『가웨인 경과 녹색기사』에 나타난 기사도 이상의 모순

Abstract

This thesis discusses the fundamental causes which produce the paradox in the chivalric ideals in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Medieval chivalry has a set of guidelines for the knights to become a valiant warrior, courteous aristocrat, and committed Christian. In actual practice, however, following these guidelines is both difficult and problematic due to an inherent contradiction among the ideals constituting chivalry. Chapter II analyzes the chivalric ideal symbolized by Gawain’s coat of arms, the Pentangle, which is a five-pointed shape with straight lines. The lines of the Pentangle embody three chivalric codes—martial quality, courtesy, and Christianity. These three codes, though essential in establishing the chivalric ideal, inevitably create a contradiction when they are combined into a single ideal, because they each bear distinct and mutually exclusive qualities. Thus, a close examination of the Pentangle can reveal the paradoxical aspects within the chivalric ideal. Chapter III examines Gawain’s tests in the castle of Hautdesert. Throughout his stay in the castle, Gawain’s loyalty and courtesy as a knight go through a trial as he enters into the exchange game with the castle’s owner. His loyalty to a fellow knight is proved when he keeps his promise to exchange the winnings. However, Gawain soon discovers that implementing knightly courtesy is not so simple. The code of courtesy includes not only courteous words and action but also courtly love. Here arises the discordance between what Gawain conforms to (courteous behavior), and what the hostess expects from Gawain (courtly love). Courtly love is ambiguous in that it is a love of courtliness and a love with sexual desire. On the one hand, the knight’s courteous love toward the lady is encouraged as a chivalric deed; on the other hand, it may induce an adulterous relationship between the knight and the lady and cause his disloyalty toward the lord. One chivalric code entails a violation of the other, and in Hautdesert’s castle Gawain discovers how difficult it is to carry out his chivalric ideal. Chapter IV deals with Gawain’s failure to conform to the chivalric ideal of valor and courtesy. When he reaches the Green Chapel, Gawain should demonstrate his valor and courtesy during the Beheading Game with the green knight. However, Gawain is not altogether free from the basic human fear of death as well as the instinctive desire of self-preservation. His desire to survive causes him to infringe the ideal he follows, as he not only shrinks from the first stroke but also shows ungentlemanly anger toward the Green Knight. Through this experience, Gawain realizes his weakness has caused him to fail in keeping the chivalric ideals. As a result, Gawain pledges to keep himself in check through continuous self-reflection and to take the green girdle, the symbol of his weakness, as a reminder of his resolution. In sum, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight reveals the paradox of chivalric ideal which makes it impossible for the knight to keep the three ideals together and emphasizes the importance of self-awareness as well as self-reflection of the knight in overcoming all the contradictions which hinder the performance of chivalric deeds and fulfilling the chivalric ideal. Therefore, the work also urges its knight-readers to be self-critical in their true pursuit of chivalric ideals.;본고는 『가웨인 경과 녹색기사』(Sir Gawain and the Green Knight)가 중세시대 기사계층의 기본적이고 주요한 행동규범인 기사도(chivalry) 이상의 모순에 대해 고찰하는 작품임을 밝히고자 한다. 중세시대 기사계층을 설명하는 핵심적인 단어인 기사도는 당대 전사이자 귀족, 그리고 기독교인이었던 기사들에게 가장 올바른 행동양식을 제시했을 뿐만 아니라 그들의 주요한 사고방식으로 자리 잡았다. 그러나 기사계층은 그들의 삶에서 기사도 준수를 강조했음에도 불구하고 실제로 이를 제대로 이행하지 못했으며, 결국 그들은 당대 도덕적이고 모범적인 사회 지배층이자 수호자이면서 동시에 사회악으로 기능했다. 이러한 역사적 맥락을 바탕으로 본고에서는 『가웨인 경과 녹색기사』가 기사도의 모순이 생성될 수밖에 없는 근본적인 원인을 탐구하고 있음을 제시한다. Ⅱ장에서는 중세시대 기사도를 상징하고 이를 형상화한 가웨인의 문장인 펜탕글(Pentangle)을 통해 기사도가 함의했던 모순들에 대해 다각적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 펜탕글은 가웨인의 자질과 그가 이행해야 할 의무들을 의미하는 다섯 개의 선들로 이루어져 있으며, 이 선들은 곧 기사도를 구성하는 주요한 세 가지 개념들인 기사의 전사성, 예의범절(courtesy), 그리고 기독교적 믿음을 의미한다. 이처럼 기사도의 필수적인 개념들이 하나의 형상으로 맞물려 형성된 펜탕글에 대한 분석을 통해 이것이 상징하는 기사도에서 파생될 수 있는 모순이 무엇인지를 살펴본다. Ⅲ장에서는 가웨인의 시험을 분석하면서 가웨인의 기사도 준수에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 편력의 와중에 오트데제(Hautdesert) 성에 도착한 가웨인은 성주와의 획득물 교환게임(Exchange of Winnings)을 통한 기사의 신의를 이행하고 뛰어난 예의범절을 지닌 기사라는 그의 명성에 부합하는 행동을 하는 인물인가에 대해 평가받는다. 그러나 기사의 예의범절은 기사의 공손하고 예의바른 언행과 더불어 궁정식 사랑(courtly love)을 의미한다. 궁정식 사랑은 연인들 간의 예의바른 태도를 강조하지만 그 이면에는 성애적 사랑이 자리하고 있다. 아울러 궁정식 사랑은 기사의 발전에 필수적인 요소이지만 동시에 기사의 성애적 욕망이 포함된 연인에 대한 사랑을 우선시하기 때문에 기사의 신의는 물론 순결과도 상충된다. 이처럼 이중적 특성을 지닌 궁정식 사랑의 이행이 가웨인에게 요구될 때, 가웨인은 궁정식 사랑을 이행하면서 그의 기사도를 충실히 따르기 어렵다는 점을 발견하게 된다. Ⅳ장에서는 녹색 예배당(Green Chapel)에서 이루어진 가웨인의 또 다른 시험인 목베기 게임(Beheading Game)을 통해 가웨인의 기사도 이행 실패와 그의 깨달음을 살펴보고자 한다. 목베기 게임은 가웨인의 용맹함과 예의범절을 시험하는 기제로 작용한다. 그러나 기사이기에 앞서 인간인 가웨인은 죽음에 대한 두려움과 생명보존에 대한 욕망에 압도되며, 이는 그로 하여금 그의 완벽한 기사도 준수를 저해하는 요소로 작용한다. 결국 가웨인은 그의 기사도를 위반하고 이에 대한 처벌로 녹색기사의 일격을 받는다. 이러한 과정을 통해 가웨인은 자신이 기사도 준수에 실패할 수밖에 없었던 원인을 깨닫게 되고, 진실한 기사로 거듭나기 위해 그의 나약함을 상징하는 녹색거들을 바라보며 자기반성과 자기인식의 과정에 돌입한다. 결론적으로 『가웨인 경과 녹색기사』는 기사도가 함의하는 모순으로 인해 기사도의 실제적 준수는 어려운 일임을 제시한다. 따라서 『가웨인 경과 녹색기사』는 작품의 청자이자 독자들인 기사들에게 기사도가 함의하는 모순을 뛰어넘고 진정한 기사로 거듭나기 위해서 끊임없는 자기반성과 자기인식이 필요함을 역설하는 작품이라고 볼 수 있다.
