렘 쿨하스(Rem koolhaas) 건축에 나타난 기하학적 조형성을 응용한 데님 패션 디자인 연구

Abstract

인류의 역사가 시작된 이래 건축과 패션(Fashion)은 인류의 발달과 맥을 함께 이어왔다. 사회, 정치, 종교, 문화적 정체성을 표현하는 예술 분야의 하나로서 동시대 사람들의 삶과 정신 활동이 응축된 결과물이라고 할 수 있다. 이제 패션과 건축의 언어 사이에는 경계선이 모호해지고 서로 차용하는 등 상호 관계를 맺고 있다. 현대의 건축은 인간에게 필요한 기본적인 공간의 제공 이외에도 미적인 충족과 더불어 예술적인 차별성을 보여주기 위해 표피디자인과 같이 마치 건축에 옷을 입히는 작업을 하고 있다. 또한 패션디자이너들은 독창적인 디자인의 전개를 위해 건축에서 아이디어를 얻어 구조적인 디자인을 제시하면서 다양한 시도를 거듭하고 있다. 패션 디자인을 실현하기 위해 많은 재료를 필요로 하는데 이 중 소재는 이런 독창적인 디자인을 개발하는데 큰 몫을 담당하고 있다. 그리고 많은 소재 중에 데님은 현대 패션 디자인 분야에 있어서 줄곧 혁신과 유행을 이끌어온 중요한 소재로 자리 잡아 왔다. 과거에는 캐주얼 웨어(Casual Wear)의 전형으로 인식되어 있으나 최근 여러 디자이너들에 의해 독창적인 아이디어와 다양한 패션 기법 등을 통해 데님의 미적 효과가 극대화되고 있으며 더 나아가 하이패션(High-Fashion)으로까지 발전을 이루고 있다. 이와 같은 데님의 현대적 변화에 주목하여 본 연구에서는 데님 패션 디자인의 창의적 변모를 확장시키고자 하였다. 데님의 구조적 조형미를 살린 고급스럽고 포멀한 작품을 제작하기 위하여, 본 연구는 네덜란드의 대표적 건축가 렘 쿨하스의 건축 세계를 참고로 하였다. 그의 실험적인 건축 작품에서 기하학적 조형성을 검토, 분석하였고, 이를 토대로 비정형적이고 비대칭적인 조형미를 지닌 구조적 디자인을 데님 소재를 이용하여 변화시켰다. 견고한 조직의 데님 소재를 활용하여 구조적 조형미를 살린 고급스럽고 포멀한 6벌의 작품을 제작한 결과 본 연구의 내용과 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 렘 쿨하스 건축 작품의 형과 형태에서 나타난 조형성으로부터 구체적으로 비대칭적이고 비정형적인 삼각, 사각, 오각형들이 면 분할의 방식으로 연결되었음을 알 수 있었다. 그 결과 기하학적인 형태로부터 도출된 삼각, 사각, 오각형들이 비대칭적이고 비정형적인 입방체들로 발전되고 결합되어 거대한 기하학적 형태로 표현되는 것으로 분석되었다. 둘째, 최근 데님의 종류는 스러브얀데님, 텐셀데님 ,스판데님 등 실루엣이 잘 드러나게 터치가 부드러운 경량소재가 많이 개발되고 있으며, 데님에 대한 현대 패션 디자인에 대하여 고찰한 결과, 기존 데님 소재의 캐주얼한 기법과 디자인에서 탈피하여 미적 효과를 창출하기 위한 시도가 이어지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 면 분할 디자인, 회화적 기법 등 다양하고 새로운 방법의 표현들이 등장했고, 장신구들과의 레이스 등의 접목을 통해 여성적인 미적 효과를 표출시키고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 더 나아가 소프트데님, 져지 데님, 코팅 데님 등 소재에 대한 다양한 가공을 통해 한층 더 고급스럽고 포멀한 디자인에 활용해왔음을 알게 되었다. 셋째, 렘 쿨하스 건축에 나타난 기하학적 조형성을 도출하여, 디자인에 적용한 결과 건축의 비정형적이고 비대칭적인 형과 형태를 구조적으로 나타낼 수 있었다. 결과적으로 기하학적 형태미가 구조적으로 잘 표현될 수 있었다. 넷째, 렘 쿨하스 건축 조형의 딱딱하고 기하학적이며 힘있는 조형미가 여성복에 적용된 결과 남성성의 이미지가 크게 부가됨을 알 수 있었다. 다섯째, 데님 소재의 캐주얼성에 대한 사회적 통념을 발상의 전환을 통해 포멀한 디자인에 적용한 결과 포멀한 이미지를 제시할 수 있었다. 구조적인 형태를 잘 표현하기 위해 선택한 데님 소재였지만 실제 제작 과정에서 구조적 형태를 표현하는데 어려움이 있었고 이러한 결과를 반영하여 데님 소재가 정장스타일로도 발전할 수 있도록 소재 개발 연구가 진행되어야 할 것이라고 생각한다. 현대 패션디자인 연구에 있어서 건축의 조형적 특성을 응용한 연구는 지속적으로 이루어져 왔으나 데님과의 접목된 건축적인 패션 디자인에 관한 연구는 그다지 많지 않은 편으로 소재 개발과 함께 구조적 형태감을 잘 표현 할 수 있는 디자인 연구가 필요하다고 생각된다. 아울러 대중적이고 독창적 표현이 가능한 데님 소재의 특성에 관한 연구가 활발해지기를 바라며, 데님을 이용한 정장 부분에 대해서도 새로운 연구와 관심이 나타나기를 기대한다.;Since the beginning of human history, the architecture and fashion have been with the development of mankind. As an art expressing social, political, religious and cultural identities, they are the condensed products containing contemporaries’ lives and mental activities. Now the language boundaries between the fashion and architecture become vague, forming interrelations as appropriating each other. The contemporary architecture, besides providing a basic space necessary for humans, performs the process of clothing an architecture like a skin design to demonstrate the artistic distinction along with the aesthetic satisfaction. Then the fashion designers take ideas from architectures to develop a unique design, suggesting structural design, and experiment various attempts. To materialize fashion design, a great number of materials are required and the invention of a new design as such plays a major role. The denim among many materials has been established as an important material leading the innovation and trends in the contemporary fashion design field. In the past, it was recognized as an embodiment of a Casual Wear but lately, the aesthetic