Abstract
The purpose of this study is to confirm the effectiveness of Wee project conducted for school safety and school violence prevention by identifying how the victimized experience of school violence influences on the school violence perpetration through resilience and self-control and verifying the mediating effect of Wee class. The data was drawn from 3rd wave of ‘2010 Seoul Education Longitudinal Study’ collected by Seoul Education Research & Information Institute. The data of 3,823 3rd grade middle school students was used for final analysis by Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) analysis, multi-group analysis and independent sample t-test using SPSS 21 and AMOS 21. The main results of this study are as follow: First, victimized experience of school violence had direct effect on school violence perpetration while having partial indirect effect through resilience and self-control. It was confirmed that the possibilities to participate in school violence perpetration increased as the victimized experience of school violence increased. Second, the victimized experience of school violence was found to give negative impacts on resilience and self-control. Third, on school violence perpetration, self-control was found to give negative impacts and resilience was found to give positive impacts. Forth, resilience and self-control was found to have significant mediating effect in the relationship between the victimized experience and perpetration behavior of school violence. It indicates that a variety of paths existed in the influences of the victimized experience of bullying behavior. Fifth, the students attending in the schools with Wee class were found to be more aware of the seriousness of school violence relatively. The actual level of school violence showed no differences among the groups. Sixth, the influences of the victimized experience on resilience, self-control, school violence perpetration showed the differences among groups according to the operation of Wee class. The mediating effect of Wee class was not found in the influences of resilience and self-control on school violence perpetration. The discussions and implications are as follows. The intervention to prevent victimized students of school violence from becoming perpetrator should be prepared. Since resilience and self-control is the mediating factor between the victimized experience and perpetration, the active intervention on these two factors is required. This study introduces the composite perspectives on the students who had the double experiences of victimization and perpetration to the discourse on school violence. It also prepares the basic materials for discussing the intervention related to school violence by identifying a variety of paths in which the victimized experience of school violence is transferred to perpetration. In addition, it verifies the actual effective of Wee class, the national project aiming at school safety and school violence prevention. Considering that there are only few studies regarding the actual effectiveness of Wee class on students, this study particularly has the implication of contributing to suggesting the directions for the follow-up studies on Wee project.
