 대표하는 감독이라 할 수 있다. 그리고 수편의 영화에서 팀 버튼 감독과의 협업을 통해 영화감독과 작곡가 콤비의 명성을 쌓아간 대니 엘프만(Danny Elfman;1953∼)은 독창적인 판타지 영화음악 장르의 세계를 선보인 영화음악작곡가로 평가받는다. 이중에서도 영화 <가위손>은 기묘하고 감동적이며 독창적이고 아름다운 상상력으로 빚어낸 현대의 동화로써 판타지 장르 영화의 어법과 이미지를 음악적 어법으로 연출하고 제작한 대니 엘프만의 뛰어난 음악적 역량이 돋보이는 작품이라 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 독창적인 판타지 영화음악 장르의 세계를 선보인 영화음악작곡가 대니 엘프만의 영화 <가위손>에 나타난 음악적 특징과 기법들을 분석하고 연구함으로써 대니 엘프만이 추구하는 판타지 장르영화음악을 위한 효과적인 음악제작기법을 도출하고자 하였다. 연구 방법으로는 먼저 판타지 영화장르에 관한 이론적 배경과 작곡가 대니 엘프만의 작품세계에 대한 선행연구를 수행하였다. 그리고 음악 분석에 앞서 영화에 나타난 전체적인 음악의 구성을 줄거리 전개에 따라 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말로 나누어 각 부분에 등장하는 음악을 파악하여 분석을 위한 곡을 선정하였다. 음악 분석에 있어서는 영상과 상호 관계 속에서 나타난 음악의 기능과 역할을 살펴보았으며 이 작품에 나타난 대니 엘프만의 음악적 특징들을 도출하였다. 연구 결과 영화 <가위손>에 나타난 음악적 특징은 음악의 형식을 영상과 이야기의 흐름에 일치시키는 영상과 음악의 동기화의 장치로 활용하고 있으며 영화에 등장하는 주요 캐릭터들에게 특정한 유도동기를 부여하는 특징을 보이고 있었다. 또한 소년과 여성으로 구성된 합창의 인성을 활용하여 작품의 특징적 캐릭터를 음색에 담아내고 있으며, 다양한 연주 기법을 통해 영화 속에 등장하는 중요한 캐릭터의 이미지와 영상의 배경에 입체감을 더하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 불규칙적이고 비정형화된 리듬패턴을 바탕으로 하는 특징적 형태의 연결구를 활용하여 영화 속 장면 전환의 극적인 대비와 영화의 전개에 따른 극적 긴장감 및 상황을 효과적으로 묘사하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 첼레스타, 하프, 합창과 같은 특징적 악기들을 활용하여 판타지라는 영화의 장르적 특징을 담아내고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 작곡가 대니 엘프만의 독특한 영화음악세계를 이해하고 나아가 판타지영화음악의 장르를 연구하는데 있어 의미 있는 시도가 될 것이라 사려 된다. 그리고 이를 통해 판타지 장르를 기반으로 한 영화 음악 연구와 제작 발전에 보탬이 되기를 바란다.;Films are subdivided into various genres; Romance, Comedy, Horror, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Noir, and each one of them may be combined with one or more other genres. In particular, "fantasy" came from a Greek word, "fantasia" deals with matters related to fantasy, and it is symbolic of reveries in literature. Involving an imaginary world that is derived from the above literary element, Tim Burton(1958~) is known for in deed the best director worldwide, and having settled down his own peculiar styles of fantasy films. Though a substantial amount of work was not only done by Burton, but with one of the most originative film music composers, Danny Elfman(1953~), and their collaboration generated a great outcome. Most of all, <Edward Scissorhands> is strange, but creative and beautifully touching modern fairy tale, and also a magnificent transformation of fantasy film's expressions to musical expressions in which Elfman's musical calibre stands out. Hence, this study is to analyze and research on the musical characters and techniques that Elfman demonstrated in <Edward Scissorhands>, and to detect effective music production techniques that Elfman pursues in making up fantasy film music. In order to launch the study, the theoretical background of fantasy films and Burton and Elfman's viewpoints of their work were carried out. Along with Burton and Elfman's intention, the movie's overall musical composition was divided into several parts according to the narrative arc, and the music belonged to each narrative part was chosen to be micro-analyzed. In addition, Elfman's musical features applied in the movie were found out, and observed how the musical techniques went along with the movie scenes. As a result of the study, <Edward Scissorhands> is a certainly successful work as it delivers a great balance of the images and the music, especially the music plays a huge role motivating the main characters of the movie. Besides, the chorus ensemble of boys and women grants a specific tone to the main characters, and this outstanding technique facilitates the image of characters and the image of background to be more stereoscopic. Furthermore, utilizing instruments such as a celesta, a harp and the chorus ensemble, and arrhythmical also atypical distinctive rhythm patterns allow the movie to have fantasy films' unique features, and all of these help the movie portray situational dramatic tension as the plot flows. This study, in conclusion, will be a meaningful attempt to understand original and innovative viewpoints of Elfman in composing film music, and moreover to further research on music styles used in fantasy films. And hopefully, this study will provide a helpful guidance to the further research and production of fantasy films.