effects of denim has been maximized through inventive ideas and diverse fashion techniques by the various designers, advancing further as a High-Fashion. Focused on this contemporary change in denim material, this research aims to expand the creative transformation of denim fashion design. The architectural world of the renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas was referenced in order to produce a sophisticated and formal piece accentuating structural beauty of denim. Taking his experimental architectures, the geometric formative qualities were explored and analyzed, and based on the findings, the structural design with atypical and asymmetrical aesthetic beauty was converted using the denim material. Using the denim of a tight fiber structure, six pieces of elegant and formal garments highlighting the structural aesthetic qualities were created, and the resulting findings and conclusions are as follows. First, it was identified from the formal qualities appeared in the Rem Koolhaas’ architectures that asymmetrical and atypical triangles, squares, and pentagons are connected in the manner of surface division. As a result, those triangles, squares, and pentagons drawn from the geometric shapes developed and combined as asymmetrical and atypical cubes to become a huge geometric configuration. Second, the research of denim in the contemporary fashion design showed the recent development of the lightweight and soft materials such as the slub yarn denim, tinsel denim, span denim, and others that moulds to the body, continuing to create aesthetic effects away from casual techniques and designs of existing denim materials. The varied and new expression methods including surface dividing design, painterly technique, etc. were emerged and even feminine aesthetic effect was presented by combining denim with different accessories or laces. In addition, it was found that the denims like the soft denim, jersey denim, or coating denims made from different processes were applied in creating more luxurious and formal designs. Third, the formal qualities derived from the architectures of Rem Koolhaas were employed in designing, and the result is structural representation of atypical and asymmetrical shapes and forms of architecture. Fourth, the stiff, geometric and solid aesthetic properties of Rem Koolhaas’ architectures applied to the women’s clothing stressed the masculinity. Fifth, it was possible to propose a formal image of denim in the formal design through the conceptual shift regarding the social conventions as to casual denim material. Though the denim material was selected to better demonstrate structural shape, there were difficulties in expressing the structural shape in the actual materialization process, and as reflecting this result, it is considered that the additional material development research is required to develop the denim material in the formal suit style. In the contemporary fashion design research, there have been continuous researches applying architectural formal qualities, but the research combining the denim with architectural fashion design is still insufficient, requiring advanced design research to enable improved structural shape along with the development of materials. Moreover, it is expected to revitalize the research on the characteristics of denim materials allowing popular and unique expressions, and to see new researches and interests in using the denim material for a formal suit.
