A rock-carved Buddha Triad of Sammaksa is a statue of Buddha that is placed on the precincts of Sammaksa temple(三幕寺) in Samsung Mountain(三聖山), which is situated at Seoksudong, Anyangsi, Gyeonggido. This statue was recognized by academia from earlier on, as the only Tejaprabha Buddha from the Joseon Dynasty that has been carved on the rock. An inscription indicates that it was carved in 1763; it holds a value as a chronological data and takes an important position providing a key to the development of the Tejaprabha Buddha in 18th Century. However, other than the fact that it is carved on the rock, there are singularities to this Tejaprabha Buddha compared with the original Tejaprabha Buddha. The original Tejaprabha Buddha is either on a bull-chariot(牛車) or holding a Golden-Dharma cakra(金輪), while the Buddha of Sammaksa is taking a gesture of Dhyana-Mudra(禪定印) and holding a staff that is assumed to be the maṇi(寶珠). It is assisted by the flanking bodhisttvas wearing a headdress with disc-shaped decoration; the sacred image of Buddha seems very similar to the Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha Triad. However, from an inscription addressing on the palace where the rock-carved Buddha is enshrined, it is assumed that the rock-carved Buddha Triad of Sammaksa was constructed having the Tejaprabha Buddha in consideration, not the Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha Triad. According to the construction and reconstruction inscription written under the Buddha, the Seven-Stars Hall(七星殿) was first built in 1764, a year after the statue of Buddha has been constructed, and was reconstructed to shrine in 1881. The fact that the construction period of the rock-carved Buddha and the Seven-Stars Hall is close indicates a circumstantial evidence that people who originated the statue of Buddha and led the construction of the hall would have constructed the statue as a Tejaprabha Buddha. This icon of the Tejaprabha Buddha in Sammaksa has no history and since it is unprecedented, there are no analysis in earlier studies neither on the icon nor on the origin of the style; only it was classified as a variant of style or was excluded from the study of a Tejaprabha Buddha. Therefore, noticing the fact that the statue of Buddha does not contain a uniform significance and that it can be very divergent depending on the history, the spatial environment, and the perception of the client or the spectator, this study focuses on the point that the construction background of the Tejaprabha Buddha in Sammaksa and the factor of the icon’s formation that was created in a similar form to the Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha originated from a sense of place of the Buddha statue and a religious life back then. A Rock-Carved Buddha Triad of Sammaksa was constructed on the Samsung Mountain where primitive folk beliefs were prevalent from old times, gaining a history and a miracle that the Mountain possessed as the origin of beliefs. At this steep and rocky mountain, an ideology of pure land with the medium of rock was widely spread for long time and many statues of the Buddha were constructed other than the Triad of Sammaksa. These rock-carved Buddha statues were especially carved on a sacred rock of the mountain, showing the intention to naturally acquire a strong life force that a rock symbolizes and an aura as a material of beliefs, while gaining the previous authority and the historical background as a sanctum. This sense of place was also used on the Tejaprabha Buddha as a mean to succeed the existing sanctum’s authority. Before the Buddha statue was placed, there were Namgeunseok(男根石), a phallic-shaped sculpture, and Yeogeunseok(女根石), a vagina sculpture, constructed as main origins of beliefs; people who planned the construction of the Buddha statue would have endowed sculptures’ability of blessing and benediction to the Tejeprabha Buddha statue and expected the divine power of the statue to be doubled as an object of the belief in the pure land. On the other hand, a factor that drove the construction of the statue in a specific form of the Tejaprabha Buddha while succeeding the authority of sanctum that sculptures had possessed can be found from the facts that the belief on the Tejaprabha Buddha has been transformed and expanded in late Joseon Dynasty, to the form that believes in the blessing of present life and that the Tejaprabha Buddha has a faithful finality that coincide with the nature of the previous sanctum. The Tejaprabha Buddha was inherently an icon of the Pole Star that was created in the harmonization progress of the ancient ideology of astronomy and Buddhism. His entourage including the main image of Buddha is deeply related to the allegory of the Nine Seizers(九曜). Like how the Pole Star involves every constellations in charge, the Tejaprabha Buddha was thought to be a Buddha who governs various stellar deities and dispels all calamities, especially