인공와우이식 성인과 건청 성인의 음악 장르별 선호도 및 복잡성 비교

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare music preference and perceived complexity by genre between adults with cochlear implants (CIs) and adults with normal hearing (NH). A total of 31 CI adults and 40 NH adults with the mean age of 23.9 years participated in this study. Twenty musical excerpts in five music genres (i.e., ballad, dance, teuroteu, classical, and Korean traditional music) were used in this study. After listening to each music, participants were asked to rate how much they liked it and how complex the music was perceived, using two 100mm semantic differential scales with two adjectives paired, like to dislike and simple to complex. Information on musical background of participants, including music listening habits and music activity and training experience, were also collected. The results of this study demonstrated that there was no significant difference between groups in terms of the overall ratings on preference and perceived complexity across genres (p <.05). However, there was significant differences in the degree of the rating on each genre (p <.05). With regard to the preference, the NH group showed distinct genre-specific preference but the CI group gave similar ratings for liking to five different genres. One of the interesting findings to note was that preference of the CI group tended to be more influenced by musical attributes. The genres, observed with higher preference ratings and lower complexity ratings, showed few features similar to one another, but rather were characterized with a slower tempo or smaller instrumentation (e.g., solo playing). With regard to musical background, the CI group had fewer experiences of music listening habits, and musical activity and training experiences than the NH group. Meanwhile, musical experiences of the CI group was found to increase after cochlear implantation. These results indicate that the CI and NH groups may show similar trends in music preference depending on music genre, which may be influenced by a shared musical environment during the young adult period. Also, the results with regard to musical attributes of each genre imply that the level of information in music (i.e., temporal variability and a size of instrumentation) may be a contributing factor for genre preference and complexity perception. These findings would enhance the understanding of how adults with CIs perceive music and shape preferences for music in everyday life. It would provide the basic information beneficial for music selection for enjoyment and rehabilitative training for this population.;본 연구의 목적은 인공와우이식 성인과 건청 성인의 음악 장르별 선호도 및 복잡성을 비교하기 위한 것으로, 서울특별시에 소재하는 인공와우이식 전문 병원과 경기도와 충청도에 소재한 대학교 등에서 20-30대 인공와우이식 성인 31명과 건청 성인 40명에게 실시되었다. 본 연구를 위해 다섯 가지 장르(발라드, 댄스, 트로트, 클래식, 국악)의 음악을 각각 4곡씩 선곡하여 총 20곡의 음악을 15초 단위로 편집하여 들려주었고, 해당 음악에 대한 선호도와 복잡성 정도를 의미변별 척도에 표시하도록 하였다. 또한 연구 참여자의 음악적 배경을 알아보기 위해 음악 감상, 음악 활동 및 훈련 경험에 대한 설문 조사도 함께 실시되었다. 인공와우이식 성인과 건청 성인의 음악 장르별 선호도 및 복잡성을 반복측정 분산분석으로 비교한 결과, 집단 내에는 장르에 따라 유의미한 차이가 있었고 집단 간에는 유의미한 차이가 없었다(p<.05). 이는 평균 연령이 유사한 두 집단이 문화적 요인에 의해 비슷한 경향을 보인 것으로 사료된다. t검정을 통한 사후분석 결과, 두 집단의 음악 장르별 선호도 및 복잡성 경향은 유사하지만 그 정도에는 차이가 있었다. 선호도 점수는 발라드, 댄스, 트로트, 클래식 장르에서 유의미한 차이가 있었고, 복잡성 점수는 클래식, 국악 장르에서 유의미한 차이가 있었다(p< .05). 특히 건청 성인은 장르에 따라 선호도 차이가 두드러졌지만, 인공와우이식 성인은 장르보다는 각 음악의 특징에 의해 선호도가 결정되었다. 템포가 느리고 연주 악기 수가 적은 음악에 대한 선호도가 반대의 경우보다 높았다. 또한 인공와우이식 성인은 이식 이후 음악 감상, 음악 활동, 음악 훈련에 대한 참여 가 증가하였지만, 건청 성인보다는 낮았다. 연구 결과를 통해 볼 때, 인공와우이식 성인의 음악 장르별 선호도 및 복잡성은 건청 성인과 유사하지만, 음악 장르보다는 각 음악의 템포, 연주 악기 등의 요소에 더 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 사료된다. 이는 인공와우이식 성인의 음악 감상에 영향을 미치는 요인을 이해하고, 음악 감상 및 음악 재활 시 음악 선택과 사용의 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
