부모-자녀 간 의사소통과 문화접변 스트레스가 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년의 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parent-adolescent communication and acculturative stress on life satisfaction of adolescents studying abroad without parents. A total of 272 from 9th to 12th grade high school students (120 boys and 152 girls) studying English in foreign countries responded to questionnaires, which included items related to parent-child communication, accluturative stress, and life satisfaction. All data were analyzed by t-test, correlations and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0 program. The main results of this study were as follows: First, although father-adolescent communication did not have a direct effect on life satisfaction, mother-adolescent communication have a direct effect on life satisfaction. Adolescents studying abroad without parents who had an open communication with their mothers showed a higher level of life satisfaction. Second, both father-adolescent communication and mother-adolescent communication had an indirect effect on life satisfaction of adolescents studying abroad without parents through acculturative stress. When adolescents studying abroad had a positive communication with their fathers and mothers, they perceived a lower level of acculturative stress, and it led to a higher level of life satisfaction. In summary, the results from the research showed that father-adolescent communication, mother-adolescent communication, and acculturative stress played important roles in predicting life satisfaction of adolescents studying abroad without parents. Especially, this study indicates that the adolescents studying abroad need to have an open and positive communication with mother to enhance their life satisfaction. Futhermore, this study verifies that reducing acculturative stress of the adolescents is very crucial for improving their life satisfaction. These findings have implications for future research and practice in developing acculturative stress intervention programs for adolescents studying abroad without parents and heightening the level of their life satisfaction.; 본 연구의 목적은 부모-자녀 간 의사소통이 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년의 삶의 만족도에 미치는 직접적 영향과 문화접변 스트레스를 통한 간접적 영향을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해, 현재 외국에 위치한 고등학교에서 영어로 학습하는 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년 272명(남학생: 120명, 여학생: 152명)을 대상으로 자기보고식 질문지법을 사용하여 자료를 수집하였다. 부모-자녀 간 의사소통은 Barnes와 Olson(1982)이 개발한 부모-자녀 간 의사소통 척도(Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory; PACI)를 민하영(1991)이 번안한 청소년 자녀용 질문지를 사용하여 측정하였다. 문화접변 스트레스는 Sandhu와 Asrabadi(1994)의 문화접변 스트레스 척도(Acculturative Stress Scale for International Students; ASSIS)를 이승종(1995)이 번안한 질문지를 수정하여 측정하였다. 또한 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년의 삶의 만족도는 Diener, Emmons, Larsen과 Griffins(1985)의 삶의 만족도 척도(The Satisfaction With Life Scale; SWLS)를 이은경(2004)이 번안한 척도를 사용하여 측정하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 18.0를 사용하여, t 검정 및 상관관계분석을 실시하였고, AMOS 21.0 프로그램을 사용하여 구조방정식 모형(Structural Equation Modeling; SEM)을 분석하였다. 본 연구의 연구문제에 따른 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부-자녀 간 의사소통이 나 홀로 조기유학 고등학생의 삶의 만족도에 미치는 직접적인 경로는 유의하지 않았으나, 모-자녀 간 의사소통은 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년의 삶의 만족도에 직접적으로 영향을 미쳐, 모-자녀 간 의사소통이 긍정적이고 개방적일수록 삶의 만족도는 높았다. 둘째, 부-자녀 및 모-자녀 간 의사소통은 문화접변 스트레스를 통해 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년의 삶의 만족도에 간접적으로 영향을 미쳐, 부모와 자녀 간에 개방적이고 원활한 의사소통이 이루어질수록 문화접변 스트레스는 낮게 지각되었으며, 문화접변 스트레스가 낮을수록 삶의 만족도는 높았다. 본 연구는 부모-자녀 간 의사소통과 문화접변 스트레스가 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년의 삶의 만족도에 영향을 미치는 직접적, 간접적 경로를 확인하였다. 또한 부모-자녀 간 의사소통과 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년의 문화접변 스트레스 및 삶의 만족도 간의 구조적 관계에서, 현지생활에서의 환경적 요인인 문화접변 스트레스가 삶의 만족도에 미치는 상대적 영향력을 발견할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 나 홀로 조기유학 청소년의 심리·사회적 적응을 위한 중재 방안 모색을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 현재 유학 중인 청소년의 부모와 예비 조기유학 청소년의 부모들을 대상으로 한 부모교육 프로그램 개발 및 제도적 지원에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