of celestial origin. However, as it blended with Taoism’s belief of the Big Dipper that was prevalent in the late Joseon Dynasty, the Tejaprabha Buddha drew the spotlight of people taking over the ability of the Big Dipper, a “prolongation of life”, which not only let the Buddha to possess the divine power of the good but also to control the specific gain of the present life, that is, a prosperity of posterity. It is assumed that the Tejaprabha Buddha had been chosen to be constructed out of numerous Buddhas followed by the assumption that its expanded abilities such as controlling life and blessing posterity would have formed a purposive relation with a growing ability and immortality of phallic and vagina shaped sculptures. Thus, the rock-carved Buddha Triad of Sammaksa seems to be in harmonization with phallic and vagina shaped sculptures with the medium of common symbol that those possess as objects of folk beliefs; however, through the immanent harmonization of Buddhism itself, it also shows an icon’s evolvement that is completely different from the previous Tejaprabha Buddha. This aspect is shown in the facts that the rock-carved Buddha Triad of Sammaksa has a name called the Tejaprabha Buddha and that it has a same icon as the Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha. The primary reason why the Tejaprabha Buddha of Sammaksa adopted the icon of the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha is because the statue was constructed in a transition period when the belief on the Tejaprabha Buddha was expanding. As mentioned earlier, a belief of the Big Dipper was harmonized with the Tejaprabha Buddha in the late Joseon Dynasty. In this progress, an element of the belief in the pure land that was in respect of the blessing of the present life had been solidified and the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha were being used together with the icon, since they had the identical power such as a power of keeping the bad away from people and a life of health and longevity. In case of Sammaksa, the main image of Buddha is holding the maṇi and taking the Dhyana-Mudra and the flanking bodhisattva is wearing the headdress with the symbol of sun and moon; these forms of icons are so similar that it is probable that it could have been seen as the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha Triad if the name of the hall “Seven-Stars”hadn’t been found. This mixed use of icons is mainly shown in Seoul and Gyeonggi area and the reason why such use is shown in specific areas hasn’t been identified yet. Only the Tejaprabha Buddha of Sammaksa is assumed to be the early example of the aspect. Another reason why a name and a form of the Buddha statue is in discord is because the principle of making Buddha statues and the purpose of religious life cannot necessarily be in a purposive relation. This can be inferred from religious lives of people back then. Back in the late Joseon Dynasty, people would recite 『Sutra of the Seven Medicine Buddhas(藥師琉璃光七佛本願功德經)』 to make an offering to seven stars because they were confused of identical names of the Seven Medical Buddhas(藥師七佛) and the Seven-Stars Buddhas(七星佛). This case suggests that appearances, gestures or staffs were not main interests of worshipers who were subjects of a religious action and It is unsure that they would have even fully understood immanent fundamentals inside the icon and the principle of making Buddha statues. Worshipers were only in needs of divine existence who would answer to their pray. They didn’t care if the image of that existence were the Tejaprabha Buddha or the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha. However, a sharing of divine function and power between the Tejaprabha Buddha and the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha gradually got separated and the function got more laid on the Tejaprabha Buddha. As Three World Buddhas(三世佛) became popular in 19th Century, the Bhaiṣajyaguru Buddha was transferred as one of the Three World Buddhas of the Buddha Hall(大雄殿) and an independent enshrinement had diminished. People who wanted to pray for the present life’s desire gathered into the Seven Stars Hall as a reaction to such phenomenon, which resulted in the rapid increase of the number of the Chilsongtaeng(七星幀), a Seven-Stars Buddhist Painting. This study presents that the Tejaprabha Buddha’s icon in Sammaksa with no history was a result of the harmonization of dispersed belief systems that differed by situations and purposes. This means that the transformation of the Buddha statue’s icon is worked by various meta-variables such as a secular desire of worshiper, a sense of place where the statue is located, and a specific situation in history. For the following meaning, the value of the Tejaprabha Buddha statue in Sammaksa should be recounted as a statue that best shows a vestige of transforming belief of the Tejaprabha Buddha in the Joseon Dynasty.-
